I've always found it's much simpler to just hook any THR to a laptop or computer (or tablet for that matter) and use a looper software/app. You can just overlay to new tracks and also tweak them to your heart's desire. In some cases you can bluetooth midi control the looper and you only need a USB connection. Or stick HX stomp or PodGo to its aux in if you really want to use it as its speaker :)

Hi there ! Great review. ! Question is it possible to connect your guitar wireless to some effect pedals and these effect pedals then connect (wireless or by cable) to the yamaha 30II wireless speaker ? Or is it better to add the effect pedals after the speaker ? What would be a good solution ?
@KevinIlsen
3 жыл бұрын
For an amp with a bona fide FX loop, you generally want some pedals between the guitar and the input to the amp (tuner, wah, overdrive, etc.) and other pedals in the loop (modulation, delay, reverb, etc.) so that they are applied after the amp’s gain stage. So it really depends on what kind of pedals you’re talking about. You could certainly use a wireless transmitter + receiver to go from the guitar into a pedal chain; I specifically bought the full G10S system so that I can use the wireless transmitter with my THR30ii as well as with my other amps and pedalboard setups. As far as going wireless from the end of your pedal chain into the Yamaha, you could probably do that, but you wouldn’t gain much advantage. The point of a wireless system (in my opinion) is so that your movement with the guitar is not restricted by the instrument cable. But the pedals don’t move, so once you hook up a cable from the last pedal into the THR, you don’t need the pedal to follow you around the stage, it can just sit there on the floor ;-).

@@KevinIlsen Thanks man. I did a little more research and some people are saying that this method may Damage the Amp? ( I am not that knowledgable ) but I wish that Yamaha would offer some input? What about just going from the 1/4 inch output of the Looper to the 1/8 inch input of the Aux?
@KevinIlsen
2 жыл бұрын
@@michael_caz_nyc I’m not knowledgeable enough to know whether it can damage the amp either. I saw several suggestions online about how to use a looper this way and so I tried it and decided to make the video. Regarding just running a cable from one 1/4 inch output of the looper to the 1/8 inch input of the amp you could certainly do that but then you’d only be getting one channel. Honestly that’s probably fine, though. For example, I often take my THR out to open mics and I run a 1/4” instrument cable from one line out jack on the back of the amp, to the mixing board at the venue. Works great and I can still hear through the amp on stage with me.

I have an old thr c and x model an love it because of it's amp models. But these ones only have headphone outputs. I can modify it so, that the internal speakers won't get muted when plugging in headphones, but I expect your method won't work for me, if the aux signal is also distributed to the headphone output?

Yes and yes. You can run any pedals into the front. Likewise, anything that you'd traditionally put in an FX Loop (using the "4 cable method") could be hooked up the way that I illustrated hooking up the looper. Just be aware, as some have noted in other comments here, that you're going to be using a tiny jack and at least some length of tiny cable, and so you're going to experience some signal loss (vs. using 1/4" cables throughout). So I'd say: do it for practicing at home, but in a performance setting, you might not be 100% happy.

If you want to have true stereo sound you might need two 1/4"-1/4" (mono) cables between the THR and the looper. THR line out Left -> Looper Input A; THR line out Right -> Looper Input B. Using Only one cable results in mono loop tracks (i.e. I the same sound on left and right channels). Is this assumption correct? Thanks
@KevinIlsen

Yes, to retain the true stereo, run a pair of 1/4" mono cables from the L and R outputs of the THR into the L and R inputs of the looper, then use a "Y" adapter to connect a pair of 1/4" mono cables to the L and R outputs of the looper, and combine them into a 1/8" stereo cable to plug into the AUX input of the THR.

Yes, you can use the 4 cable method and effectively stack other effects before (or instead of) the looper. I would imagine that there is signal degradation when using the aux jack, simply because it's a smaller jack -- you won't get the quality that you get with a 1/4" cable.

You’d need to run two 1/4” cables from the left and right line outs into your looper pedal. If your looper pedal is stereo, then take the two outputs from the looper and combine them using a Y cable connector to run into the AUX input. If your looper pedal is mono, you’ll need to use the Y connector to combine the L and R outputs into a single cable into your looper pedal.

Hi Kevin - many thanks for this great video and work around. However I am unfortunately having an issue when copying your setup, and would be grateful if you could give any guidance/advice. I have the THR30ii + Boss RC-5 Looper. When I copy your setup (either with 2 line-outs going into the RC-5, or just one), I get a very twangy / electric sound when I run the loop back into the amp (kind of like a bad "Phaser" effect). I have tried everything I can think of to fix this, including 1. Running the loop pedal into a separate speaker or to headphones to see if it is an issue with the Loop setup. This sounds fine. 2. Testing the THR amp's aux and lineout separately. Both work fine. 3. Running the loop pedal in front of the THR amp (i.e. effects impact both the loop and guitar input). This also works fine. Accordingly, the issue only appears when I go Guitar > THR Input (either via cable or Relay G10)> Line Out (mono or stereo) > RC-5 (mono or stereo input and output) > THR Aux input = Terrible twangy tinny electric phaser sound. Have you or anyone else run in to this problem? I am at a loss what to check next (I even purchased a Audio Ground Loop Isolator Filter Suppressor to see if that would help, but no luck). Cheers Luke
@KevinIlsen
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Luke . . . I think I've got a fix for you! First of all, make absolutely certain that the "Guitar" output knob on the THR30ii is set all the way down to 0. Use the "Audio" knob next to it to control the output volume. In addition, in the THR app on your smartphone, after pairing with the THR30ii, click the icon that looks like a gear (in the upper right corner). In the window that pops up, adjust the "GUITAR/AUDIO" knob so that it is ALL THE WAY DOWN (i.e., set to 0). If that's set above 0, you're going to get a horrible high-pitched squeal.

@@stevephen I saw it mentioned in a forum somewhere so I tried it. Then I figured I’d make a video showing how to hook it up. Note that you can’t do overdubs on your looper when you hook it up this way, because the overdubs will keep getting recorded on top again. And the small gauge cable going into the aux in jack is going to have some loss of fidelity. But for practicing at home and just being able to improvise with effects over a chord progression, it’s quite adequate.

Do you have static / line noise in the loop when you do this? It works great other than that for me.

Make sure to go into the THR app and set the guitar output volume to 0. If you don't do this you'll get a lot of noise. It's not enough to adjust the physical knobs on the THR; you need to do it in the app.
