Growing up my sister and I shared a computer, then an iPad when we got a little older, only really having unfettered access to the internet by the time we both got our own smartphones end of middle school/early high school. I use to be this way, i barely used my devices unless i was putting it in the phone holder (it’s suppose to act as a tv) of my barbie doll house. Me and my sister used our devices to record us making slime, watching movies, playing tag, or stuff on vine. She moved out at 16, we are 5 years apart. I was left lonely, and still now. Shes 18 now. I can confirm its more fun when you have someone to play with. I lost my social skills when she left cause I no longer had a good human interaction with someone close in my age group. 😕 So i can confirm constant screentime is brain rotting and is 100% breaking our social skills.😢

It's not just that. I mean you can use an iPad to teach your child how to read or play educational games etc. Like unlimited time with an iPad if you only have access to idk kindle, a crossword game and duolingo is not going to "ruin" a kids development either. Which is what I find so frustrating. If you decide that you want to give your kids an iPad/tablet to have a break or whatever that's fine. But you can literally control what they have access to. if you don't want to limit screen time just limit the apps/internet access. It's really not that difficult :(

Words of advice: Gen Alpha don’t act the way they do because of their birth year, they act like they do because of how their parents raised them. I saw a comment here saying that Gen Alpha is why they won’t become a parent, and frankly that is just absurd. If you raise your children right, they will not be disappointments, and neither will you. The real disappointments are the parents who give these kids screens at age two.

No exactly. A combination of bad parenting and a crumbling education system that values standardized testing over encouraging a love of learning and creative and critical thinking. Blaming the kids is not only insulting, hypocritical, and unproductive, but it’s flat out incorrect.

I was born in early 2010, raised by gen X parents. I get called lazy when I relax for more than a day, and as a child I was highly encouraged to go outside, rain or shine. I love to read and while I have plenty of classmates that are capable and independent when It comes to their studies, there are definitely a few classmates who just lack the motivation and interest to learn new things in school. I pride myself in being decently smart, but I also struggle with spelling, I always have. I am fluent in reading and I'm ready to learn and correct my mistakes. Most of the time, the problem within schools is young students don't have the motivation to grow, learn and adapt to the world outside their screens.
@hugenerd97
Ай бұрын
The issue is absolutely not the students lacking motivation. The issue is that school as an institution gives little incentive to have motivation in the first place and is so focused on teaching standardized testing that creating an environment that actually nurtures their minds is neglected. Arts programs are being cut, recess is being cut, even social studies is being cut in a lot of public school systems. Anything that made school fun or interesting or easier to manage is slowly being picked away at, and even if you haven’t seen it happen where you live, I promise it’s happening. Good, accessible education simply isn’t considered important to enough of our lawmakers. One of the major American political parties actively advocates for cutting funding for the Department of Education. How can all kids possibly be enthusiastic about learning when they live in a society that refuses to value it? Kids don’t come out hating learning. They don’t start life unmotivated to do anything outside of a screen. They are conditioned and raised that way by an education system that discourages critical thinking and creative initiative then criticizes them when they consequently fall behind. You seem very well spoken, intelligent, and I applaud your drive. I’m glad that you have seemed to find a love of learning, but I’m so tired of people blaming the kids instead of the systems that they are raised in. There’s a lot of reasons kids might lack motivation. We just need to be empathetic and attentive enough to understand them.

I’m a gen Zalpha with a millennial mother and a gen X father: here is my viewpoint(s) with my own generation. I have to admit, I do do some gen alpha crap sometimes. Am I planning on growing from that? Absolutely. But in school life, I’m constantly surrounded by people who are tainted by the internet. My male classmates? They say skibidi toilet crap. My female classmates? Tainted by what they *think* is more mature (and maybe is), but is really just brain rot. Even my friend group has their own flaws, eg: dirty jokes, dance trends, questionable songs they sing, etc. Imo, the gen z trends are overemphasised in gen alpha due to their desire of imitating their somewhat “remarkable” role models. My parents aren’t really a problem to me. Not because they let me have an excessive amount of screen time (which they do, but they really don’t intend to and only let me because of work), but because they discipline me well. I can’t really say much since they don’t fully act like millennials though. I don’t have much more to say, so I guess this concludes my point of view.

But there are no other children to play with my theoretical child on the streets even if my child would want to. And children nowadays shame each other for crap like not having the latest iphone. It happened to my niece, when she came home sobbing and absolutely broken. She had 13, not 14, you see. And that's the end of the world in those little devils eyes. I want to have children but I don't know what freaking island I need to move on to have them. Because I, as many other adults, am afraid that my will and determination is not enough to win over society pressure, even if I'll try harder than my own parents 10x. That's it.

At least in my country, kids haven't played in the streets since I was a kid in the 2000s. You can arrange play dates (that isn't new either is it?) with other kids, they can play with kids they meet through extracurricular activities like sports or arts, they can play with your friend's kids if they have them too, or with other kids in your family (their cousins, second cousins, etc). Are these things very different where you live? It sounds just like my childhood and my parents and I had no problem "finding" kids for me to play with I'm honestly asking because now that I described it it sounds like the way it's worked for years, not just for millennial parents

As a 13 year old going 14 in a European country I think it's insane that the younger are getting dumber over in America and other countries because I feel like in school I get overlooked as someone as a good kid and a know it all while I'm just focused and happy to learn because exams are coming up and I don't wanna be in this stereotype of a ipad kid, yes it's okay to do what you want but realistically as children of parents it's our duty to be a child and help and love our parents, it's our duty to be a student and respect our teachers and learn, and maybe if your into a hobby/sport that has classes that's also a duty and your own choice. To be honest through covid in 2020 I felt being stuck to my phone like we all did but I'm not going to be stuck on it forever, we have hopes and dreams and that's not gonna happen in second, a minute, an hour, a day,week,month,year or till to day you die- if you don't put the work, time, and energy. While I'm just trying to be a daughter, a student, and a performer all at once, these other kids I feel are just using their parents money, resources and time just to whatever they want and it goes to no where. The Internet confuses me so much am I more mature than I should be or am I just lazy and ignorant because the Internet only puts out that's going to entertain these stereotypes & life styles into other people, yes it's okay to do skincare literally my mother reinforces me to but don't waste too much resources like money on a million different things on products that will waste, or ipad kids if there's buying games you can definitely do that but get your own money from chores, maybe from gifts. Really the best thing about getting what you want is if you worked to achieve it and that's true in my book. I know social media feels likes it's for teens and I'm not really there yet but I've been already here so I hope you don't mind having a younger audience here too

As a gen z person who recently was in high school this is not only a problem with gen alpha. Ill 100% admit that I ignored some of my teachers and classes, I know it was my fault, not my teachers. But for the entirety of high school I had undiagnosed adhd, and was not always getting the help I needed. But again, partially my fault, I did not reach out when I needed the help. Some of my classmates were... Interesting to say the least. Some were good, most were decent. But the small few? These are 16-18 year olds who regularly made inappropriate jokes, harassed teachers, were on their phones 24/7, and made my classes unbearable if it weren't for my friends. Regularly in class I was the only person who answered questions, I was the only person who raised my hand, it got so bad that my teacher told me to not answer the questions, and let the others respond. But they still didn't, after a few seconds of no one responding or raising their hand she finally called on me. Every single person I graduated with (who weren't annoying) can only feel remorse for our teachers. To any teachers out there, I am very sorry, and wished you guys got paid more.

In addition to the SpEd stuff, their dad and I are teaching them to read BOOKS, tell analog time, and they’ll be working on cursive handwriting practice over the summer. I’m not saying this to pat myself on the back. We constantly tell them that “society expects” certain things of people, and we are not raising them to be “someone else’s problem.” That said, I and many others see the down slide of communication and critical thought thanks to the internet and social media. But they are so inexorably linked to social standing, social acceptance, and social currency, idk if there’s a way to separate it any longer. Side note: I found it amusing that Audible was the sponsor for “Gen Alpha can’t read.” Though I suppose getting them to LISTEN to a book is a start.

A result of bad parental discipline is a result of a failed future. Its not bad parenting you just need to guide them and teach them a thing or two and eventually they'll learn on their own. But first of all dont give a kid a ipad and sit there how horrible is it to have a kid.

I was absolutely dumbfounded when I learned not everyone knew how to read one, I loved playing with those plastic yellow clocks they gave in kindergarten lol

It's crazy because people were saying the same thing about Gen Z not too long ago. We had youtubers making "these kids must be stopped" and concerned about their obsession with their phones and posting everything online. Gen Z and Millennials also had a decline in reading and math skills over the last few years, hence the country created NCLB and ECS as ways to "fix" the problem. The biggest problem now is the impact of the pandemic and post-pandemic economic downturn. It affected alpha's performance in school big time and is taking a toll on families.

As a 12 year old I’ve always wanted to be smart and I have big goals about being a pediatrician, living abroad, going to college, and having a career. I’ve never thought about not going to college or getting a job. I’ve also thought about being an author and I have so ideas that would be interesting. I know how to format an essay ( or that is what my teacher taught me) I know how to read and interpret books. I will not disagree that our generation is cooked. My friend I doesn’t know basic math, and she doesn’t know how to format essays, she need help with everything. and one time when we were in a group she had me write all of her slides. We have word groups and the lowest word group has 2nd grade level words maybe even 1st grade level words. School needs to stop cheating our generation and hold us back if we are not smart enough to move on to the next grade.

It’s honestly annoying that it’s called “gentle” parenting, because there’s nothing “gentle” about it. You’re literally just being a grown adult and taking accountability for properly raising the kids you decided to have. I guess compared to clubbing children with sticks it’s “gentle”?
@singingsamodiva
5 ай бұрын
Came to say the same. A lot of KZitemrs talk about this phenomenon of “permissive parenting” under the name of “gentle parenting”. They are two very different things, the fact that a lot of people take the name and say what they are doing is “gentle parenting” while essentially not parenting doesn’t mean that that is gentle parenting. It would be helpful to change the name to respectful parenting. Boundaries are paramount with any parenting technique, the lack of it is the lack of parenting. Guiding children when the village doesn’t exist is hard, so a lot of people throw in the towel and either give them an iPad, barely parent or react like children to their children and forgo placing boundaries. Because it’s much easier to ignore and react annoyed.
@ellie-oaks
5 ай бұрын
The problem with gentle parenting is that isn’t always simple. Most of the time isn’t easy. And most of people can’t do it correctly. The result is kids being demanding and throwing tantrums all over the place., and don’t forget the violence. This happening with my nephew. He’s only four. But he already act violent and screams when he don’t having his way. I firm and direct no. Can help a lot in the early ages to make sure that this kid understands that in the end of the day the parents have the final say.

I wasn’t sure if people knew what the word vicinity was, so I didn’t point it out.” They’re in HIGH SCHOOL. They should know the word “vicinity”. Even in my English class, people ask what words like “suitor” mean. They only know ONE language and they can barely read it.

It's hard to know exactly which words the average English speaker would know, so I think it's fair for the Spanish teacher to do that. "Suitor" is also a kind of unusual word that isn't used often in everyday conversations that aren't about historical stuff, and it seems like it might mean someone who makes suits, so I could see a high schooler being confused by it. I don't think those 2 incidents are indicative.

You can’t blame a child with no guidance or maturity to know the reasoning for their actions. You just can’t really expect them to act like adults. It’s their adults that act like kids and treat their kids like friends instead of being proper mentors. Millennials are definitely becoming more and more the undisputed worse parents, and as social media obsession and lack of individuality or morality goes on, gen z are gonna be worse. It also needs to be pointed out that college educated adults tend to forget how dense the majority of their elementary school classmates were then they themselves were in what used to be called grade school. Also, when I got out of the navy where I was in the NAVOPS division on a nuclear submarine I taught parochial junior high. The kids were incredibly dense at math in at least one third of the cases. They really couldn’t even pass the entrance exams of the nearby Catholic high schools and thus were forced to abase themselves by transferring to the public schools for high school.

It took me years and thousands of dollars to get a degree in teaching and child psychology and my first month as a teacher made me regret it all. I quit after a year. Society is a mess, the pandemic messed up a lot of kids development and parents did not adjust well. The kids can't concentrate, their brains all desire constant stimulation through a screen, they don't want to learn unless it's fed to them as a fun tidbit of stimulation with loud sounds and bright colors. My year 5 kids were reading at a year 2 grade, the parents didn't work with their kids, and the kids didn't care (which I don't blame them, they've been conditioned into this). The teachers are getting punished by the bosses and the parents, there is a reason so many teachers are leaving. There is zero reward for teaching right now- we aren't helping kids get where they need to be, we aren't paid enough, we are working so many hours unpaid, and the schools do not support us. We can't be therapists, teachers, and parents all on a salary of 35k a year. It is physically and mentally destroying us. Society needs to change.

Did they teach you right from wrong? Teach you accountability and respect? You seem to be missing the point. Many, not all, kids have unlimited screen time as toddlers. To make it worse, the parents are NOT setting expectations, provide no parental controls on the internet, little to no face to face quality time without the iPad, phone, TV, computer, ect. Yes, the internet can be a wonderful educational TOOL to complement what is learned in school. But, there is a problem when middle schoolers can't read, when kindergartners believe they don't have to listen to teachers, ect. Education starts at home, with PARENTS, not electronic babysitters.

He can read but still have to think and do like "thi-thi-thi-nk" (ber-ber-ber-fi-fi-kir) than straight read "think" (berfikir)

I'm 14 but talking with an 11-year old even if there is only a 3-year gap....I'm sorry but it feels like I'm at least 18 and I'm talking to 1-year old kid......

Omg this is so real, everytime i see someone who is 11 online they spell so badly its insane. Edit: To all of you kids in the reply's telling us about YOUR experience, you have nothing to do with this. Nobody is targeting YOU specifically. We are talking about the majority of children. If you want to argue back use statistics and facts instead of your experience.

@@isa_enfadosisita Ok? Nobody said it was ALL kids. We are talking about the majority of kids, but thank you for your irrelevant input.

@@340dokidokiY’all are so rude to kids, for what? My little cousin (12) always was curious and wanted to talk and debate with the adults. They always shut her down and instead gave her the iPad. Now she’s a Sephora kid who acts way older than her age and isn’t curious anymore. She just looks at her iPad all day. Let kids talk without shutting them down

hi! i’m italian, i’m 21, and here in studying at university to became a teacher. I just want to make clear that gentle parenting, like u said, is this new type to became parents. There are actually a lot of studies that says that punishment is not actually a good thing, and in a lot of cases it makes things worse. Corporal punishment is never a good thing and can’t be considered as something educational. Anyway i wanted to share u something that almost every teacher told us, which is to remember that children are people. I know that it sound stupid, but it always helped me. Like is not their fault if they r born after me so i’m gonna respect them. And trust that if u do this they will really became on our side during their education. hope this is interesting for someone🥰

I am not fluent in any other languages, but I have a great, fluent vocabulary in English, thanks Asperger's Syndrome for helping me learn and not end up like those other people that have low literacy even though they make fun of Autism.
