That Buick V6 actually is a good Jeep motor. Easy to rebuild or upgrade, bear in mind that there are two versions of Buick V6, the old ones are odd-fire while the newer ones are even-fire. The odd-fire was 225CI then later upgraded to 231CI. Simpler to stick with the odd-fire. For the old Jeep find a Novak trans adapter and install a Ford 2.0 or 2.3 (think Pinto). It fits perfectly, mates to the T90 trans, and even uses the original radiator hoses. The SOHC engines don't care about the Jeeps low gear ratios. Twice the power and no extra weight.

@@bigunone I put a 225 in a 142 Volvo then replaced it later with a zero-mile 231, both were odd fire. It was very reliable and my daily driver for years. The motor was just a little too wide & too tall for the Volvo & I could never stop it from rattling, here, there, or somewhere else.

That Jeep ain't rusted out and the pans are an easy fix so a frame-off complete scatter and overhaul makes PERFECT SENSE. There are tons of driveline options but what's there is fine in real life. The three day idea is bound to have issues vs. getting your buddy to do the same thing with you in your nice nearly empty shop). If you really want to speedrun the build it would be wise to buy everything in advance so there will be no waiting , and don't forget replacing the electrical system because that mistake bites even veteran wrenches in the butt.

Love the Jeeps!! I have a '73 CJ5 that's mostly stock... But I have NO idea how many miles on it. Those are great fun, and you're thinkin the right way (IMO) to replace the Suburban with a Jeep for towing. That old one is rough around the edges but you'll shine it up! The newer one is a beauty!! Total survivor!

The Buick 231 was an outstanding engine for the Cj5. I had one with a warn/saturn overdrive. If you are not familiar its a bolt on gearbox that allows you to split every gear like a big truck, I believe a .25 OD. If you can find one of those units for a decent price you will not be disappointed.

If you've heard of him, you'll know what I mean. If not, he's well worth looking out. He's a really nice fellow, and is really good to converse with. I've learnt a lot from watching his videos, and I don't even have a Jeep! He's also red hot on Studebaker Weasels (tracked light carrier). Well worth watching......

The Dauntless v6 is basically the same as the odd-fire Buick v6 before they turned it into the even-fire 3.8 v6 that evolved and survived into the 2000s. But it’s technically not a Buick at the time that Jeep was built, it’s a Jeep engine. GM, in their usual corporate stupidity (eg. selling or discontinuing their better engines and keeping the lowest common denominator Chevy junk) sold design and production rights to the odd-fire v6 to Kaiser/Jeep about the same time they sold the design and production rights for the related Buick aluminum 215 v8 to Rover. By the mid 70s, Jeep and the Dauntless had been sold to AMC, but AMC had their own excellent in-line sixes which they used instead, so it was out of production and the tooling stored. Along comes the oil embargo, the gas crunch, gas lines… and GM has their pants down with plenty of big block v8s (seriously: three unrelated 455s, a 472, a 500, and a 454!) but nothing economical. So they bought the Dauntless design and tooling back and here we are. Supposedly GM wanted the 215 back also (wouldn’t THAT have been cool as the basis for the 80s Grand National?), but Leyland/Rover told them to go pound sand, and they kept it in use until the early 2000s in Land Rovers and Range Rovers. IMO You should keep it… it’s not a powerhouse and it’s not smooth, but it’s dead nuts reliable, cool, completely useful for trail crawling and campground grocery runs, a conversation piece, and proof that once upon a time GM (at least the Buick division) designed really solid machines.
