Driving, using computers and mobile phones (cell phones) causes our bodies problems and, often as a consequence of modern life, many people suffer from pain in the neck and shoulders. We should all stretch our shoulders for our health and wellbeing. Maintaining flexible shoulders and upper body does more than improving your confidence and appearance. Poor posture due to stiff upper back and shoulders is a major factor in ill health. As the shoulders curve inwards and the upper back becomes more concave, the function of heart, lungs, nervous and digestive system are compromised. This Iyengar yoga class for beginners shows you how to open out the shoulder region, creating space for the spine to extend and giving the vital organs room to move and do their jobs.

which in its classic form, is a great exercise for flexibility of both hips and shoulders. This week we teach the shoulder action in of arms in Gomukasana as well as other poses and shoulder exercises to help free the upper body region. You will just need a yoga belt for this yoga class.
Although it is good to target particular regions in the body like this, yoga teaches us that our body and mind are part of a holistic entity. When we are tense and are experiencing mental stress, our necks and shoulders get tight. When our neck or shoulders are painful, it quite often causes headache and fatigue. Arthritic joints are often linked to depression and many skin conditions have been connected to a lack of diversity in our gut flora. The list of ways that the body and mind interact could go on and on.
