From the end of the 16th century, the Baroque period entered the terminology of art critics to designate broken forms opposing harmonious proportionality, as well as ancient norms taken up by the so-called « classical » trend of the end of the 17th century, namely the proportion, harmony, balance and symmetry. The Baroque is characterized, in opposition to the Renaissance, by a new relationship between being and the world. This artistic movement established itself throughout Catholic Europe in the 17th century, in architecture, painting, literature, music and dance. It serves the ideas and directives, notably those of the Counter-Reformation. So, the Catholic Church codified and encouraged an Art in the service of the faith. Faced with Protestant austerity, the Catholic clergy preaches a vigorous, lively and grandiose image for a « Christian » art of exuberance and splendor. The artists then broadcast the vibrant image of a Christianity open to the world and the infinite. LM
