Blimey - thanks Gez! I guess the vids are the benefit of my overthinking…! It’s so useful to be able to distil it down - after I make the vids I can sort of let it go/move on and develop the thoughts without getting too stuck on something…!! I’m glad it’s helpful - it’s mutually beneficial!

I agree. The most stressed, angry ,awkward people socially, have sheltered or skewed lives. A varied life is a calm balanced life 😊

Variation and no extremes I think… like they say ‘moderation’ - which I struggle with..!!

I always remember a lecturer saying "stress is good distress is the harmful one " there will be things that test you and make you get better but too much of a challenge in one go is too much

Another insightful video James. I regularly tell my kids that they really really need to increase their boredom thresholds, even if it means playing on Xbox/iPad until they are bored of it. Life isn’t a continuous merry go round of exciting experiences, it is a few fantastic times, interspersed with some of what you enjoy doing, and lots of things you have to do to make money to survive. Increasing one’s boredom threshold, such that you can be occupied doing nothing, or doing something you don’t particularly enjoy, is my key to contentment. I no longer check social media and compare my life to the fun lives others portray. I’m happy to potter around in my own dull life, doing what others may see as boring, which it largely is. I just wish I had more free time to enjoy it more. Bored and happy with it.

Wicked Hamish! I can’t be creative without the ‘boredom’ to be honest - I mean - genuinely - what’s the difference between boredom and meditation? And - your life isn’t dull - I don’t think it is mate.

Agreed - there’s a rational/irrational aspect to it too isn’t there - what is something to ‘actually’ be stressed by and what is more of a ‘worry’ about something that ‘might’ happen…

You said it you are more than tough enough to use ice baths. You are right as a society we are all soo over stimulated and our kids are are even worse. I like to say if I’m 3/4 the man my grandfather was I’d be surprised and what will it be like for the next generation. Thanks for making this one

Yep… worrying about other people and moaning about ‘this generation’ is like shouting at close though, innit - all we can do is gonna be for ourselves. Ice baths… brrrr - that’s a real stretch for me. Here’s a thing - when I lock the studio up I do t put a coat or shoes on… that’ll do me for now…!!

I find it more and more baffling how "un-resilient" people are. Missed appointments because they don't get a text reminder, asking on fb what time tesco closes... really!? My dad's mental breakdown when I was 11 turned my world upside down. Follow that up with an abusive relationship, and now I would always rather achieve my goals by working hard on my own, than being reliant on someone else. It's not always the easy way, but allows me to push on hardware I want, and "take the car" when I don't.

Yep - that side of things is quite bewildering - some people almost revel in their own ignorance. There’s a level of self entitlement to a lot of it - with our boys we are quite hard on then with responsibility regarding g getting themselves to scouts, football training, matches etc - organising their lifts etc - which, for the most part they’re good at - but if they fail at it, they’re quick to balance some external force or other - so we’re working on ‘ownership’ now… especially when things go wrong…!

Wow. Thanks so much!! Yep - but we can’t blame them for it - our generation had TV and books at our fingertips - our grandparents didn’t… it all goes on - and we all slip into that comfortable pair of slippers at the end of the day… I know I do - but seeking out some discomfort and showing our kids the way forward - going to football training in the rain and cold, having to walk somewhere - carry the shopping home in bags etc - it’s all good… it’s not a hardship it’s building in hardiness - so long as they/we know and can control it - it just means when the going gets tough there’s a bit for familiarity with it and we don’t freak out..! I’m going to make a list of ideas to do with our kids, I think…

@@1stElement my kids never spent 8 hours in the back of a car towing a caravan down to St Ives on a hot day, sat on vinyl seats with a tape player that only had country and western songs 😁. As you say though, probably better than previous generations

With the idea of getting more activity after becoming a teacher, I started walking to the gym every morning, and then I ride my bike to and from work (10km each way). I soon came to the same conclusion about how being uncomfortable really fosters a tougher character. With winter approaching, I could foresee the physical and mental toughness hit another level. Great video and I totally agree and relate.

Hey - good on you! That’s great work! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Cold weather commuting is an art form - I reviewed a couple of winter cycling shoes on the channel if it might help you carry in through the cold months. Even without buying the boots, there are some winter shoe tips on the Shimano shoe video that might help? Keep up the good work!
