Hi Rusty. I'm a SF sailor. Question: Why use inputs as tides @ Point Reyes for the currents @ GGB? How can I corollate the high tide/low tide, slack with the 'cycle count' in the sim? For instance, I want to see the current at place X at 2 hours after max flood.

Velocities near the model boundary are often "contaminated" by the presence of the boundary, so in my experience it's best to keep the boundary away from the area of interest. Most of the SF hydrodynamic models have a boundary somewhere between Potato Patch Shoal and Point Reyes, and adjust the observed tides at Crissy Field or Point Reyes accordingly. "Cycle count" here refers to the output interval of 1 minute. Each frame is 20 steps. (reported Time is in decimal days, but a bit obscured due to the color scheme). So you could scrub through and find the cycle count for max flood, then find the frame with a cycle count 120 greater than that. There is diurnal inequality and spring/neap to think about, too, so you may want to be very specific about which max flood you choose. Hope that helps!

A "time elapsed" meter would be very helpful.

Agreed, posting when high and low tides occur.

I have been looking for a model of SF bay tidal currents exactly like this, thanks!

Thank you for posting. Do you have access to a color-coded chart legend so we may see the range of current speeds?

What model used in creating this simulation?

SUNTANS - it's an unstructured, 3D hydrodynamic model out of Stanford's Environmental Fluid Mechanics Lab. Open source, too!

So cool

This is great! Could you please add a little more detail to your description for non-hydroengineers and perhaps links to data and/or models?

Hopefully it's a bit more complete now. Thanks for the comment!

Great movie! It looks really interesting. What hydrodynamic model are you using for this animation? What input data? Thanks a lot!

Thanks! This run used SUNTANS (github.com/ofringer/suntans). The primary inputs are observed tides at Point Reyes, and several dozen freshwater inflows from rivers. A basic wind field was extrapolated from about 6 met stations around the Bay. Visualization is using VisIt.
