And Ceres Fauna is a nature avatar who's animalsona is a kirin, a mythical life spirit that's a fusion of unicorn and dragon (both mythical creatures with the closest equivalent being a bit of art showing someone once trying to pass off a giraffe as one). Those aren't just tree branches but she can have whatever form she so chooses within her own whole lore thing. Mumei is the only member of her generation that has a proper normal animal and it's more implied as an owl unlike the others that are directly shown.

3:48 Ceres Fauna (the bottom left one) is, at least according to Hololive official material, a Kirin. Not the Japanese name for giraffe, the mythical creature Kirin. Now the mythical kirin is supposed to have a head of a dragon, body of a deer(or horse), and have scales. So kirin probably have horns instead of antlers. As for Fauna, well she just have two twigs stuck to her head.

As a fellow deer fanatic, I have a few notes, but this was a great video! Antler growth is largely controlled by hormones, so female deer *of any species* that have a hormone imbalance can grow antlers, its just rare. Bugle is named after the instrument (pronounced bew-gull) and while Cervus canadensis (wapiti/elk) bugle, Im not sure Cervus nippon (Sika deer) do, although they do make a good screaming sound! Cervus elaphus (red deer) however cannot bugle and do a deep roar sound. I'd have to look onto the other members of the cervus family to see if they bugle, thank you for giving me something to look into!
@OutofPlaceZoologist
6 күн бұрын
Didn't know about the bugle instrument before. Sika deer do make a similar courtship call like C. canadensis. I thought that should also be called "bugle" If i remember correctly, C. hanglu and C. albirostris do a similar roar like C. elaphus. The way i remember Cervus calls is with "stags roar while bucks buggle"

Gegegege is actually a reference to GeGeGe no Kitarō aka Kitarō of the Graveyard. A supernatural anime about spirits and what they do in their free time. A couple things about antler growth that I have noticed working in taxidermy - farmed/ranched elk and deer typically will have MUCH bigger antlers than wild ones because they have free access to highly nutritious food provided by the ranchers, especially calcium. This seems to let atypical antlers develop more often too, I guess that the extra calcium has to go somewhere and ends up being stored in extra points/tines. Also the texture of farmed elk antlers is usually much rougher than wild ones. Wild elk will rub their antlers on trees (both to remove velvet and to mark territory), which wears down protrusions as well as collecting sticky sap/resin and dirt that fills in the crevices along the antlers, which makes the antlers a much darker color too. Farm elk usually have very light colored antlers because they are not picking up as much dirt and tree bark. Squirrels chewing on antlers is a big problem where I live (northwest USA) if they are kept outside... exposure to the weather makes antlers a more soft, chalky texture over time and it's easier for rodents to take bites out of them. I have a set of caribou antlers that I left in the backyard for a while that now have visible bite marks out of them. :P Also, love your videos! You are doing a great job of subjects I've always been interested in but never bothered to really write about. :)

Great singing voice! I was wondering why you picked a shika deer as your avatar but i see now. Since you are local and like deers, have deers in Nara ever tried to eat your homework or money? When I visited Nara, the deer were well-mannered until I got senbei. However, the deer in Miyajima were more daring and tried to eat a classmates homework. I didn't see the arguements online, but it reminds me of a different fact I heard. Maybe you can help clarify. Male and female reindeers grow antlers as you said, but I heard that males usually shed theirs before Christmas. A lot of movies show Santa's sleigh with antlered deer, does that mean they are all female? 🤔 I learned quite a bit about deer, thank you! I also didn't know that senbei crackers helped conservation in Nara. You mentioned that deer shouldn't prefer them as food, though it is ok to feed them the crackers, right? I worry a bit because in recent years more experts have talked about not feeding pigeons or ducks with bread, since it's too rich for them. This might not be as big of a problem in Japan, but Germany has a lot of bread. Also thank you for mentioning Mercari, I didn't know about it! I was considering Amazon Japan as a way to order books in Japanese I want to have, now I will try Mercari first. 😊

This mascot is actually not a sika deer. My friend drew this and i'm pretty sure he didn't use a specific deer for reference. I'm not a local but i'll answer the question anyway. I've luckily never had any experience where an animal ate my non-edible stuffs. That is correct, male reindeer usually shed their antlers early December. Can't really comment about Santa's reindeer because i always view that as fiction. It's already "magical" anyway so no reason for those reindeer to not be a male. Shika senbei is okay as in it's not that harmful. The problem with feeding animals bread is those animals that are usually fed with breads need more nutrients than what bread can provide. Some nutrients in breads are almost useless to them because they don't have the mechanism to effectively digest those (I'm oversimplifying this explanation btw). Deer can digest rice bran naturally so shika senbei is fine to eat. Still, too much shika senbei is also bad for their gut microbiome.

5:48 The Ka at the end isn't the question particle, it's 科 which is the suffix for taxonomical family. The Shika pun still works either way though. 17:36 The Uma Shika part here is a multi-layered pun. Bashame is saying tasty (umai/うまい) but shortened to uma which sounds like the word for horse (uma/馬), Shikanoko joins in by saying the word for deer (shika/鹿), combined they make the word for idiot (baka/馬鹿) since it's the kanji for horse+deer in that order.
