I want to know if this was the planned ending or an actual alternate ending. If this is the real ending then combined with the other deleted scenes where Klara made a lot more accusations and then is carried by him while she hugs him, creates questions a plenty of who short JR, I mean who shot him and why. Was he shot by the father who seen him carrying her and the hugging and now thinks he was guilty after all? Or someone else who saw the carrying and figured he was guilty after all? With that shot and the unknown shooter running away crucially combined with the carrying scene it means she really could have been telling the truth the whole time and he was really lying the whole time. It just makes the movie a mess. I am glad it was not selected to be the actual ending. But it really does change everything if it was the actual planned ending and those lines from the mom in the deleted scenes.

I dont find this ending bad at all, because its the only one in which the community is actually confronted with what they did. In the films actual ending, the people of the town might rationalise their abuse towards Lucas by telling themselves that at the end of the day, everything is more or less back to how it was before, whether or not they personally believed him to be a pdf-file or even directly hurt him (like the dog killing or the supermarket situation) or not, but that is not the case for Lucas. He has to live in a state of paranoia for the rest of his life, especially when you consider how some people are too stubborn to ever change their mind once they latched on to a given narrative. I imagine that even if Klara grew up and were to express that Lucas didnt abuse her in a unambiguous manner, some people would still perceive him as a p$do.

I'm glad they didn't go with this ending. The original is obviously way more impactful to Lucas in the context of the narrative along with giving a never ending sense of tension. This ending however feels like they created it with the intention of shocking the audience and sacrificing any care for the character when making it.

I'm actually surprised Vinterberg chose to film this. When you have the power of the actual ending, this alternate ending makes no sense. The missed shot is his realisation that this will be hanging over his head for the rest of his life. And, of course, the shooter is Torsten, who unwittingly set the ball rolling in the first place.
@HypocritesExposd

Perhaps the director did not know how either ending would look/feel/work until seeing them both? Perhaps this was the original ending and the other was so much better that it was chosen instead? Convenient how you list the positives of the original ending, critique this one as being inferior, but fail to mention the positives of this one.

i believe mads said in multiple interviews that he'd pushed for a darker ending and i believe this is it. vinterberg probably agreed to give it a go, and they ultimately decided on the original ending.

I'm not watching this video because I just finished the movie and I couldn't take seeing this alternate ending atm. When the 1 year time skip happened and I realized that the group gathered to go hunting I immedietly thought "he is going to die in the end". I'm glad Lucas did not die becasue for the whole gut wrenching ride this movie has been, seeing him die in the end would have been the last nail in the coffin. I don't like it at all but had the ending been him dying I think it would've worked well with the whole theme that is injustice. And with the punches this movie has been throwing at me I fully expected it.

It's likely that Agnes was the one who gutted Fanny like a swine in a butchery, given how she reluctantly said "I don't know", when Klara asked about the deceased dog. Wouldn't be crazy if Torsten shot him dead in this alternate ending, hinting by the way he looked at him before the deer hunt started.

Whaaaat?!?!? Is this real? Mental, chicken oriental. I'm watching it again for about the third or fourth time. The actual ending is definitely the right choice, this is too obvious. The actual ending has many more layers to it (see comments below) but this ending is just boom, end. He dies. Revenge is taken. I never had any idea who took the shot, surely we are not supposed to know?..... but looking at the comments below, people seem to think its Klara's brother? That right? Happy New Year everyone! 👍🙂❤

What if I tell you he actually did it? If someone is interested, i can give some other evidences, but here are the majors: 1. He didn't know which kid the teacher was talking about until she told him, which was kinda obvious it was klara and he didn't mentioned she kissed him, gave him letters or anything; 2. He used to also abuse her brother. You can see it everytime they meet, specially on that christmas scene that he cries talking to her, as if he is sorry that it happened to her either. In the beginning, lucas tells klara he used to be a teacher in her brothers school; 3. Still about the brother, the scene they are celebrating marcus's hunting license, the brother is shown purposedly frame under a deer's antlers, showing he is the 'pray' and Lucas the 'predator'. He is the one who shot lucas and purposedly missed, showing him he knows who he is and he won't let it happen any longer; 4. The basement the kids talk about is actually on marcus's rich godfather house, which probably was envolved in all the abuses. I believe on the last interaction between klara and lucas, she is framed perfectly centered in the basement's door; 5. Klara never said she lied; I'm brazilian and some subtitles are translated to her saying she lied, but apparently in danish she said something related to 'I said wrong things'; 6. Above all, it always bothered me his lack of self defense. His expression were ambiguous through the whole film, potentialized by mikkelsen's stunning performance. Basically Vintenberg trolled us all. I recommend everyone to watch it again with a different perspective. This movie is truly a piece of art.

I don't know where exactly the basis is for this theory of yours. In Mike Goodridge's interview with the director, Thomas Vinterberg, this is a DIRECT quote, 'No instance of abuse wrongdoing takes place in The Hunt. It is a more classic story of an unjustly accused man, Lucas - who, VINTERBERG says, is UNQUESTIONABLY INNOCENT - becomes the target of hatred by all in a small rural town where the film is set.' And from another segment of that very same interview, 'In the frenzy of excitement that greeted Thomas Vinterberg's international smash Festen (The Celebration) in 1998, he received numerous entreaties from all manner of people. One was a Danish psychiatrist who handed him a file of cases and said he had a responsibility to explore THE OTHER SIDE OF ABUSE ISSUES in the film (for context, Festen dealt with the discovery of familial sexual abuse, and this psychiatrist proposed a concept for a film on unjust accusations on the same matter to the director). Overwhelmed with travel, development and new projects, he shelved it. Eight years later, Vinterberg was cleaning up his desk and came across the doctor's file. "I read it and was totally stunned by it," he explains. "I felt like I had to do this movie." ' You can read the full interview in the May 2012 issue of FILM.

@@franchstar1 No basis, observation only. The little signs Vintenberg shows in some scenes are too clever to not be premeditated, although i cant say it was. For me, klara's brother is the key to understand the whole film. You should watch it again man, trust me. And thanks for the reply, really made me question it Edit: actually, you can say the brother is where the basis of the theory is. Pretty solid one imo

1. maybe he didn't know about it because he didn't do it? It is only obvious to you because of the narrative- the kisses and letter are normal kids stuff. 2. her brother was sad because he thinks she was abused. 3. that's a massive leap, I could also say he is paired with the horns because he shoots at lucas at the end, following the hunter analogy. 4. another assumption. The more obvious explanation is that these shared accounts are the result of extremely problematic interviewing, which was established to be the case. 5. She says multiple times that he didn't do anything? 6. yes, the point is that you can't disprove stuff like this. He tries emotional appeals but everyone is completely against him already. I do find it ironic that even with the most obvious story about mass hysteria and wrong accusations, you still somehow managed to think it was him. Incredible. I was somewhat sceptical of the story, thinking surely people couldn't be that retarded in real life, but here you have it.
