Absolutely fell in love with this game, i got it a week ago and already got like 40 hours on it, trial by fire really works to learn it. My first game i lost almost immediately, the next 4-5 i got blindsided by everything that can blindside a ruler (that i know of at least 😂) but now on the attempts 3-6 were all the same dynesty by name in the same location (starting at desmond to creat ireland) which helped carry over what i learned from attempt to attempt.

I request an addendum considering the people-fish in The Sword in the Stone. Merlin wears (ostensibly) the same pair of glasses as a man (are wizards human?), fish, squirrel, mouse, walrus, crab, rabbit, goat, caterpillar(??), and turtle.

The Sword in the Stone would have made a great case-study for people-fish! Though, presumably there would be similar in-world mechanics as Hjelp! Jeg er en fisk! and The Incredible Mr. Limpet, so I think we'd have to draw the same conclusion anyway. Thanks for the comment!

CK3 is in many ways a genepool simulator to me, and even though it isn't very realistic it does make for fun gameplay... pretty sure your ideas would make for a great mod if people want more realism...

Is it possible to program a model of the real-life genetics into a game?
@Lars-Porsenna
Жыл бұрын
I guess part of the problem is biological systems are very complex, often convoluted and always messy, so trying to model every little thing would be tricky and realistically, probably a waste of time and a worse game experience. Not to mention, there's heaps of stuff we don't yet understand that well. I have no game dev knowledge, so I don't know how easy this would be, but conceptually, simulating genomic inheritance, where you confine the parameters to a set of traits you want to model doesn't seem that hard. You could calculate the likelihood of a trait appearing based on pre-defined components of a simulated genome, then add some error as a proxy for a whole bunch of caveats. However, you'd still need to model environmental factors and that immediately makes it enormously more complex.

I think of the active inactive traits as more...there's hundreds of genes going into any given phenotype, functioning not only simple mendelian genetics. So if you have two character who are hale, what's actually happening is one has a particularly good metabolism and increased lung capacity, while the other has strong bones and builds muscle a little quicker. And when they reproduce each offpring gets an assortment of the traits their parents get, some as simple dominant/recessive, some codominance, etc. So you end up with some who've gotten enough good genes that they can be considered strong, or even herculean, while others just got a few of those genes which lead to them being socially considered equally fit as their parents, despite being a different genotype than both.
@Lars-Porsenna
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, in quite a few ways I agree that that's a much better way of thinking about it, but that sort of reasonable thinking is what this channel is dedicated to opposing! Secretly, between you and me, I did actually think about this. There are a few incompatible aspects of the game's genetics and my thinking was that the problem with this one is that the added complexity means consistent inheritance rates for all characters and traits doesn't work, so I needed to choose which route I wanted to go down. Even if I just handwaved that away with the same "population genetics calculation for allele frequency" thing I said, I'd need to assume a much larger genome, probably human sized. I liked the idea of "accidentally" stumbling upon the human germline mutation rate from the 12.7% chance of new traits appearing, so I needed to intentionally shrink the genome size by saying each trait or tier was a single gene and nothing else was important. I know, scientific malpractice! Thanks for the comment :)

From what I can tell, at 14:25 your test is H0: p=0.15 (no additive inheritance), Ha: p=0.3 (additive inheritance). So, the Neyman-Pearson lemma gives a most powerful test where we reject the null when c >= Likelihood(0.15 | p) / Likelihood(0.3 | p), >= f_0/f_1, >= 0.15^x * 0.85^(n-x) / (0.3^x * 0.7^(n-x)), >= 0.15^36 * 0.85^(129-36) / (0.3^36 * 0.7^(129-36)), >= 0.00101102647014. s.t. c is the critical value. So, I can assure you that your conclusion to reject the null hypothesis was correct (unless I made a mistake somewhere). Liked the vid btw! ;D
@Lars-Porsenna
2 жыл бұрын
Thankfully someone, unlike me, who actually knows what they're talking about! Thanks for taking the time to write out the maths, I'm glad my terrible stats aren't undermining the conclusion haha! Using my method, (and why I have all those notes around it!) rather than directly testing if the inheritance is additive by comparing the two possible inheritance rates, I'm setting up two null hypotheses for p=0.15 and p=0.3, and that by accepting the p=0.15 and rejecting the p=0.3, that that's an appropriate comparison between the groups! Certainly not a correct way of testing my actual question, but I think it gives the "correct" answer because if you squint *really* hard at it, it boils down to a very weak (and arbitrary) version of a likelihood-ratio test :D I'm glad you enjoyed it, even if that stats are pretty shoddy!
