I liked this, I had thought about using the small in ears for music because they are noise cancelling but I would have never thought of the ear muffs to block out further sound pressure levels. This is actually really clever dude. 😂

Simple tip but great tip, ear muffs and in ear headphones has to be the best way, as the voice recording is more important than the listening back the track your singing to,so Thanks for the great tip...

kiran phalke I also find it easy to and prefer to sequence record my songs on my KORG PA3x then record each instrument as audio into my S1 v3 Pro, add few more tracks and maybe a live guitar and then my vocals. Contact me if you want to know how to multitrack record each instrument in sync from your Yamaha to Studio One.

Hahah, Nice! I've done this. I can attest to its effectiveness, particularly with an insistent click track. The drawback of course is that earbuds lack the fidelity of full-sized headphones unless you've got $250 in-ears...at which point you can also afford a quality set of studio cans. Tricky in that much isolation to get truly good vocals. But I still nest buds inside earmuffs for tracking acoustic guitar :-) Thanks for sharing!

SO are you confirming my impression (without having tested it) that singing with closed headphones kind of interfers with ones natural good way of singing? I was considering the Beyerdynamic Custom Studio or the BD DT880 pro (the latter due to its semiopenness). But I was fearing the bleed although I use some ROde m1 dynamic mic which does not pick up much from the surroundings: I actually can not even hear any noise on my Vocal track when recording while listening to the music in the loudspeakers. SO I thought the dt880 might be appropriate. Then again the consultant from Beyerdynamics said they would bleed and that closed are better. You see my dilemma??? I asked for an escalation since some years ago when considering headphones I read that semi open would be better for singing due to one hearing the room sound as opposed to the boxy sound.

Nice video. I had also concluded that "why not use in ears" some years ago and used the in ears some times for recording: However I still prefer to sing into the room with no headphones on: Whether earbuds or over the ear ones. It was no coinscidense that I found this video. I was searching for: "Are in ears good for recording vocals" and voila. Recently my in earbuds broke. I was reconsidering some over the ear headphones but I again doubt I will need them because of the dilemma: CLosed ones are good for recording, BUT closed are bad for hearing your singing (which is more natural in open air) VERSUS Semi open Headphones, but then they leak/bleed. SO I thought that logically the in ears would bleed much less. I think there are good noise free in ears around for much less money than those expensive on ear. In that way one can both record with no bleed (if those have a flat=normal/unimproved/unenhanced spectrum) AS WELL as mix and master OR simply enjoy listening. Perhaps two different pairs of in ears would help see things from different sides, with different shapes of the sound image (typically a smiling curve or v curve I think, in most listening ear phones). My other suggestion to save You singers from the dilemma with headphones: TO record a noise track, reverse the phase, then add this to the sound track, thus cancelling the noise out. THe requirement is that you never touch any buttons, including the volume between recording the noise track and the actual tracks where you sing while listening to backing music in the loudspeakers. This way you can sing in what ever room and in whatever position you prefer. YOu simply cancel out the noise pertaining to each physical setup scenario. And yes I subscribed because I like your inspirational engineering spirit: The practical ideas. Keep it up musical friend ;-) SO are you confirming my impression (without having tested it) that singing with closed headphones kind of interfers with ones natural good way of singing? Thanks for your comments. If the backing track is the same as what's going to be mixed the vocal into, then just record with open via speakers with minimal bleed, it will sound just as good and you can get better vocal performance. Unless the noise you are trying to cancel is constant, i.e. hum or hiss, the phase inversion method does not work, to remove room or even air-con noise. Thanks for subscribing.

Ok txs. So it seems I was doing fine recording my voice while listening to the sound track, if I understand you correctly. The last thing you say I am not sure if I understand: Do you mean that reversing the phase only works for removing the constant noise Or removing the bleed from the headphones by recording a track with me stading at the mic while listening to the sound track in the head phones, BUT not singing? Then singing later while hearing the soundtrack. Then reversing the bleed track and adding it to the recording mix. Yes I also read or heard somewhere that if one doesn't later change the sound track, then one will not hear any bleed really. I don't know if its appropriate to advertice. I am not hired, but today I got some MEE M6 PRO in ear phones. They are specifically for musicians on stage. They impress me as compared to my Bang and Olufsen which cost 4 times more. Well the B&O are great but low volume and I really hear my voice clearly with these plus they are nice for listening too: Realistic thus not altering the original sound. I will keep the broken B&o i3 which I will fix when my tools arrive in a few days. They are not really in ear as the on stage ones, since they are the traditional (perhaps called on ear, not over the ear) but without being plugged into the ear. These are rather similar, both with a brace over the ear to keep them in place. Also the B&o are not exactly meant for critical listening. I called them but could not really get any specific answer. So I rely on my intuition.

@@Dyonysus777 I did experiment once with phase reversing by first recording a track while listening to the song and not singing, while standing at the same spot, but was not 100% successful. But might try it again and see if I get a better result.

When I listen to the music in headphones while recording a vocal, my words sound a bit slurred. That's my problem. I'm going to have to practice using something like this, because the music bleed is a major problem. I can hear things in my vocals that aren't supposed to be there, especially in parts of the song that get quiet or the drums aren't present.

Only thing about this is if you have a proffesional recording studio, with multiple clients, im not sure that people would want to put something in their ear that just came out of somebody elses. Cool trick if you are just recording yourself though✌

Good idea but you don't have to spend a lot for a decent pair of closed back headphones. CAD for one. Less than $30.00. I like the earbud idea but I think adding the hearing protectors may be too much isolation.

Lots of times, microphone bleed is not an issue unless it is a minimal acoustic song.
