This yoga routine is designed specifically for runners, focusing on increasing mobility in key areas like the hip flexors and thoracic spine. Focusing on these two areas play a key role in improving your running form. No more cringey race photos and best of all, better breathing!
We'll start by using camel pose as a pre-mobility assessment to gauge your current range of motion. This deep backbend uses the hip flexors, quads, and opens up the front of the body.
Next, we'll work through three targeted exercises to improve your running posture:
- Thoracic Extension Over a Foam Roller - this mobilizes the thoracic spine or middle back
- Half-Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch - this works through your hip flexors
- Crab Rocks to Open the Shoulders - this brings it all together through glute activation, hip flexor mobility, thoracic extension, and shoulder flexibility
By increasing mobility in these areas, you'll be able to maintain better running form over longer distances. Proper form translates to more efficient running and less risk of overuse injuries.
After the mobility flow, we'll revisit camel pose to see how your range of motion has improved. You should notice greater ease getting into the full backbend now that your hip flexors and upper back have been opened up.
