A show in this genre that I absolutely adore, although it is on the more unrealistic end, is Dr. STONE. It centres around a scientist stuck in a post apocalypse who uses his knowledge to not only survive but go way beyond that. It's very satisfying to watch because, even if it's unrealistic just how far he gets, each individual step he takes is something that could be done in the real world.

Saw that first Ken Currie painting in a museum in Aberdeen, Scotland. It was the first painting in the room I was immediately drawn to. I don't know what it was, but there was something about it that had me just wanting to stare. At the same time, I didn't want to be near it, and I absolutely did not want to be in the room alone with it. It's a really weird medium between incredible/fascinating and digging. It feels like the subject is alive, and is fully concious of your presence. Really interesting painting. It's honestly one of the paintings that's stuck with me most out of the many that I've seen in different museums all over the world.

Disagreed on how you describe the works of the first artist, putting an animal/person into your art makes it not liminal though the few only featuring the endless cloth definitely are. Also yes, reddit elitists are cringe but so is calling everything liminal when it's just mildly creepy and that's the only trait it has in common with it.

@@anitaremenarova6662 ooh pushed a button. Nah man I’m not offended. Idk why you popping a vein over this lmao. You just don’t have the social awareness to know that you look like what you’re making fun of. Like Jesus man chill out no one cares Also PLEASE do not get me started on liminality. Like I’m not saying you’re one of these people, but people don’t realize that liminality is not an art thing, it’s an anthropological thing. You can take entire courses on liminal thought in college. (Also idk why you pointed out the animals. I didn’t say the animals specifically were liminal. So idk why you pointed that out). But yeah liminal space has existed wayyyyy longer than the Reddit definition. Cause the Reddit definition pretty much says “has to be a space of transition, therefore an empty playground is not a liminal space.” It scratches the surface of liminal ideas and art is. I say all this because this is something I cut while making this video. But look up the name Arnold van Gennep if you want to learn more. This rabbit hole goes way deeper than “that can’t be liminal cause it doesn’t fit the subreddit’s rules”

Django (1966) is my favourite example of this, it's about a gunslinger who plans to get rid off a massive gang of bandits, he does have 1 very dumb moment towards the end but other than that it is the most satisfying example of competency porn in my opinion.

I might just be weird as shit, my autism is a factor, or my religious views are just strange (its likely that one), but I don't get the terror in the comments about Ken currie. Existential dread, when coming across what might be the real life equivalents to this art (I'm likely schizophrenic but who cares), I don't feel anything. I have seen eyes and teeth, circling around my head, as I give them something (idk, I call it feeding. They take like energy or whatever, its a favor between friends), and the empty gazes of the art just doesn't evoke emotion. How can anything convey the instinctual horror of an ever shifting being? A creature you know is there, that you can see, but you also can't see it. And, when I have taught my body to ignore the dread, to stay still and entertain the presence of the things I like to think of as friends, how can you be scared of a painting?

Maybe it's because of my Autism that gives me a poor sense of danger, maybe it's the fact that I grew up on memes and learned how to make anything into a joke, or maybe it's the fact that I've seen enough horror both real and fictional, but I can't say that any of these disturbed me. They actually facinated me and inspire me to seek out similar content. Also I can't unsee this dude dabbing at 11:22

I am so excited for Project Hail Mary. The book was written by the same Andy Wier who wrote The Martian (and the screenplay was written by Drew Goddard who adapted The Martian AND its being directed by Lord and Miller), and it's also competency porn but on a whole other level because the main character doesnt even get to talk to people back on earth this time.

(This is Frog and Toad related I promise). Being queer (as in not cishet) doesn’t make you less masculine or less toxically masculine and vice versa, but I do think there’s a connection. Queer and gay/gay spectrum aren’t quite the same. Queerness works as an umbrella term because of its core meaning of strangeness or atypicality. If traditional masculinity is painful because it is rigid and requires constant assertion and policing, queerness is associated with “healthy masculine” because it represents a version of gender expression and relationship to sex and romance which is not compliant with default expectations and aligns with a person’s natural inclinations instead. To find a comfortable, authentic, loving version of manhood, you might have to deconstruct your original version of manhood as an externally imposed construct and take a step towards the nebulous, intuitional and unorthodox. I think that’s why the most intimate friendships I’ve experienced and witnessed were between and with queers. What makes Frog and Toad queerness to me, even if they have no conventionally romantic involvement with each other, is the subversiveness of their relationship. To never marry and live alone with your bachelor friend, with whom you are emotionally intimate and is the primary recipient of your affection as your dedicated partner in life, is not socially normal, and fairly queer. That relationship can stay undefined without losing any of its meaningfulness, because it is not dependent on definition, only love and contentment. I’m so sorry for this stupidly long comment, I probably don’t know what I’m taking about.

Agostino Arrivabene's art reminds me of fungus too, the way it's growing from the person. It feels almost lucid with some of the brushstrokes and the depth of each painting. It's actually crazy. I really enjoyed your interpretation of the art, it shows how art truly is up to each individual's perspective.

the religious trauma body horror reminds me of the verses from Vignette (and so many of other twenty one pilots song with violent, religious, addiction filled mental imagery.) "Not sure when it started Peeling from his bones Piece it back together all alone Hope it held together long enough for he To pitch the greener grasses and hope that she would agree Fresh off a binger in the woods, flesh covered in bites Testing what is real, what is good, man It's been a long night" & "-Now he can't hold out his hand without it shaking Hounded by a bunch of dead when the search party found him Fresh off a binger in the woods, flesh covered in bites"
