Regarding the storyboard, Masato Mitsuka is the one behind the action with his long take zooms, in and out, manic rotations which are present in Takahashi's cut. He did try to do that in Super, but obviously couldn't because 1. the schedule and 2. the limitations of the weekly TV anime. Him working on this film is quite the opposite to Super, allowing him to have more time to think of scenes in his own sections.

Takahashi is definitely a top tier DB artist. This movie may have the very best drawn base form Saiyans I ever seen. Those models are terrific. I bet he could draw a nice looking Oozaru Ape as well. I wish the other animators prior to his scene had drawn as good as he did. Considering this a DB film; the over all art is below average compared to the original 13 Movies. Takahashi should've been in charge of the character designs and the chief animation supervisor.
@forgottenrelics1197

Definitely agree with Takahashi, although in fairness the prior animators before him were simply sticking to the character sheets, which is a much simpler look. The key animators who handled those scenes, like Takumi Yamamoto are great in their own right :)

Is not top tier, is THE BEST right now, the old ones that could match this level of quality (and actually kinda invented the style) are no longer working on DB and honestly I prefer Takahashi over Naotoshi Shida's style, specially because Shida animates everything so fast and sparkly that it doesnt feel like Dragon Bal anymore. Takashi's punches really feel solid and with nice anticipation without being too fast, the auras, the faces, etc, I could keep going but there is that, I really hope he stays in the staff forever.

@@j04370859 not even close, in dbz you could ALWAYS feel the impact and see every punch almost in slow mo, it was never too fast or flashy that you couldnt appreciate it, it looks like mha or naruto right now. his style kind of fits 3D better than others, since movement in 3D are kind of having some issues, these half-still shots, close ups and small movements of body parts can still somewhat look okay in 3D. movements are a big issue in 3D, but the advantage here is how the scenes will look and which angles he chooses to use.

6:50 that smooth kick reminds me of the reanimated segment of Goku VS Freeza on Namek (Future Trunks Special). There's a part in which Goku had this spinning landing after his kick sends Freeza flying away close to the end of the battle. I believe that's Takahashi as well if I'm not mistaken. But yeah, overall, this entire movie was a goddamn spectacle. I think I even noticed one of the My Hero Academia animators later on during the Gogeta scenes.

This is a great analysis of the scene, thank you for your hard work! Attention to detail and pacing really makes this scene, and it also shows who Vegeta and Broly are as fighters. To be fully honest, I do believe the og DBZ Broly movie also shows great personality in some of the animation of their lengthy fight. I really wish there was more gravitas in some of those elements, with more build up and the -reason- why behind the fights. Fights are cool and all, but it's what brings everyone to the fight that's important (Tenshinhan's vs Goku in the two tournaments for instance..)

When I first watched this years ago, and I remember not enjoying it at all. It had been a while since I watched Dragon Ball, and this movie was a visual spectacle, without a doubt. The thing is that I wasn't really liking the action at all. it was very fast, snappy, and really dynamic. But it was pretty hard for me to follow because of it. It was just too much imo. Gogeta's debut was great and the immersion was back again but then they overdid it with so many frames during his fight. it was just too much for me to follow. That's what I thought, and wow it's crazy how my opinion has changed since then. I've rewatched it twice at this point and I love it. Having recently rewatched Z and Super, I appreciate the variety in action they storyboarded in Broly. "holy fuck DB has never looked this consistently fresh" is what I thought! it was simply amazing! The way they mix kicks, punches, throws, and everything Shonen WITHOUT a sequence of repeated frames is AMAZING. I adored the new take on Broly as well, and the revision of the Saiyan transformations. They have sooooo much more weight now, it's like I felt the passion from the team behind this movie. They know Dragon Ball. This movie was everything that made the battle Shonen amazing. I personally am still not a big fan of Shida's cuts, they're unnecessarily smooth to pack a punch in my opinion. But I truly respect the work he's done for the series. It's undeniably well animated and fits within the show's standard.

That's such a refreshing take man, it's so rare to see someone attaching the word "passion" to animators in this era. Honestly, it can get disheartening sometimes when people talk as if the newer animators on Dragon Ball (even with returning veterans), have somehow less passion or put in less effort than on Dragon Ball Z. It's so far from the truth and most unfortunate considering how much they do! And when looking back it's crazy myself to think of how my taste has changed since I first watched that movie, I've learned a lot since then :)

I think when you are used to watching this sort of action you know what to anticipate to a degree, when you are being re-introduced to something with such quick information relaying, and the ability to only watch it once, and when you mis something, it takes away from the experience. On rewatch, you knew what to expect to a degree, and it allowed you to pay attention to specifics that you might have missed the first time, making your over all second watch much more fulfilling and enjoyable. This happens in alot of aspects of life. It is good to be patient with yourself, and really tune into the experience you are about to have.

a very nice review of a scene i love, but sadly it exposes what db super has been missing. the fight has the buu arc artstyle with added modern cinematic spectacle, and it has the sense of environment, which i always thought was the heart of why most anime fights didnt invest me like dbz does. although the colours and backgrounds look duller now, that isnt exactly it. they took away the dramatic blows from back in the day, specifically the moments where someone is struck and the impact of the attack really digs into their body and they have shocked/distorted expressions on their faces in response. satisfying, and also pretty comedic. goku vs butta on namek was a big example, butta's expression when he got hurt became kind of a meme. its something that has been around since db, and legendary fights like goku vs cell, and piccolo vs no.17 would lose so much if they didnt have these
