carvingonwood.com/Power-Relief... Just like when doing a relief carving with gouges we must establish levels. Levels in a relief carving project at depth, and create a three dimensionality to the peace. Establishing the initial levels is exactly the same no matter what tools you use.
With a high-speed hand piece we will use a diamond football shaped burr to help establish the initial levels of this design. Much like with all relief carvings we outline around the design to begin carving the design into the wood. This is accomplished with the diamond football.
This daisy relief carving has six basic levels; the background, the leaves, three levels of petals, and a center.
During the initial establishment of these levels trace along the lines that you have created during the design transfer step. In subsequent steps each level will be carved to its final depth, and detail will be added to each area.
