I like the single thumper over a twin setup. They’re much easier to work on in my opinion. A lot of these are received at my dad’s shop for just regular maintenance whereas the other brands require more than just an oil change and such. My family and I have an 08’ and 12’. Neither are used to race around but both are used as work horses pulling logs and trailers around since new. These machines have been bulletproof with just proper maintenance and care.

What I notice when driving around ranch and farm country are all the work ATVs with sprayers on the back. I'm somewhat new to ATVs and have a "toy" (Can-Am Outlander) on order. I'm guessing 1/2 or more of ATV sales are tools for work. Which is great for those needing such machines.

Being in the market for a new ATV months back, I looked at several manufacturers, weighed lots of options, and eventually settled on this exact model of grizzly, and I’m glad that I did. I’ve had it for months and I’ve been very very happy with it. I’m amazed at how easy it just goes through anything and everything. Great bang for the buck, especially in my case because I got a pretty good deal. You’re review was pretty spot on and fair. No one ATV is going to hit every checkbox for every user, but this one definitely hits them all for me. There’s more power there than I’ll ever need, and I do put this thing to work sometimes. Awesome machine. No complaints. 99% of The people who buy this thing will be very very happy.

I like the steel racks much better. Easier to strap your stuff to. Handle a beating so much better . You can hook anything to it and don't need to have to buy the snap in for putting stuff on. like your rifle holder it chain saw you can just put it anywhere you want it. That only my opinion.

For my girls we have 2019 Suzuki 400 ASI steel racks and a 2020 450 Outlander steel racks. For me it's a 2019 Outlander 2 up 650 with composite racks. I like that the racks can interchange with the quick links system but some times dont need the can am boxes. It's more difficult to weave your bungie's through due to the head of the bungie's getting caught in the small holes on our machine to get a good tight hold. We are strapping down foldable camping chairs, coolers, shovels, small generator at times. In order to get a good tight strap down you need to go over and under and it's a lot easier with steel racks.

I think the Polaris Sportsmans are way more comfortable. Between the seat comfort, and the handle bars being higher, I would rather ride all day on a Sportsman. The fact that this machine is 570 class power, but is priced like a 1000, means it wouldn't even be on my list. It does look good, but a much better value would be a Polaris or Can Am for either the same price, but lots more power(1000), or same power and half the price (570).

I prefer the metal racks, simply because I overload the racks, way overload. Some of the bumps that I have hit with the racks loaded up would have broken plastic racks. As for the Grizzly though, I got to say I'd love to see an 850, but how about a 2 up Grizzly too, it's a shame that Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha don't offer 2 up. Maybe an 850 with an extended chassis and 2 up. That would be a huge leap in the right direction in my opinion.

I currently own a 2018 Kodiak 700 SE. I purchased it to replace my 2017 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000. I needed something lighter, smaller, quieter and more maneuverable to meet my hunting needs. I would prefer a Grizzly, but I will not buy one until Yamaha comes out with a parallel/v-twin in the 800+ class. My Polaris XP 1000 was over-kill and just way too heavy. So I will stick with my Kodiak 700 SE for hunting duties but my son will get that unit as soon as I can get a Grizzly that has more power. My Kodiak is my first experience with Yamaha. I have had 4 Polaris Sportsman ATVs and I still own an RZR 1000S EPS. As far as preferences, I prefer the metal racks of the Yamaha over the Polaris composite racks but I miss the storage of my Sportsman. I also definitely prefer the 4-wheel drive system of the Yamaha over the AWD of the Polaris. The Ultramatic is also the only way to go.

I've got 128km on my 2020 grizzly 700se xtr. I traded in a 2015 sportsman 1000xp, I do prefer the steal tubing racks over the plastic Polaris rack. My only problem with the grizzly is heat issues over the muffler and in the storage box over the engine. But I fixed it, I made aluminum heat shields, one plate that goes under the storage box, and the other goes over the area that's not covered on the exhaust where the header entered the muffler. Total improvement, and no more hot plastic. I also swapped out the zillas for 30 inch monstermayhams, NO LIFT NEEDED, rides way better in the really rough stuff. ( I never liked maxis tires).

In my opinion the steel racks are good for durability of your gonna be strapping different things to it (tent cooler firewood chainsaw ect...) you can't go wrong. I forget what it's called but the can am system the way all the accessories clip into the racks is better if you want a removable storage container front or back for different length rides you can put a small one on for your phone and wallet for small rides and put a big one on really easily if your gonna go on a really big ride to carry more when needed, or takeout off if your playing around or need to strap something else to it but have the quik release to put it on if your gonna go far.

I have a XT-R .. I can run with 850s and easily keep pace with the 1000s on the gravel and paved roads (I hate road riding tho) .. on the trails they can't even begin to keep up .. they have the big twins but lose to much power in their clumsy drive trains and over weight chassis .. bottom line is most ATVers aren't flat track people and you can't beat this machine for agility and power to weight .. this ATV is a trail shredder, big time .. oh ya .. that 686 is actually the reason I bought it .. quick, torquey, bomb proof and keeps delivering tons of grunt .. throttle responded is exellent and the clutch is silky smooth and aggressive .. it's a sport utility quad that MOST DEFINITELY leans to the sport side .. one last thing .. you'll absolutely love the front diff lock

Love the Grizzly and it has a lot to offer. But unfortunately, it doesn't hold a candle to the Can Am Outlander 650XT. Fit, finish, v-twin power, ride, seat comfort, upgraded standard equipment, etc., etc., etc. I would love to own a Grizzly as a second toy, but at over 11k, and as long as Can Am is in business, I don't know why I would ever buy one over an Outlander...even IF Yamaha ever does an 850 variant, (which it sure doesn't seem as though they're ever going to,) I'd still make the same points. I frankly don't know how anybody who's being objectively honest could really argue that. 🤷♂️ Still LOVE Yamaha and the Grizz is one cool looking quad though! 👍

I have a '19 Kodiak 450, Yamaha's crinkle coat finish on their racks isn't that durable. I moved some metal loading ramps a short distance with my Kodiak's front rack, and it was enough to wear the coating off, down to the bare metal in some places, on the rack. Subjectively, the powder coding on Yamaha's older model racks were more durable than Yamaha's new crinkle coat finish. Plus, with Yamaha's new IRS, there is only a 33lbs. tongue weight capacity, which hinders it's trailer towing/moving capabilities. Lastly, I'd like to see turf mode as a standard feature on the Kodiak/Grizzly ATVs, for people like me who use their ATVs on sensitive terrains. Plus, with a selectable locking rear differential, it would eliminate the need for EPS and would make these ATVs turn a lot better in most cases.

The EPS is decent on the regular edition Grizzly models but with this square tire setup and the much heavier Zilla tires up front, the XTR definitely needs more EPS input. Zillas bite hard on trail and through mud thanks to the aggressive lugs, which can sometimes result in bar whip. Nearly got tossed once or twice. As for the Rincon, we lay awake at night wondering the same thing. Let's see a Rincon 1000 with the new Rubicon bodywork!!

I know this is an older video, but I just bought a 2024 Grizzly XTR. Going to that from an ‘09 Honda Rancher. Quite a step up in performance and damn sure price! Granted I could have bought a Kodiak EPS and it would have done everything I need an ATV for. However, after looking at a Grizzly in a dealership that Grizzly XTR was just calling my name. Count me as one that prefers a steel rack also.

I like the composite racks, offer a bit of a flatter area for hauling and working. With the steel racks I found that things shifted around more and would fall through the bars. I love the look of these new Grizzlys but cant see pulling the trigger on one until they make a 2 cylinder 850/1000. I really hope Yamaha builds it one day because they would sell a ton of them.

I have purchased 3 Grizzly XTRs since last spring (2023). I have had 2 of them on some of the most rocky and technical trails north east Utah has to offer and they go everywhere you are brave enough to take them. A few times I ended up in situations that were dangerous, not a problem though; the Grizzly is light enough to winch out of most any situation. I have winched up and down rock faces that SXS have torn to hell with no issues. The Grizzly is a perfect size and weight for extremely technical trails. Did I mention they are by far the sexiest ATV on the market? I plan on purchasing 2 more ATVs to finish outfitting my family and those two will be Yamaha as well.

Are you running Zillas over that rocky terrain or did you swap out the tires?
@OHVLife

@@dirttraxtv I ran Zillas for some of it. To the credit of the Yamaha 4 wheel drive system I was able to go a lot of places on those mud tires out here. I switched to an 8 ply all terrain and it's even better with those.

@@heavysnow8616 You can't go wrong with any Japanese made ATV as far as reliability goes. I too was considering the King Quad for that reason, but I feel like the aftermarket is better for the Yamaha and I like the look of the Grizzly better. As of this post I own 4 of them and getting ready to pick up the fifth one for my daughter on Friday. They are very capable out here in the Rockies and I'm glad I chose Yamaha.

I personally like the grizzly racks I feel they are more durable. Maybe not as modern as the other styles but can’t go wrong with durability. A Examination explanation of the digital dash would compliment this video IMO. But great job covering the basics!

We don't see too much of Mike Lester in front of the camera. Maybe he's the guy under the helmet test riding most of the machines. Love my Yamaha Kodiak 700. Coming from a Honda I find the Yamaha ATV's are just a little more refined over the Honda's.

I’m not as interested in high horsepower and top speeds as I am in useable torque from the engine. I’m guessing that a 680cc single must put down lots of it. The trend now days is to make multi’s, how does this big single stack up in the useable ways with the multi’s and what about fuel economy? If you said how much weight could be hauled on the racks I missed it. You pointed out the hitch, how good is the vehicle at towing ? I live in Alaska and have a more utilitarian need than most people, so I am more interested.in this vehicles work habits if you will. Running along at high speed may trip the trigger of the young kids, but I’m too old and well beyond such things. I need a worker. When I was young I had fantastic luck and great times on a 1980 XS-11 and my love, the 1984 FJ1100. I once hit 155 mph on the FJ, so I too have had my run with speed. Now I need a worker and am more interested in how this would compare with larger Can-Am’s for work. Or possibly even a Kawasaki Mule, that diesel intrigues me. Obviously I had wonderful luck with Yamahas, how reliable is this vehicle long term?
@dirttraxtv

Had an 05 Grizzly and it towed a fishing boat good enough. These Yamahas are renowned for reliability. However, if you're thinking of a MULE, you'll have yourself a great UTV.

I hate composite racks. You end up having to buy overpriced proprietary accessories, the universal ones that fit on round tubes just don't work. Also composite racks bend when you tie down stuf on them. I see NO advantages, apart from maybe looks. AAA yes, washing! composite racks, mud stick alot more to them and trying to get your hand under there with a cloth, you often end up with cuts and scratches due to molding lines of the composite racks. I own a 2014 can-am Outlander 650 MAX. All my observations are based on my experience with the composite racks on this machine. I really miss my steel tube racks.

I think the Japanese makers stick with a single because of reliability. A Vtwin would be great though. I personally despise steel racks. Everyone says you can strap anywhere but it always slides, makes your gas can go flying and even a waterproof bag rubs the paint off it. I was constantly repainting my KQ racks. Now I have an AC Alterra and a Polaris 850 and the composites are awesome. What would be perfect... An industry standard quick attach system

Just to be clear, the SW is a triple. Loads of power there and I would LOVE that engine tucked under the seat of a Grizzly. That would be wicked. Yamaha has a parallel twin in its Wolverine SXS line-up that we would like to see in the Grizz and in the Viking as well. The 686 should definitely remain in the lineup, but let's see some more juice.

I like the metal racks, I’ve bent mine in several rollovers and you can straighten them up in the shop just fine. Running square on the corners is the way to go, I have 26x11 Tara crosses for the summer and 27x12 big horns for the winter..traction is great on the front end. My biggest complaint about the grizzly is the seat needs to be closer to the handlebars, on technical trails I find myself riding too close to the airbox The renegade and outlander seat is almost 9 inches closer to the handlebars if I recall. I do have to agree with most everyone else the grizzly needs a bigger motor, although with a couple of upgrades and moding the heck out of the clutch it’s pretty dang peppy. Keep up the good work DT.
