I have a question, this technique only works if the opponent is just threatening with the knife still, if he is really with the intention of sticking it will not stop and the harder he is untrained movement will be fast making it impossible to disarm...
@Maniacforce1

when this technique fails as it does several times in this demo the attacker is still holding the knife & wont be holding it out for you to try again

@riggs169 For a former practitioner of different martials and ninjutsu, I understand what you mean. But for purpose of demonstration it is done so that you understand the movement that needs to be done to disarm your attacker. But in a real situation you'll have to be fast else you'll die. Notice the stance he take when facing an opponent with a knife. He prepares a kind of gap to allow for the guy to come in, and then one step retreat to avoid and counter attack.

I like this... a lot. The pressure on the leading edge of the knife is something that a random attacker might not be able to compensate for while he/she is slapped on the wrist, and because of the open palm strike the worst wound you might come out with (if done properly) is a shallow slice across or a prick in the palm. Personally, it's a very effective way to disarm a knife attacker.

@mtgdustin True, no one will stand and let you "slap em around"...but one thing is to be noted from this...In a real life situation when someone is hell bent on putting all their body into one attack and you evade it there is a sort of "pause" and re-group. I have experienced it before.

Real knifers do not hold a knife as most schools have them do in demos. The blade is at the bottom end of the hand, the cutting edge facing outward, close to the wrist. The knifer can punch, knife to his rear, and more. And try to use those cute disarming techniques, when you cannot grab the write without being cut. A knifer with any skills prefers the simple *gran and stab*., not a thrust.

With all due respect budofist, there are thousands of methods of disarming knives, this is just one out of many approaches.I not so naive to think that one methods can use for all knife attacks. A Budoka adapts and adjust whenever necessary to thwart off an attack. I've personally used this method to disarm an opponent. Kali fighters are extremely skillful knife fighters but no one is invincible where they can't be defeated, or we all would be learning Kali. My students are well trained.

wouldn't it be safer to keep contact with the wrist once you've made the cross block and then go for the lock or whatever after your already in control of it? That is one method but my approach here is to create an shocking affect to hopefully disarm your opponent,following up with securing the wrist.This is just one of many defensive methods to achieve your objective,thanks for input.

Yeah, given you have to do this thing, you may as well learn as many ways of doing it as possible, as it could come in handy. But, as a primary empty hand response to a knife, I only go straight in and take the guys balance. I never try to mess around with his knife/knife hand perse. I get past it and go straight for his balance and control that arm, and break that arm and attack everything else I can, but only if that arm is controlled and that knife disabled from his control.

My approach to budo in my many years of studies is an approach to the principle concept of budo not just the traditional physical approach.The ninjutsu concepts leaves room for innovation,creativity and adaption without leaving sight of tradition.Remember ninjutsu's origin coming from Chinese influence.I believe in the ninjutsu concept of unorthodoxy and awkwardness.The Great Bushi Masters were innovators,I choose to follow the path of the masters.The source of all knowledge come GODTheknower.
