Thank you so much for posting this. I was trying to achieve this effect but my mesh kept looking really choppy even when I used a high subdivision and very detailed alpha. Youve helped me a lot with this method. Very clean!!!

You can make a polypaint from the mask and then convert the polypaint to a texture map. Then take the texture map into Photoshop or some such editor, make your edits and then re-import the texture
