I had a teacher many years ago who would simply stop talking and just stare at the person disrupting the class. The teacher wouldn't say a word, just stare. That usually got the offending party to shut the hell up. Silence is very powerful and gets the point across of people not being there to listen to your conversations.

I am a retired professor . Five years ago I spoke to several students in a similar but more polite manner. A few days after the grades were posted, I got my butt chewed out by the dept. head. We have a polite “come to Jesus” conversation after that. Good for him.

My thought is that he handled it improperly. He should have moved the talkers and not suggest 'getting a room'. Disgusting.

Love how this guy thinks it’s cool to probably say absolutely nothing about the behavior and then completely humiliate a student in front of the class. Soooooo cool dude

14 years ago. Today the students would claim they were oppressed and victims of micro aggression. The teacher would be fired and the school would apologize to the pvnks causing the disruption.

Trying to be verbally trendy. Bit stupid not to have said something earlier on or made it crystal clear on day 1 that distracting chatter will not be tolerated. What's his problem? He's a university professor. He has the right to effectively control his lectures. Wants to be liked! As well, "boiling inside", in repressed resentment, is not very mature or lawerly behaviour. Fail, Professor Garland.

I was the student who told these two girls to be quiet or leave. They mocked me and said I was 'jealous.' We tried to ignore them, too, but they sat in the front of class and just talked smack about everything. Not even quietly. I paid for my professor to lecture and not to hear you and your stupidity. Yay to this prof.

i was listening to all the good points he was bringing out regarding his constructive criticism but i must have missed the part where he let them know earlier that they were causing him an issue. instead of them having their ears tickled in a sense by not just telling them beforehand about his problem with them. they are likely wrong for their manors but imo professor Garland is no better. my constructive criticism is something that i would offer here but to me, public humiliation is like an act of violence or aggression and is almost like making a declaration of war with their emotions. mostly because it is unnecessary but it also leaves the individual with shame and steals their dignity. i have more to this of course but to finish up with what i would like to get across is that if you think of the sun tzu quote about it being best to win a war without fighting, then surely any attempt to prevent such a hostile environment wouldnt be so futile after all.

Good for him. I had to take organic chemistry, not easy, and at one point the professor stopped the lecture to chastise some pretty girl chatterbox. There was one pimple-face punk who seemed to always be behind me, there were 400 seats and he was always behind mine, and I eventually turned around and told him I was paying to listen to the lecture and not to him and his jaw hit the floor like I had slapped him. And that was the last lecture I saw him in. If nothing else, a science class is good for weeding out people who don't belong in school.
