I have owned my Yamaha XJ 900 58L for about twenty years and I always change the oil filter without having to remove an exhaust pipe. You have also installed the new oil filter upside down and forgotten the large disc between the spring and the oil filter. And the worst mistake: The oil filter housing was screwed on upside down! This means that it has no proper hold because the recess on the housing does not engage in the intended place in the engine housing. No new gasket and screw tightened without a torque spanner (15 Nm). Pretty much everything is done wrong in this video!

Thank you for your constructive criticism on this one. I have revieved the online spare parts catalogue and indeed there should be a washer between the spring and the oil filter which I seem to miss. I have bought the bike in used condition with 68000 km on the clock. I have had it for 9 years now. It has now about 113000 km on it, no issues whatsoever. The washer was missing all the way through I guess. I changed the oil filter about 9 times now and have always put it the same way and position I have found it when disassembling the filter element for the first time. Which is as shown in the video. Now, after having a look at the diagram, you are right and the filter is indeed placed the wrong way in the housing. As for the alignment of the oil filter housing, it has the torque engraved on it and the way it is installed right now the letters have normal orientation. If I did it the way you suggest, it would have been upside down in my opinion. It sits nicely and does seal off the oil perfectly, so no issue there. You can replace the oil filter without removing at least one inner pipe? Mad respect for this, I can't pull it off at all. I have mentioned that one - s h o u l d - use a new gasket / o-ring in the video. I didn't, since I have anticipated that the old one would still be good for at least one interval. I have a torque spanner and have use it avidly on the more sensitive parts like the camshaft bearings which should be tightened to 10nm for example. Then again, some things can be tightened with some common sense.. In any case, none of my videos are meant to be an official maintenance instruction or tutorial. Cheers

100% correct. There is one place along the exhaust downpipe where the filter will squeak through.

Mine is a 2005 and I just rebuilt it to 150cc. Had to do certain changes to the main jeg and carb needle. Runs good! 30k on the clock. I have it as a hobby and have many tools for it. The engine is easy to deal with, cheap parts and uses little gasoline. I will try to make it last for many more years!

Thanks for the details. Last time I changed the oil w/o Filter, next time I will need to remove the exhaust. On my 4BB the 3rd exhaust (front view) is hindering the oil filter cap to be removed .... Bad construction if you ask me.
@E6add9

Removing the exhaust is always a hassle. I tend to change the oil every 5000 km, including the filter. I think changing the filter every other time would be sufficient in my case, then again it depends on the mileage performance between those changes.

just use a needle or a small hook, just pull it, put the new one with a plastic on the shaft to.avoid scratches and presa with the old one until it fits.

@E6add9

I am currently looking for used engine cases/halves. Too much hassle with restoring the seats. Once I find some, i'll put it back together, with some new bearings. The crakshaft bearings still seem ok, surprisingly. They'll go back into service. I bought the bike back in 2006, it was a demonstrator with only 70km on the clock, so brand new basically. Used it every day, all seasons for a couple of years. Oil change, every 5 thousand km using fully synthetic 10w40 oil. Stay tuned for more vids ;)

The threads are not that much of a problem. I have disassembled the engine completely some time ago, to find that the bearing seats are completely worn out. Especially the gearbox bearing seats. I will upload a short video about that in the near future.

Also diese Schranke..
