I'm 63, so about a half century into electronics, I'm simply amazed at the level of technology in the test gear. What young people don't understand is that the specs of today's entry level equipment were simply UNOBTANIUM at any price some fifty years ago. Same thing for amateur radio gear. All the Best! 73 DE W8LV BILL

Spot on Bill, I still have my Radio Shack analog multimeter from the early 1970's, sadly no longer functioning, kept only for nostalgic reasons! 73 de G1YQY

It is quite incredible what is available. And add to that things like this you tube medium.

What's crazy is that, with the given specifications that you can easily get with higher performance microcontroller (you can get $5 - 20 microcontroller with a superscalar in-order ARM Cortex M7 processor now) and decent FPGA far cheaper than the original oscilloscopes 30 - 60 years ago that used to pretty much cost a few grands, even up to 20 MHz bandwidth or faster - in essence, advancement of chip technology basically make oscilloscopes cheaper to make over time even with expensive oscilloscopes getting far better specifications, like 10 GHz or faster bandwidth. Technology is just wild, as it keeps advancing rapidly.

I am 37 and definitely digital child:) However, I love analog equipment and have quite many of them... including old oscilloscope 10HMz produced in small factory in Poland. I have very nice multimieter which you probably know Simpson 260 series 6 :) and many more :) I love every age in electronics from all over the world. I need to say that I love to repair vintage equipment but for daily work I use something like Brymen, Fluke or price-efficient Chinese tools ;) I will never stop using old equipment untill it works from time to time :) IT is rally interesting for people to see such things.

I fully agree with you back then in the old days I started out in 1970 and I am now 69 years old having an oscilloscope would mean a very high price to pay but now this Chinese scope is cheaper and quite useful for just normal repair and would not break the bank but still, if you want the good stuff you have to pay more today but you have a choice to get the cheap ones or the good kind back then there is no choice

Thank you for such didactic explanation ! I am missing four features on the 703: 1) A BNC output for the fctn gen 2) The thermometer 3) CAT rating for the BNC inputs 4) The second osciloscope probe

It's worth noting that many online sellers give the option to buy the unit with TWO probes for only a couple of dollars more. Look around if that is what you want.

Not bad at all, really. For the money, I'd say it is a great buy. For the average hobbyist, it is probably all you really need to get started.

I paid $60 with one extra probe from Chinese taobao site. You can't beat its price. Years ago, a 50Mhz probe cost more than $100!

Good video and interesting real-use scenarios. Any reason you did not use a simple two resistor voltage divider to drop down the sine wave voltage (I think I saw the min p2p from the sig. gen function is 1v, which is lot going into that first stage). Also was the noise on the signals really due to not two using proper probes. Would have been nice to see the traces with two decent probes. But good stuff Bill.

Just before I purchase one. What is the battery life and can you run it from a dc power supply?

Not sure on battery life, but does run whilst attached to a USB charger

I'd keep it isolated during tests... USBs can do wierd things and might provide a short that would destroy things.

@@w8lvradio I agree. I personally would prefer to use battery-powered oscilloscope for tricky circuits especially which cannot be grounded safely such as bridge rectifier after the mains cord.

If you decide to modify the meter, and have a few 21700 cells and holders, you could potentially make it so it lasts much longer on a charge - they're usually rated up to 5 Amps hour which actually should be plenty. Of course with lower temperature version of Lithium-ion cells, you get a bit less capacity. I am thinking about popping in Molicel INR18650-P28A for better cold weather survivability so I can actually use it, especially the DMM portion, to check the truck battery voltage, or something like that.

Looks like a step down from my Hantek 2D72. Can it interface via USB with a PC?

Agreed, the 2D72 is more capable, and costs a bit more too of course. USB allows data transfer but not real time scope data.
