In the menu 8 you can select dual display. When dual display is on, and you are in memory the lower display shows the frequency, so that you can label the channel with an actual name. To boot to menu, press the push-to-talk and the button just below it, and turn the radio on. Let go of the buttons, and you will be in menu mode.

I bought mine last November, got my license in December and I love it. Being on fixed income and a new Ham, I've had to be creative, I use it in my truck with an antenna adapter and magnet mount. I built a 2meter 3-Element Yagi and use it as a base with an old Motorola speaker mic. The other day I bought a used i-com 208h that I now use for a 2meter base. I found a cheap hf rig and an als 500m amp, and am mostly happy talking around the country, Canada and South America. I'm using an ocf wire that mostly gives me north and south.

I don't think an $80 radio is ever going to be the most recommended radio to new hams for me. Good video, as usual. This is the first radio I bought after I got my license. Not a radio pro by any stretch of the imagination, and haven't really done much of anything radio wise in almost a year. But - I was able to hit quite a few repeaters around here in Chicago after I started playing with it, and made a handful of contacts. So like you said - it seems to be able to tx/rx really well, especially around here in a dense urban environment. The first contact I made was from my driveway, out to a repeater about 10 miles away, and then north of the repeater about 12 miles.

Wouxun has landed on the same price range now. But I paid 60 USD for my Wouxun KG-UV6 a few years ago. It has filters and is a decent radio. That was a baofeng killer. Now its much more expensive. Using the Dual-Watch mode (VFO A & VFO B). Which can be confirmed with a separate radio (TX). The Light on the TOP of the FT-65R will show a Green light when receiving on the primary VFO & show a BLUE light when receiving on the other VFO. The Dual Watch (A & B) only works in VFO mode. Not MEMORY mode. The FT-4XR does not support dual-watch in VFO mode nor in MEMORY mode. VFO B supports the FM Broadcast Band on both radios. VFO A does not support the FM Broadcast Band..

Made in China does not always equal crappy. It all depends on the company making the product and their quality control. Case in point: Apple which makes some of the highest quality products out there. Having said that, most stuff coming out of China these days is shoddily made garbage.

Honest question in 2023 - is 440 really viable anymore? Only for short range comms maybe? Most of my contacts are on local VHF repeaters, not 440.

I have lots of 440 activity here. There's a 440 repeater on the tallest building on Galveston seawall and you can hear it 30+ miles away

How can you compare it to a Baofeng? It's a quality radio, purposely designed for Amateurs from a company that know what they are doing. Not cheap Chinese yum-cha junk.

Baofeng Killer was the title. Not "vs Baofeng" Also as stated in the video, this model is made in China

Hello. Thank you for the review. I now have an FT65. I have found that while it produces the full 5 Watts on 2 metres, it only manages a maximum of 2.5 Watts (when set to 5 watts) on 70cms. This is either into a dummy load or into a 70cms aerial. The power meter, by the way, shows that other 5 watt radios produce 5 Watts, so it's not meter inaccuracy. Is that normal / typical of the FT65, do you think, or is there anything that could / should be done? Thanks again. 73, Mike.

I don't think that's normal, no. I'd contact the dealer you got it from and inquire

I just bought one of these a few weeks ago from Gigaparts. Radio + S&H came to about $105. (Oh, and 4 weeks of waiting.) It's way better built than my Baofeng radios and is made in Japan. The Baofeng radios are great for what they are, but this one seems a good step up.

KD6TXB Here I think I will try one (FT-65R) I like the comments that you can make it have dual display I like to put WX on top and repeaters on the other display. Plus the charging stand not bad for price.

Used to be it depended on where the last link in the build-chain was. Today, they are all made in Japan, per Yaesu.
