I like how this and the English/Welsh longbow are of a similar design, the single wood self bow is quite universal actually. The helmet slightly reminds me of a Viking nasal helmet what with the nose guard too

You might br interested in the work of Eduard Alofs, who thinks that initially the Arabs were horse archers. But in the Abbasid era they became lancers, with only Persians and Turks being known for horse archery. On another point, at 10:20 you mention the Ayyubid being before turkification. But the Turks first started influencing the islamic military in 830s, when Mutasim started using Ghulams. The Fatimids also used some turks too, especially after the Seljuks and Turkoman invasion of the 1040s. The Ayyubids themselves were heavily turkicized, especially militarily, and had recently been under the Zengid Turks of Mosul.

@@Wakobear. I think the arabs were essentially always OK at horse archery, but as they expanded into the central asian front, they needed better military archery culture. Agreed on them becoming generally lancers although a lancer would be proficient in archery as well, it being a pillar of furussiyah after all. I totally agree on that, there are so many things id like to go back and change on this video as i read more and more into sources, the reality is by the 11th century the muslim would would have been very turkicized. I think an update video is warranted on that regard. As well as my bad analysis of artwork of the ayyubid artwork.

@@almubarizunarchery4607 well, ther is a lot of disagreement about them being horse archers. I've only been able to find Eduard Alofs supporting this idea Most historians take Al Tabari approach who said that the Arabs used the horses to ride into battle but then they dismounted and fought as infantry. Until the stirrup became widespread in the mid 700s then the Arabs became lancers. The horse archery of the Turks seems to have been very surprising and exception, as figures like alJahiz mention. Even Eduard Alofs believes that after the mid Umayyad period they probably stopped being horse archers.
@almubarizunarchery4607

@@Wakobear. Thats particularly what i ment about them being OK, they probably did some form of more primitive horse archery with them shooting as essentially mobile stationary horse archers. As the turks and persians came in they brought with them a higher level of horse archery like shooting in a full gallop and 3 dimensional shooting. If you are interested i have reels on my instagram that i recently made talking about this.

@@almubarizunarchery4607 I consder your way to be easier to me in order to shape the limbs narrowed down without kasan. Difficult with rough thick core. Mishkat al-Masabih 3891 ‘Ali told that God’s Messenger had in his hand an Arab bow, and on seeing a man with a Persian bow in his hand he said, “What is this? Throw it away. Keep* to this and such like, and to spears with shafts, for God will help you to support the religion with them and establish you in the land.” * This verb is in the plural, indicating that, after the man is told to throw away the bow he is carrying, a general command is given to the people. Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Spot on sir, I think you have got it about right. This could also be transferred to Europe, as art works show, the re-curve bows also used there. Laminated bows, performance is way beyond the self bow's, but too hot or too wet, just destroys them. Also given the time to build one and not having the industry at home, they will definitely be in the realm of the wealthy not the soldier.
