im a student in highschool, and i can't do some of these, but will do all that i can to help save our earth. im also an artist so if i find plastic, i might make sculptures out of them. hopefully they dont stink. (smell wise ;) ) me and my friend are gonna tell our school principal to let us share the zero waste life and the easy steps we can do to help save earth with everyone else at school in the assembly. wish us luck.

This is why it boggles my mind when the average person claims "it won't make a difference"! When It makes kg after kg of difference.... It only takes one plastic bag to kill a turtle.

Metal straws are a great idea. They can help reduce tooth decay and ours even came with a little cleaning brush. Keep reminding us of the zero waste idea as it's something that needs to be etched into the brain of every "civilised" human.

I haven't read the comments so maybe someone else has pointed this out. Here in the states cookies, especially Christmas cookies sometimes come in round tins which I reuse. Some products are sold in jars which fit mason jar lids. So I look for products that are sold in reusable containers. I am surprised I haven't seen in these zero waste videos mention of the good old stainless steal thermos [ vacuum bottle].

My favorite coconut oil jars can be easily reused and have gold lids that fit on mason jars. I'm planning on buying a couple gallons of apple juice to keep the glass jugs for laundry detergent and a growler to bring to a local brewery. I also made cloth bags out of an old pillowcase, because the muslin ones get so wrinkly. Next time I go to the thrift store I'll look for a nice cookie tin!

I already have my 'zero waste' kit with pretty much the same items you have. One thing I do differently is having a plastic Tupperware box instead of metal because it is better to put in the microwave when I need to heat up the food again if I need to warm it up. Good video! Thank you for the helpful tips.

Love the concept of banding together to achieve a real reduction in SUP. I would add a spoon (or 3?) to your kit That and perhaps a togo beverage container that is insulated (in US there are kleen kantenes, which are a bit pricey new but can sometimes be found used, or just a thermos). Keep it up, good going!

The plastic iced coffee drinks can be recycled where I live, as well as the lids to the hot coffee cups. I live in the US but over time plastic in and of its self is not a sustainable resource. And many are not going to go home to recycle their cups. Although most coffee places have a recycling bin. If you do happen to forget to bring your cup I would say to others to try to recycle it. Find out if your town recycles that number on the bottom of the cup. My area recycles 1-7 with the exception of 7 other and 4 but 4 can be recycled at grocery store drop offs. While it is best to not even use these if you happen to do so try to recycle if you can, because recycling is WAY better than not knowing and thinking it is trash when it would be recycled and not going straight to the landfill!

Love the idea of using a jar as a coffee cup! I made the mistake of assuming my reusable coffee cup was leak proof the first time I used it, and it made a mess of my bag! Later I found out that there aren't any water tight coffee cups, so the screw top jar is a good answer to this :) my question is - is it a bit awkward presenting your glass jar at a cafe when you order a coffee/ tea? Do they look at you funny? Do you just ignore it?

I carry with me a small tin that contained coffee from Starbucks which I use for boiled sweets or nuts if I buy a bag when out and eat a few rather than have them falling out of the bag. Plastic containers are OK if they is reusable and not made of PVC or styrofoam.

British people produce that much waste?! I feel that in my country people don't buy that amount of starbucks! I bought like one of those cups this year, we don't throw away plastic food containers like those (we keep them and store food in them) xD we don't really use that many straws either, nor plastic forks/knives ._____. this isn't even behaving consciously, I believe, just naturally. These are wonderful ideas though, such beautiful objects :') and the tissue part was indeed very relatable x

Not so much input on what to put in the bag, but a suggestion on how to lighten your load. I carry one set of bamboo cutlery with me a d just make sure to dip into a restroom to handwash my dirties beford they go back into my bag. Every restroom has soap and water, and by executing the hand wash between uses I can carry just one set.

+Hayley J Hiya! So for food, you can shop in bulk stores. Take some cotton drawstring bags with you, and weigh the foods out into those, then you pay by weight. That way you save a lot of money, as its generally cheaper, and you are not paying for packaging! Fruit and vegetables, I buy at green grocers/farmers markets etc., Bread - farmers markets or make it yourself! Hope this helps :) xx

Seriously though, my bag already contains normal essential items and is bulky enough without carting that lot around. I stretch to a coffee mug but there's no room. Bags for life are so much more compact. And who eats out that much that they need 3 sets of cutlery all the time? Maybe it's just because I'm a coeliac and can't just get takeaway so carry sandwiches if I know I'll need lunch, but if it's that much of an issue, surely it's more compact to just take butties and leave anything unnecessary?
@Karamoonsage

NobodyOfTheTardis I think you can take the examples that Ellie The Earthling has provided and adapt them to what works best for you. For example, I carry a pair of titanium chopsticks around with me in my little backpack/purse and a quart size Ball Jar with water in it that I carry in a sling (www.amazon.com/NEOSLING-Adjustable-Neoprene-Bottle-Holder/dp/B004VAARMG/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1479537948&sr=1-2&keywords=neosling). When I am done eating, I rinse my chopsticks in hot water at the table or wash them in the bathroom. I'm sure that a spork would work just fine if chopsticks aren't your thing. www.amazon.com/Tapirus-Spork-Steel-Classic-Set/dp/B01GP7W2ES/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1479538102&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=spork&psc=1 All in all, rather than pointing out what you don't like, simply mention some things that would work for you. You never know who you might be able to help in the process. :-)
