An all-encompassing, open-ended project to constructively and practically bridge the gaps between hard fact, half-fiction and pure fantasy.
Its main objective is to identify some local “loop-based” courses that closely resemble some of those shorter available within Zwift’s ever expanding virtual domain.
In an ideal reality….your route(s) should be;
1. No further than 10 miles (16 kilometres) from your own front, back or bike shed door!
2. Below 20 kilometres in length - this is a personal decision since, given the above guideline and my locality, anything greater would be “unrealistic!”
3. Have a “free-flowing” continuity, principally by avoiding any as many junctions and traffic lights as feasible.
4. Be proportionally as close as possible to their Zwift counterparts in terms of distance, elevation and topography.
5. Be SAFE!
Regarding this specific attempt to synchronise partial pretence with pure reality, environmentally, they are a polar opposites, with Zwift’s semi-fictious creation being set against the definitively urban backdrop of New York, whilst Lucifer’ spectacular excavation languishes amidst the lavish pastoral vistas of Mid Sussex.
Topographically however, they could almost be twins, separated at their artistic and organic origins, with distance and elevation discrepancies respectively amounting to 0.2 kilometres and 3 meters. A closer analysis reveals that the proportions and positions of individual climbs are also remarkably similar, though I admit to specifying an atypical starting point in order to visually align both course profiles, and commencing each lap from the route’s summit outside the Golf Club, which itself could serve as crucial substance station, would be significantly more practical!
The circuit is considerably safer when ridden anti-clockwise since this avoids any hazardous right turns across the path of oncoming traffic, along with one potentially lethal blind junction situated at the base of a 15% incline! The segment has one existing Strava duplicate beginning at the aforementioned location and entitled, “Dyke Loop Mrk 2”, around which I sent my best time roughly two years ago on a slighter steed and in marginally more favourable conditions.
