Thanks for the great video. I too repair electronics as a retirement side job (was a PBX Tech professionally for 25 years) and have ran into the "cracked gear" many times with many brands. I noticed you didn't address it but if you ever do (and you will) it can be fix although it a real pita. The symptoms of this cracked gear typically is intermittent skipping from track 7 to track 11 or higher. Many times it will play fine until the higher track numbers. Sony sold these units to their competitors however, they never used them in their own units. The way I fix the cracked gear is to pull it off, clean it then super glue the crack together . You'll need a small clamp to keep the crack closed while glue sets up. While still clamped, use a drill bit just a tad bit bigger than the hole in the gear where the motor shaft goes through and by hand turn the drill bit with your fingers to enlarge the hole. Then put a dab of super glue in the hole of the gear and replace it on the shaft making sure the gear is the correct height. And wala.....the gear is fixed. Many, many CD players have this issue and can be fixed like this. Just make sure to clean out any glue that may have gotten in the teeth of the gear. Also, your belt replacement was cause by excess grease the factory used. You need to clean out the pullys with alcohol before installing the new belt. Thats why it was slipping. Keep up the videos! Thanks from Oregon

Thank you very much for posting this video. Same thing happened to my used Yamaha CDC-635, which I bought recently. The tray won't open - as usual the belt was the culprit. The belt had actually melted away and had stuck to the pulley. That fixed, the next thing was that the CD spindle was not running . What happened was that due to excessive play, the motor shaft had dropped down a bit and the spindle platter was rubbing against the plastic collar. I took out the platter and repositioned it a little bit higher. It worked perfectly. Another problem was that the plastic gear on the laser motor had split and was slipping on the shaft. Finding a new gear in India was next to impossible, so I had to repair it. First I drilled the gear hole with a 2mm drill so that hole dia was exactly same as the motor shaft (otherwise because of a tight fit the pasting will not hold due to stress) . Then I used superglue to fix it on the shaft. It worked. The problem now is that it only reads original audio CDs, not CDR or CDRW which I burned on my PC.

I’ve just fixed a Marantz 100 CD changer that had the “Jammed” message on its display. To make a long story short, the problem was too much grease in the Cam Gear that sinalizes to microprocessor the position of the mechanism. Maybe the grease was interfering the signaling. I cleaned a bit, then reassembled and voila the changer worked again. Good thing that I discovered your channel and valuable tips , thank you.

My father's first answer to anything is to lubricate it, when his television remote stopped working, he sprayed Blaster penetrating oil into the battery compartment, then he yelled at me to fix it and I had to clean it all out. While I was doing that, he grabbed my expensive contact cleaner to clean his neck brace.

Great video again Dave. Just to let you all know, I was not the amateur that greased that CD player! It came in a package wih some other electronics I wanted. Salute to you. I have the same CD player and it plays but with skipping track (rather I would say repeating tracks from a certain point), also doesn't fast fordard when pressing search button. This had made me not use it for long 20 yrs. bought 2 more CD players but was never satisfied with their performance and a major reason to quit music. Today I watched this marvelous video and I ve found my good old friend which still plays but with the same old problem. I'm gonna go to clean the rails tomorrow. Let's see if it fixes mine. Fingers crossed. A bit worried though... Don't know whether I would be able to put back the rails properly or not.

If you had to would it be possible to remove the gears, guides etc. to clean separately; perhaps ultrasonically? Also would that not allow a potential repair to the cracked gear?

No, I just use old hard drive head magnets, as well as the small magnets from CD/DVD pickups for small screwdrivers. Tip for the small magnets is to place them on a sheet of waxed paper, and spray paint them lightly, then when dry flip over and do the other side. That way using a very bright colour paint you can see them when they stick unexpectedly.

Boil a belt? Could you please elaborate?
@12voltvids
Жыл бұрын
Depending on the type of belt, many can be reformed by boiling for 10 - 15 minutes. This softens the rubber and realigns molecules. The elasticity returns. It doesn't work for melted belts. But is they have dried out and become hard and slippery it works in the majority of cases where no replacement is on hand.

And if the customer would be willing to pay for the extra work I would be happy but this is a guy that brings me stuff to get working and puts a limit of say 25 or 30 to get it working so he can sell it on fleabay. So when I am told get it working as cheap as possible that is what I do. I could care less if it breaks again because it isn't going to be my problem. Now if someone brings something in and says knock yourself out recap it spare no expense that is what I do. But those customers I don't see and probably wouldn't want them anyway. I dealt with that type when I worked in the industry. One guy was measuring the spacing of lines on a cross hatch pattern on his tv and whining about the geometry being out by 1/16 of an inch on one side of the screen. 4 hours in the house tweaking it to his satisfaction, push the tv back in the cabinet and the earth's magnetic field is slightly different and the geometry goes out on the other side. Finally walk away not get paid. Don't need those headaches.

That sled drive gear will always crack eventually, as the nylon shrinks. To clean those gears I do not use alcohol, instead use some spray oil on the ear bud, as it will dissolve away the grease. The sled rails I use a synthetic grease, as I have a lifetime supply of it, and a sparing amount per rail works well after the cleaning, plus it does not degrade and is food safe as well.
