Nielsen was actually well-known for playing serious roles -- usually villains -- before starring in Airplane. The Zuckers intentionally cast some serious actors to make everything more ridiculous. Lloyd Bridges and Robert Stack also weren't on any lists of famous comedic actors.

The thing people forge tend to forget about Leslie Nielsen, due to his fantastic comedic performances in AIRPLANE and the POLICE SQUAD/THE NAKED GUN franchise, is that he got his start in more serious roles in the 1950s. Science fiction classics like 1956's FORBIDDEN PLANET and the 1952 anthology television series TALES OF TOMORROW are just a couple of examples that really show Nielsen could tackle serious roles as well as those that tickled the funny bone. (Creepshow) Frank Drebin has a bloodlust after his 300th drug dealer kill, especially since the last three he backed over with his car. But seriously, before Nielsen went on to do more lighthearted movies like Airplane! and Naked Gun, the stuff we're more familiar with these days, he was more notable for doing performances in more dramatic pieces. This is what made his a good choice for comedy, as he could do a deadpan portrayal to get the performances we got in those movies. Aside from that, he made for some great villainous performances. (Brain Damage) I love Aylmer. At first he seems like a proper gentleman-- worm thing, but as the movie progresses, he proves to be much more than just a worm that can hand out acid trips. He is a devious parasite, and his appetite includes a constant supply of BRAINS.

Sorry if I'm being harsh, I'm not trying to be rude, it's just that I find this mistake unacceptable if you want to be taken seriously by (maybe a bit too much) hardcore fans of the horror genre... 🤷♂
