The 98 Tcat had 172 hp and 200 cc more than anything else, I ran the 98 Tcat for years, stock class, reduced the pitch on the track, DD clutch kit with Polaris weights and a Polaris red spring, a 25 tooth top sprocket, had a 98 Mach Z an SRX 700, and if it was a stock sled, none of them even came close on an ice track, or ice, or enough room to stretch the legs, half mile I could get just over 120, and there wasn’t a stock 800 that would pull 115, I’m in Maine, and seen thousands of sleds run every weekend, the 98 Tcat was king until, the 4 strokes came along, period, that video you can see the rider on the cat was scared was stuck on an unpacked trail, when the Polaris had the hard pack every time, and it was only about 400’, I’m not partial to any sled, just telling what I saw every weekend back in the late 90s and early 2000s

How do those late 90s Thundercats fare against modern stuff like the Sidewinder? I live in the northeast and grew up riding sleds in the late 90s/early 2000s but (sadly) have been away from the sport for almost 20 years. @@literallyshaking8019that’s why I stopped racing, when the Yamaha 4 strokes came I think they were called RXL? They came without a turbo in 03, and they could barely pull 100 mph in a qtr. then the stage2 turbo came out for them, about a $5-6000 upgrade, got them going about 112, then the stage 3 came out, and that got them closer to 120, that was $10000 upgrade, then nitrous, then this then that, before you knew it these guys, usually self employed general contractors, had $20-$30k invested in these sleds, I had maybe $3000 invested to get just over 120mph, the 98 Tcat would pull 118 all day long out of the crate, I mean for a ribbon or trophy, or at best $400 in winnings I just thought these guys egos got the better of them because the cost they put into these sleds to what they were winning made absolutely no sense to me, and I’m sure most of those guys had short crooked dics too, but that was enough for me, I wasn’t going to put that kind of money into a sled and risk blowing it when I also rode on the trails as well, the new sleds are incredible, Yamaha, Arctic Cat, those 1100 turbos are pulling more then 130 out of the crate from what I hear, technology will beat you every time, but, those old triple triples were awesome, they would just about pull your arms out of your sockets, now I’m an old man riding on a two up Ski-Doo

Lots of good comments and lots of misguided ones as well over the years. I remember the magazine reviews from those days and even back then they warned T-Cat guys to beware of the XCR and before that the Storms. Pull the two out of the crate, assemble and run, a T-Cat was a little faster, but Polaris guys had a bag of tricks to liven them up a bit, and then the XCR/Storm was a little lighter and had an easier angle of attack on the track. It didn't take much to get that little advantage in putting power to the ground, and then it was more up to the rider to use than anything.

The stock '03 800XCR was a badass sled. Last model year, Polaris finally had them setup great from the showroom floor. I had one. It would lift the skis at a 50mph roll. 157-159hp, showroom stock. To be fair-Compare that 800 with the ZRT 800, and there's no comparison. Peak power is close, but the ZRT didn't have variable exhaust. The XCR was superior in every category. Wish I never sold mine. I had a Gel battery in it, with electric start, and reverse. It could be done, because I did it. Two separate ignition switches, one for cranking it over and battery charging, the other was OEM, for basically altering timing, running regular fuel, or a click to the right, and a yellow light came on, requiring premium only. Polaris finally had them just right, then stopped making them. Go figure. They only made about 500 2003 800XCRs, so there aren't many around. Shit, I had my shocks revalved, everything.......Can't believe I sold it. As for running with a T-Cat.....C'mon, man, they're 1,000cc triples. You might beat them to 660', or even 1,000ft. But across the lake, I'd have money on that Cat EVERY TIME......

You KZitem detectives figured me out. I photoshopped the video of my buddy and I racing. Thundercats, like XCRs, have tons of top end and are very hard to beat in long distances. 600-1000ft races like this and you'll often see even F7s beat both of these sleds. A) This video isn't fake and B) It doesn't mean XCRs are faster than TCats. Some are, some aren't, some days one might win and another day the other. But to say it's a fake or that it wasn't really a TCat is just ignorance.

And the xcr doesn't eat an engine every other season and require a rebuild in-between...

The xcr800 with power valves pushed 159hp stock. T-cat 155, so very close. I think setup/weight are a huge factor here.

Don't know where those numbers came from but the stock t-cat 1000 was 172hp out of the box and could up to 180hp with the air box gutted and carbs re-jetted. The zrt 800 was 155hp out of the box, while the 900 t-cat was about 165hp. xcr's were about 155hp out of the box 159-162hp re-jetted.
