For normal street driving any 10w30 is acceptable, i would change conventional 10w30 a little sooner than synthetic but both work well. For track use only i would consider using MT50 or straight 50 weight manual transmission oil depending on the temperature that the transmission is exposed to after laps (temp gun checking the transmission housing after laps) and what temperature it is outside. (Is it winter? is it summer?) In the winter 10w30 is what i would use or maybe 10w40 depending on how hard your pushing the car. MT50 should only be used during hot track use and the transmission should be warmed up prior to any hard driving. In extreme cases i have seen people use synthetic 80-90w gear oil on extremely hot (think 110* outside temps) and extremely aggressive circle track cars that will see sustained high temperatures. Nothing driven on the street should use anything other than 10w30 for maximum longevity of the transmission bearings.

So I just rebuilt my trans on my 89 crx si. It’s a cable trans and everything looks good I’m able to bench shift it but then when I put it in the car it’s like it’s stuck in gear. In neutral it will start to pull off when I release the clutch. And it’s very hard to get it into in gear position. Any help would be great. I didn’t lose any shims and from why I tmemeber mine doesn’t have any detent balls that would’ve shot out anywhere. It’s a 89 si cable trans on a d16a6

Looks like a deathtrap. Pulling the handle by the big pulley is nuts. Why, why put a vfd and this pulley kit when you could just buy a real vintage drill press that can punch 1" holes all day long? For the money you blew on all this you could be into a nice 15" or bigger machine with slow enough speeds to drill no problem. Too much money not enough sense. Hope you don't lose a finger to that contraption.

If you put your jack shaft where your motor is now and the motor where your jack shaft is now, you'll be able to keep the original belt tensioning scheme, and you'll have more available torque at the quill.

I have an issue... Kind of an SOS. Ive rebuilt a couple of these with good luck so far, but I'm stuck on one. At exactly 16:42 when you say "slide it down" you are sliding down the 1-2 shift shaft sleeve to engage 1st gear. I have a brand new synchrotech shift shaft sleeve and carbon synchro set. All gears work fine, but the 1-2 shift sleeve on the countershaft absolutely will not engage either 1st or 2nd. I tried the old one, same thing. Even tried a couple old synchros. Friction dampers lined up, all gears and synchros facing correct direction, synchro "rings" are on... Everything appears correct as always but now all of the sudden regaurdless of the combination of old vs. New parts I cannot get this thing to shift into either 1st or 2nd. For the record, I even assmebled the trans out of hope that with it put together and with some leverage it would be able to shift, but no 1 or 2 still. :/ any advise id be more than gratefull.

Hey friend, sorry your having a hard go at this trans rebuild. I have seen in the past synchro locking "rings" get bent out of shape every so slightly causing what your describing. Try and remove the small rings from the synchros (or remove the brass synchros all together for a test) and try and engage 1st gear. If it engages fully then you know its something in the synchro assembly.

Sometimes they are a real bear to get to close, just make sure all of your shafts are properly seated and all bearings are in fully. It should just drop right on
@ivanbasso3027
Жыл бұрын
The idler pulley offset crank is pointing to close to the jack shaft which would require an extremely tight tension from the jackshaft pulley to the idler pulley. If the jackshaft was where the motor is mounted and the idler pulley crank was close to 90 degrees to it then you can tension the belts properly and even use the original belt for the spindle pulley.

@Cervan
Жыл бұрын
Usually just heating the case lightly with a heat gun, or hair dryer and lightly tapping it on the outside will let it fall out, if it’s really stuck the best way is to weld a bead on the inside of the race it wil fall out without trouble after that

@@MoneyManJake be careful when your heating the case, there is a plastic oil guide under that bearing race that can melt, also when banging on the outside of the case be sure to use a rubber or deadblow mallet, using a metal hammer could break the case as they are very brittle. Good luck out there

Swap locations with the jack shaft and the motor. That way you can pull enough tension on those belts to keep them from slipping. Pulling to the side doesn’t give you enough leverage.

Ok... so ive been fighting this trans for almost a month... its d16y... a 2000 honda civic lx.. i think the trans i have is the modle right after the one youve rebuild here, just different forks and one etra detent bolt. so ive broken two snap ring bearings at the top of the counter shaft, and the trans wont go back togther is it possible ive damaged the actual snap clip and thats why it wont slot together, it make pinging sounds want i put it together (assuming thats the bearings breaking) or and i just doing this all wrong ive watched many videos and read many diagrams im at a loss here. If you do respond its would be so much help. Yes if taken out the snap ring clip and put it back, i think the torsion i placed on it may have bent it outta whack or something and thats why its tight?
@Cervan
Жыл бұрын
Your breaking snap ring bearings or snap rings? generally you should not need to expand the snap rings to put the cases back together. Like i showed in the video you just put it together and then let the weight of the bearing push into and lock in the snap ring.

I only tore down the counter shaft and made sure it the gears where together right. I tripple checked the diff bearing and all, ive watched your video about 10 times and the other two videos on KZitem about this transmission about 50 times i just dont understand what ive done wrong. And its tough doin this while havin no home and it being my only car. I just.. im at a loss man. Ive ordered a new clip ring and bearing but the nut that torques the bearing on the shaft the spot where you ping it down is no longer a dent but folded down nd split cuz ive had to take the bearing on an off so many times, that wont cuase problems will it? Have you thought of using that belt dressing spray to keep it from slipping?
@Cervan
Жыл бұрын
I did consider using that non-slip spray, however i opted against it simply because the issue is the pulleys unloading due to the belts stretching, and i think if they would have gripped any more they probably would have either broken or damaged something else.

Would the conversion you bought, work better if it was offered with a set of cogged pullies and cogged belts?
@Cervan
Жыл бұрын
Yes that would be a substantial upgrade, however there are two reasons that (still to this day) i have not changed over to cogged belts is two fold: 1. The harbor freight drill press takes a special tapered top pulley, and i would have to get this custom made or weld a toothed pulley on top of the original. 2. i moved from the harbor freight drill press to an old school press with 1/2 belts since this video, very quickly the main issue actually became the rigidity of the mounting plate as putting too much load (belted or not) would cause the jackshaft to deflect and unload the belt.

At 125$ an hr depending on where you live and what shop to go to prices may vary. I would expect about 2-300$ for removal and installation of the trans, 3-400$ parts depending if they are oem or aftermarket and another 2-3hrs for rebuild. Somewhere in the 800-1000 range complete

I wonder if a electrical pedometer would slow the RPMs down. I use a electric pedometer to dim my LED lights. They are available commercially everywhere now. It has settings from 0 to 10 one being the lowest setting with the least amount of light. Tim been the highest and allowing for the most light to be distributed. My thoughts are can you use a electrical pedometer to do the same?
@Cervan
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately there is no way to to use a potentiometer to slow down the RPM's that i know of unless you are tying it into a VFD as the rpm reference source. This would still require a VFD for speed control. You might be able to convert this to a DC drive and use a pwm controller however.
