AJ, I’m absolutely loving this series on your channel of discovering new and one of a kind avocado varieties. I also am happy to know that you’re preserving them by making grafts and I hopefully get to grab some scions from you at a meeting someday ;)

The tree was supposedly planted some 44 years ago, did the owner know where the seed or the seedling tree came from? During that time period, Nabal would have been popular, in addition, based on the characteristics of the fruit and the tree, I think it is very likely a Nabal seedling.

I have been following your series and thanks to your great vids, I have successfully grafted a few Hass and Fuerte variety here in San Diego, Ca. But this giant Guatemala/Indian hybrid looks incredibly fascinating! Please keep us informed on where and how we are able to get a scion of this variety. My latest root stock threw up 3 separate trunks out of one seed, this will hopefully be my 3 variety masterpiece! Thank you for the awesome tips and tricks. Best regards, the other AJ :^)

Its very large , how does it compare with the Choquette variety? I have a small tree (about 9 months in ground) and im advised that the fruit is 1.2-1.4 kilos . Yes very rich and fatty in taste similar to your one. So 2lb = 0.95 kl s

What a great find .. I agree, we need to preserve this and name it. It’s only going to appeal to a certain demographic who has the space to grow it, probably never be a viable commercial variety, but definitely a great find for the large backyard grower

A long time ago when I lived in Pico Rivera we visited some friends who lived in the LA area several miles inland from the coast. They lived in a two story home and there was an avocado tree that was way taller than the house with a very dense canopy.

Nice haircut AJ. Well that was an amazing find. My first thoughts are that it's a child of Nabal but all things need to be considered in trying to work out it's heritage, like you have pointed out.

I gave up on my tree and gave the ax 2 years ago on my 1st Hass avocado I planted back in 2010 here in OC CA and today I have 100 avocados on it. It grew in 1 year what it didnt grow in 12. In 2010 it was a 15 gallon with fruit on it and that was it no more fruit just 2 or 3 a year. I chopped it to about 4 feet because I was planning on removing it another weekend but with in 5 days it grew rapidly some 3 thick shoots, and it just take off. I have a 14 tear old Fuerte same with only 3 avocados a year. Last year I said if I didnt get plenty of avocados in 2024, I will be givin it the ax. So, far I am staring at it and sharpining my ax next to it

With all the different types of avocados you encounter, you could have quite a business selling scions! I'm always up for a graft or two now that my in-ground avocados are doing so well, so I'm definitely interested if you are able to share. Thank you for passing on your knowledge and your great finds! There is an avocado that grows down the main street in my town, probably 15-20 trees, that I also want to get some cuttings of. Not a huge tree, but the fruit is luscious and it almost never browns. I've kept it in the refrigerator for weeks and it eventually got mushy, but not brown. I've even put the unripe fruit in the refrigerator, taken it out weeks later to ripen, and it was still delicious. If I get some cuttings I'll let you know. I think you'd love it.

A few people have commented that it looks like a Nabal seedling. It may well be a Nabal or Nimlioh seedling. Both of those were brought here from Guatemala around 1911 or so and would have been available in 1980. It does show some West Indian characteristics as well. If it were straight, Guatemalan , it would not be ripe until summer or the fall 14-18 months after flowering. If it were straight West Indian, the fruit would only hang on the tree about eight months and also ripen in the fall. The only West Indian fruit available this time of year is a variety produced out of the Dominican Republic called Carla. It too is a Guatemalan/West Indian cross ripening right now. Nobody’s gonna be able to figure out where the male pollen came from. It does however, look like AJ has found a really cool variety that has good potential here in Southern California. It looks like a big beautiful tasty fruit. Great find AJ! You should find a Nursery willing to propagate and market the variety. Well done from the socal avocado community!
