I've driven both and own 11 bikes even an xr250r even ktm 450 and 525exc..... ktm takes the cake in power and suspension honda xr400 though is the best imo because it has simply valve adjustments compared to the DRZ's shim system. You really should only compare the xr400 to the drz400e not the s model. but hey work with what ya got. honda also uses the frame as the oil tank that acts like an oil cooler which is cool. parts are cheaper on honda. honda has been building bikes longer Than Suzuki. honda xr line is like a Toyota Tacoma. rant over

Having ridden both I have to say the XR is the clear winner in all regards. Sure the drz is kinda more suited to roads but with correct gearing the XR is still perfectly capable. Main issue I see is people piss on the XR for having a kick start but its literally the easiest bike ever to kick over. Only real thing that annoyed me about the XR was having no battery but at end of the day that just adds to it's durability IMO. Ya just can't break an XR. I would love another XR400 again, but my XR650R is just 10 times the machine the 400 could ever be :)

ha. Don't get me wrong, the 650R is an awesome machine, but I would still love to own another XR400R alongside it. The 650R isn't exactly the most practical bike and the seat is nothing short of brutal on longer rides and to be honest having that much power isn't always as useful as you'd think. But... And it's a BIG but... It's just so damn hilarious. For sheer fun factor I've never ridden anything that's been even close to it. Definitely don't rule it out ;)

I'd go with the one that is air-cooled because less weight, less maintenance, less things to break. And probably the real reason, I'm kind of old school. Think 1972 Honda XL 250 (299 lb) or 1975 Suzuki TS 185 (225 lb). I preferred the Suzuki, it was a 2 stroke. :)

I'm glad you pointed out the weight differences when it comes to street and dirt. One of my biggest complaints about my CRF250L is that it is really heavy when throwing it around in the dirt. However, I have always been thankful for the weight on the road because it provides a pretty nice ride for a dirt bike. I definitely agree with you that dirt is always better :)

I have both bikes xr 400 and drz 400 and have had both s and e model drz's. You bring up some good points but still not a fair comparison. The xr400r and the drz400k would be a fair compare. Both kickstart only with almost the same weight. Other than not being a fan of the Xr stock carb and giving a slight advantage to the Xr suspention the biggest difference other than air vs water cooled..(pick your poison)... is actually the geometry.The honda has a steeper fork position which makes it feel more nimble and roomy and the Dr a more chopper position which feels a bit more cramped but also more stable at high speeds.Dr desert and Xr for the woods is my suggestion.Oh and of course weather you prefer ketchup or mustard color. Both are awesome bikes in my opinion!

Ok here's the truth. I have a DRZ 400 with lots of mods. And yes they do suck stock and they are better on the street. But it's a heavy pig! I'd take the Honda over it anytime. I've owned WR 450's and KTM EXC's 250, 300, SMC 625 and back in the 90's CR 500's , DR 350's one with a 400 kit. And not to leave out one my favorite bikes I've had XR 600 which I wish I still had. For just dirt hands down a KTM but if I wanted to ride on & off road and have reliability you can't beat the Honda! Take my word after riding for 51 years and still wide open. If you're not racing in Pro class you don't need a new bike, you just want one. My favorite bikes are from the late 90's to early 2000's. But still have passion for some bikes from the 70's. You guys are too young and wouldn't understand. P.S. Suzuki has the worst fucking seat I've ever had on a bike. First thing to change if you buy or own one. Seat Concepts buy the kit you'll smile all day.

I’m not saying the pumper carb will make it better than the xr400. However the pumper carb on a Dr350 or Drz400 it is a huge huge improvement, literally makes it a different bike. I currently ride a dr350 with a roughly 400cc big bore. It’s air cooled, lighter than both the xr400 and the drz400. Problem is the Dr350 has a very small aftermarket if any. Dr350 also has a six speed transmission which is very nice. It’s basically a traditional 5 speed with an overdrive almost. Great videos man!!! I am looking for an xr400 next because of the strong aftermarket!

Questions here please: Problem with the XR400 to me is the necessity for such frequent maintenance. This is no problem for some people who ride from their home base, return and do maintenance. The DRZ is heavier but it's also built to head for the horizon and keep on going to Burma if you want. Two serious questions for anyone here who really knows the answer including Hermit. Has anyone added an external oil tank in a safe, good spot to increase the teensie tiny little dry sump oil capacity? Second, what's it like to adjust the valves, how long does it take and is it easy enough to perform on a road trip once you get handy at it? Am I missing anything, because I like the XR400 otherwise and 40 lbs is a lot lighter, would be great to address the main maintenance drawbacks in a smart, bullet proof way. I would like to hear something about this from people who know what they're talking about. Suzukis weigh, but they have those relatively big ole bearings, nice alum castings, plenty of area on wear/pivoting points, fairly generous thread depth that doesn't strip so easily etc. I admit I don't know if the Honda is light because these things that matter are too light duty, or if the Honda is designed with stuff like a smarter frame like high end bicycles have which means better, more expensive tubing processes etc, careful attention to weight but at a $ cost but they are plenty durable. I could sum it all up by asking if the Honda can benefit from some logical mods that increase the maintenance intervals and engine longevity or is it actually just a light, higher performance bike with a sweet engine/ gearbox that is not engineered for long life, that's how it hits its weight target, lots of things about the engine that mean it's built to hustle, but not durability, it will inherently self destruct fairly quickly and that's that, period ? Thanks
@HermitDaVlog
7 жыл бұрын
Don't let me be the final word on XR maintenance, but I don't plan to do any more maintenance on the XR than I did on my DRZ, which is twice a year or every couple thousand miles do an oil change. XRs have as much or more a reputation for being bullet proof than the DRZ plus as engines get older the oil change frequency becomes less important. I put about two quarts of oil in on both bikes when I do an oil change so I don't think there's an oil capacity advantage to the DRZ. Checking and adjusting the valves couldn't be easier on the XR, you just pull the four caps off the top of the head and pop a feeler gauge in. I got a gauge from RMATVMC.com that has a little bend on the end which makes it even easier. From what I've read actually needing to adjust the valves is something I should expect to do after thousands not hundreds of miles or about never. I think much of the wight difference comes from the DRZ being water cooled and having electric start. XR has no water, no radiators, no battery, no starter motor, and probably less of a subframe too. Don't just listen to one idiot on the Internet, but I hope that helps.
@jeanjeudi1111
7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insight. I've heard only good things about XRs over the years and don't really see them as so out of date even in 2017 for what I want to do. Seems when it comes down to it, maintenance is not a showstopper for the XR400 and with some mods I don't see anything that rules it out as a daytime adventure bike. I don't mind performing reasonable necessary maintenance one bit, but don't like an unnecessarily finicky design.That doesn't seem to be the case with the XR400.

Xr400 is about 20 pounds lighter than the DRZ400E its closest comparison. DR-Z has a bit more horsepower at 39hp 38Torque. Suspensions travela and clearance is all about the same.... Both hold ridiculous low amounts of Gas if your planning a longer dual sport or adventure bike ride. DR-Z is still produced and even as popular a Honda's are DR-Z is just more abundant at this point. Owned both and loved them both and Currently still have a 04 DR-Z 400. What hurts the XR400R is the oil changes ... The Manuel calls for every 600 miles most say they change out the 1.8 liters of oil every 1000 miles. Still that is a lot oil changes if you are clocking distances. If you were trying to decide and looking hard at a 400r id say skip over it and get a 600R🤩🤩 thats where i think the XR shines.

Are you comparing bikes that are both from the factory sold as street legal bikes? Because where I live, the insurance company won't insure a bike that has been upgraded from to dual purpose. The dirt bike would likely be lighter in weight without electric start, light assemblies, and oil and/or cooling system. So, weight sure can be a big factor if none of the accessories are needed to keep bike legal.

They are all great machines. Why are people's stuck on speed when riding trails ? It's not about speed ok mabe some areas you can up open them up. And really how much faster is the Honda to the Suzuki ? 2 or 3 seconds. Really to have this mind set just go get a super sport. Because this debate is pointless. I myself have a DRZ 400S 2007. All the mods are done DRZ E ,cams and mabe a pumper carb next just for the pop on take offs. You can keep those high outputs dirt bikes I rather trail then fling my body thru the air, LOL. So for me I go for torque rather then speed these days. But my carb is fine as well. But it's about the character of the bike. Just like we look at people's it can be fast or torquey but of you don't like that bike character you won't like the bike. Just like people if you don't like their character you won't like them. I tell people's look for a bike in the middle. If you get a faster bike someone bike will be faster or slower one someone else will be slower. In the middle, perfect !

I don't think I can really say. I only did one ride on the stock carb and it was as is. I would rebuild and rejet the stock carb and put it on just to see, but that requires swapping the throttle cable too which puts me past feeling it's worth the effort. It feels best to me if the pumper comes on almost as late as possible, which suggests to me it's not just the pumper that makes the difference, but the air volume even without the pumper. The bike seems to run smoother and with less strain, but without doing a lot of riding and swapping back the stock carb I don't know if that's just in my head or if it's reality.

thanks for the great response, once my bike is street legal i will rejet it and if i do not feel it is at its full power i might go ahead and get the pumper carb. i will get back to you with my findings. Thanks again for the response!

@@HermitDaVlog Rode mine for many years with the stock CV carb. I always wanted a pumper carb. In the end I just rode it and lived with it. By the time I got around to learning about the pumper carb I resolved that the XR was plenty fine for my riding style with proper jetting and a return to the stock pipe with the insert mod. I do miss that bike.

+MX BROS Sounds like the pilot jet is too rich which means the whole thing is probably set up too rich. If you've never worked on the carb you might want to get a jet kit like JD and put in the Jets it calls for your elevation and temp.

Hermit DaVlog. Have you ridden a kdx 200?I'm going to look at one this evening
@HermitDaVlog

No, but I really like them and have almost bought one a couple times. The type of riding I do needs a little more range and the ability to roll up to a gas station and refuel, so two strokes aren't the best bike for me, but I want one anyway.

What are the hand guards you have on the xr?

Enduro Engineering Evolution. They're ok, but I'm going to get some Cycra Rebound and compare them. I'm thinking I'm going to like the Cycras more, but we'll see. www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/1036/39364/Enduro-Engineering-Evolution-Debris-Deflectors

Both are good bikes, I prefer my 400 over my brothers klr650 for the sheer weight difference.

Hermit l watched this vid when it first came out and l owned a drz400s...l now own a drz400e and an xr400r. Im still not going to comment because l dont own a drz400....or 400k as some people call them which is the kick only version and is supposedly 5 pounds lighter than the xr. Im just going to sit here and shut the hell up 😂

Everyone shut up! Who cares. They are both lame compared to modern bikes. It's like comparing two diesel hatchbacks. Whichever is better doesn't really matter as there's loads of bikes out there that are light years ahead in terms of weight and power.

DRZ400K is so much better bike. DOHC verses SINGLE CAMSHAFTS RFVC full of top end problems PLUS WATER cooled PLUS kick AND ELECTRIC START. Also made in Japan!!!! NO COMPARISON Unless you're ignorant arrogant and nerrow-minded which lot a Honda xr400 owners are!

I don't have either of these bikes but looking to pickup a new one this year, DRZ wins hands down no debate. I can't buy a new XR400, it's dead. DRZ400 lives on to ride another day! Put that in your pipe and smoke it fanboys.
