Wish is indeed interesting to master. Not so easy basically and It might indeed be confusing for the novices. It can express, as it indicates, a wish in its most simple acception: I wish you a merry Christmas. / I wish you a lovely weekend. It has a meaning of hope. You address your wishes. More interestingly, it expresses a REGRET, sth that is impossible, that won't happen or which is very unlikely (Reason why English uses the SIMPLE PAST with it!) to happen:. Like in my all-time favorite song I love to play on guitar 'Wish you were here': 'How I wish, how I wish you were here ...' by Pink Floyd. 🎸 This is with this song that I personally got used to use the SIMPLE PAST with 'wish' without making mistakes anymore ! ;-) Other examples: I wish you could come at the party (but you can't) I wish you could have come. (but you couldn't) I wish she came ( but she can't and won't most probably come) I wish I won the lottery (But I very likely won't and most probably never will ;-) If that is of interest to you, the way to express that in French would be: I wish you were here: je regrette que tu ne sois pas là (que tu ne puisses pas être là) / J'aimerais que tu sois là / J'aurais aimé que tu sois là / je souhaiterais que tu sois là / j'aurais souhaité que tu sois là. Regret, impossibility, impossible wish-hope ... is expressed here. Note the tenses in French: je regrette que tu ne sois pas là present + subjunctive But more generally in French to express wish / regret / improbability / impossibility, the use of conditional + subjunctive J'aimerAIS que tu SOIS là ( literally: I would wish/like (that) you BE (t)here). Merci Katherine 😘🌹❤

Ok, to summarize: Used to + Verb infinitive: to speak about a thing (things) you REGULARLY did in the PAST. You DON'T do it (them) ANYMORE ! Be used to + Verb ING : to speak about a thing you REGULARLY do in the PRESENT TIME ! Let's try a sentence with both forms: I used to eat in retaurants when I worked on the move but not anymore; now, I'm used to cooking my own food at home every evening. Correct? ... For those who are interested and still have problems with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd conditionals, here is a short and easy summary: Note the very important key words in CAPITAL letters (!): 1st conditional : (If+ present simple ... will + infinitive) refers to the present or future; what is said in the condition is POSSIBLE. IF the weather IS beautiful tomorrow, I WILL GO to the park. (Here I believe, I am confident that the weather will be beautiful tomorrow! It is likely, it is possible/likely. It belongs to realness) If I work hard on my conditionals, I will get a good grade. 2nd conditional : (If+ past simple, ...would + infinitive) refers to the present; what is said in the condition is UNREAL or UNLIKELY/IMPROBABLE. If the weather WAS beautiful, I WOULD GO to the park. (Here I observe that the weather is not beautiful outside (the proposition is unreal) and there is few chances it changes! = unlikely) If I studied hard my conditionals, I would get a good grade. 3rd conditional : (if + past perfect, ... would have + past participle) refers to the past; what is said in the condition DID NOT HAPPEN. If the weather HAD BEEN beautiful yesterday, I WOULD HAVE GONE to the park. (here it didn't happen, the weather wasn't beautiful yesterday and I didn't go to the park!) If I had studied my conditionals harder, I would have got a good grade. Hope that helps! :-)

To summarize: Must: internal need or, strict, imperative obligation, official notices, instructions Have to: external need, obligation but less in degree. As obligations 'must' could often be replaced by 'have to' when it often doesn't work the other way round. The negative of these forms are interesting to grasp that nuance: Musn't = interdiction, prohibited or dangerous Don't have to = simply an absence of obligation or need. Should / ought to : Obligation considerably less in degree, most often used for a (moral) duty or to give advice. I can't come to the meeting tomorrow, I have to go to the dentist's. (obligation not as strict as 'must' but I have an appointment and I have to go to it). To be compared with: I have a toothache, I should go to the dentist's (More or less an obligation, it could become one...But here I more give myself an) advice! Now a question Katherine: Are 'should' and 'ought to' (more rare) totally similar or can you see a nuance between the two... Doesn't 'ought to' implies more a moral duty or a moral rightness, a strong advice perhaps or not... I might have read or heard about that but I can't remember really and I am not sure. Thank you! ...

@@englishwithkatharine Hi Hasan! What you said is interesting because in fact, you should say: 'I hope/wish you HAVE an awesome weekend.' Why? ... In fact you are saying: I would like/have liked that you had a lovely weekend ... Ok? But you could say and it would be way better: I wish/hope you HAVE an awesome weekend. Professor Katharine, a great grammar lecture, go without hesitation with grammar lectures in your next videos, you make it excellently and with such a lightness that it is impossible not to understand you, even if English is not my home language. Your video has been in detail analysed by my word by word and thought by thought and I came to the conclusion that even it is not excluded that such a slow student like I can at least a little bit move towards an English speaking person, and I have to rush because next year I turn 60.
