I have a group project rn with some classmates with no media literacy. Which is fine. I'm the class nerd, so I usually end up carrying / being put with kids who need help. I'm used to it. But I haven't read the book these kids did (I was supposed to be in another group but got moved), and these kids don't even make half-hearted attempts to fill me in or help. At the beginning of the first day, they made it clear that none of them both read what they were supposed to and remembered anything substantial that would help with the project. I'll try to ask to look at one of their books, but they talk over me about sports and gossip. So I've been researching the book online. The differing information is quite confusing. I'm writing our thing and drawing our poster all on my own, and we're less than halfway done with one class period left to complete it. Sorry for the long rant, I'm just super stressed

Oh ik why I said that! My point was: it's also annoying when they make fun of an obviously neurodivergent character for being weird. He deserved all the hate the other characters gave him" when the whole story is around the other characters learning to accept his differences. Like srsly, have you learned nothing 🙄

@@EggBenis I'll try to compile as much experiences as possible I had with this teacher: He only directs corny and over-the-top comedies with flat plot and characters, then thinks that anything deeper than that is outrageous, an absurd. For example, my colleague makes stories with a couple scenes that are metaphors to the theme of it, while I have a style of story that I already do on my books (quick first act, unexpected revelations/turns, emotional and intense endings and some stuff left unanswered, but with enough clues to let the public's imagination fill the gaps by themselves)... Which let my teacher very... Emotional, saying that we're being "elitists" (he was serious), that we can't just make the public think, that is our job to digest the informations for them; He sabotaged my final paper by giving to the whole class a crappy screenplay to do a pitch bible of it, which I wrote it in four hours, elaborating a better way to tell that story with porn-style dialogues and ridiculously flat story... And when I was presenting, he interrupted me to ask about EVERYTHING, from the scenarios I chose to the reasons why I decided to tell the story the way I was doing, and when I tried to explain, he did what he always does: interrupts me to offend me and demands a new answer. "How are you gonna convey this?" "Well, I'd just focus on the character's expression while a voice-over will let implicit that-" "Your idea is POOR!!! Think of something else!!!" My final paper had 10 pages, but he didn't let me pass from the third, by doing this again and again until I lost the will to go on and gave up. I was forbidden to direct a short movie because he gave privileges to his ten favorites because one borrows cameras for his comedies, other had the same idea as him, another one is the son of a friend of his, or whatever, and so on, and he wouldn't give our diplomas until we work on his favorites' short movies (all of them directed that same crappy screenplay, so no creativity), so I was forced to: Do the make up for a cast from the crew that was ignoring me the whole day except for a couple of my colleagues that noticed that I wasn't well; To make sure that a specific actor was never alone with a teenage assistant of production on the other (she was just scared of him); And to be screamed all day long on another one because I wasn't using the clapper board smoothly, but hitting angrily. Like, I'd be nicer if I was being the director, since it was the specialization I was specifically studying to. Some short movies got making offs, and you could see in all of them that I was angry and on one step to leave the set, just wanting to get my diploma. Even when I took a nap on one of them, I looked mad. Ooh, and all short movies was directed by duos, never by solo directors, to discourage directing style. Aftermath: everyone from that class gave up the film industry even before they could start, while I'm the only one with two screenplays ready (one for my own short movie, other is a pilot for a limited series I'll direct) and looking for a budget to put them in action. I even called a few of my colleagues to be part of the crew, to try to motivate them. Maybe having a director that treats them well can elevate them in the industry.

At 1:00, instead of “Where is he moving to,” I expected him to say “Huh… I’ll have to remember that” followed him typing “pretend you’re injured … to lure your … next victim…” in his iPhone notes followed by “Thanks! My serial killing is getting a bit rusty and I’m always looking for new ways to … y’know … keep my hobby going… by the way, have you heard from your wife lately?”

This was me and my friends last night. We watched ghost stories, which is very ambiguous and open to interpretation. Me and my friend were discussing theories and the other friend was just confused by the ending 😭

As someone who didn't have any media literacy until like my mid 20's due to growing up with extremely controlling parents and then not having any free time while I built a career, I want to say this is the first character I've seen mislabeled. It's not a lack of media literacy, it's missing social literacy. Someone without media literacy can understand lying for example

Maybe reading up on tropes would help? I’m way too into stories so I’m not sure, but I know there is some level of expectation that the viewer will understand the visual shorthand and other story devices the director is using to deliver the story. Maybe you can start from square one there?

Worst experience I ever had with this was when we witnessed a dramatic character death that was the catalyst for the moral of the entire story, and the other person I was with was angry that the writer 'took the cool character away' and that they felt 'scammed'.

Fr though, only way to cure someone of lethal dose of media literacy is to have them enjoy more media. Hope the friend has the patience to explain some 20 more classic movies and that this character doesnt end up just watching avengers becoming a whole man child. The good and the bad timelines respectively
