"Chasing the Fish" is a beautiful folk tale.
Once upon a time in the Song Dynasty, Zhang Zhen of Yingtian Prefecture and Prime Minister Jin of Kaifeng Prefecture were classmates and had arranged a marriage between their children even before they were born. However, Zhang Zhen died young, and Prime Minister Jin, seeking to annul the engagement, neglected Zhang Sheng, Zhang Zhen's son, and confined him to study in a humble hut by Bi Bo Pond.
A carp spirit who had cultivated for a thousand years fell in love with Zhang Sheng. Disguising herself as Jin Mudan, the Prime Minister's daughter, she kept him company. When Prime Minister Jin discovered the deception, he reported it to the authorities in Kaifeng Prefecture. In desperation, the carp spirit enlisted the help of fish and shrimp to impersonate Judge Bao Qingtian. The real Judge Bao, moved by their love, was reluctant to separate them.
Prime Minister Jin then sought the assistance of Taoist Master Zhang to capture the spirit. The Bodhisattva Guanyin, moved by compassion for the carp spirit, offered her the chance to ascend to immortality in the South Sea. However, the carp spirit, cherishing her love for Zhang Sheng, chose to pluck off her fish scales and transform into a mortal, so she could live a long and happy life with him.
