Why did he have a heart attack/ could not breathe?
@jimgoldslawger

Rik Stokvis because they all had to go on a 20 mile hike in full gear as punishment for Doss. After the run he "collapsed". Usually a sign of severe dehydration or potentially a heart defect or heart attack. Most likely caused by heat exhaustion or could just be hereditary.

I had heard the story of Private Doss before he came to our high school in the 60s. At that point, he was still so shy he wouldn't speak to us unless someone stood on the platform with him and asked him questions. Clearly, the person who undertook to ask him questions on that occasion was not well prepared to do so. Afterward, however, when I realized Private Doss was signing scraps of paper for the other students, I went and got my pocket-sized Bible and he signed it. In the 60s, I fully expected to be drafted and I hoped that if I was drafted, I'd could take that Bible with me, not because I'm superstitious but because I wanted to be reminded that it is possible to have the kind of courage Private Doss had. When our son was in his teens, I gave him that Bible. He still has it and I hope, when our grandson , Remington, is in his teens, Ross will give Remington that Bible. There are other stories that are so inspiring they move me to tears. Some of those other stories have also been made into movies. I'm glad Mel Gibson was the movie-make to take on this story because he is such a great "story-teller".
