Rethink souvenirs- A souvenir can be a scarf you needed. Or earrings that match most of your outfits. A souvenir doesn’t have to be a mug or magnet.

I personally see souvenir shopping as a chance to get some early holiday (or birthday shopping) done. However, I do tend to have a more minimalist mindset with this as well because while some of my family members enjoy getting physical gifts, they don't want things that they don't enjoy or don't get value out of. :)

I love buying one, special item on my trips. I have a lot of tacky souvenirs from my childhood trips, but now I prefer to splurge on one or two more expensive, better quality items, like jewlery. One of my favourite souvenirs is mask from Venice - it wasn't cheap, but now I have a beautiful mask to hang on a wall

I’m currently on a minimal journey- but I feel like one area I disagree on for my family personally is seasonal decorations. While I have minimized this area of my life quite a lot- I do have some Christmas and Halloween decor, and I feel like as a mother that’s a magic I want in my home for my child. That being said- I’m also very aesthetic in general and probably have more home decor than most minimalists ever would 🤣 even though I wish desperately that the minimal aesthetic suited me more. 🖤

Peaceful Phoenix I believe you can be a minimalist but still have an abundance of certain categories. A traveler might want to collect a magnet from every where he has been. Someone who is into cooking might have single use utensils. A Mom might have tons of holiday decorations because her family enjoys the traditions. I would say that if someone had multiples of many or all categories though they may not be a true minimalist.

This list was totally meant to be customized for your situation. I do decorate a bit for Christmas, and I think especially with kids, that’s a fun tradition that really brings people together. Like I said, everyone situation is different. And I think you’ve thought through this well 🥰

I have Christmas things, but I do not decorate a lot and only decorate our family room. If I had little kids, I would also do a bit of Halloween decorating. Less is more when it comes to holiday decorating and it is less for a landfill later.

Diane I definitely don’t have a lot. And I’m very environmentally friendly. However I come from a family that is Christmas crazed and my parents usually buy us decorations for holidays every year. They are what you might call maximalists I suppose. Very wealthy, live in a huge house- very much the opposite of my modest, low wage lifestyle. I think not adding to landfills is very important. However if something makes you happy and will last you a life time I think that’s wonderful. Many of my decorations are handed down from my grandparents, meaning my father grew up with them as a child. And I’m 32 so that tells you about how long these things have been around 😉

Hi Ashley! I follow your channel pretty regularly. I find your content informative and inspiring. I agree with almost all of the items you have listed that a minimalist would never buy. Interestingly, I have the opposite opinion about buying items on black Friday. I actually think its a great time to invest in high dollar quality items that may be on sale at a more reasonable price for people who have to stick to a budget. For example, last year I bought a robot vacuum for roughly $100 less than the normal price, and it has proven to be a great investment. I think that if you choose black Friday deals with intention, you can save money and invest in valuable items. I just wanted to share my perspective on that point. Thanks!

The As Seen On TV gadgets are geared toward disabled and/or elderly people, just to let everyone know! They're of little used to the abled folks, sure, but a massive life changer for us disabled folk! So you may find minimalists who are disabled, but may have some great use out of that stuff. :)

I'm new to the minimalist community, so I have been in the initial decluttering stage since January. I keep a list of things I no longer need to buy on the side of my fridge. It is in plain view, so I can see and feel my progress. Most of the things are like cleaning products and single use supplies, like drier sheets (replaced with wool balls) and swiffer covers (replaced with any sort of microfiber cloth).

I think buying a large home is not always to accommodate more “stuff” although that often happens. Over the years we have bought three homes, each one larger than its predecessor. We look at it as an investment for our future. Our home now has at least tripled in price in the last 20 years. We could easily sell it and move into a much smaller home and have a huge retirement fund. I understand it’s not necessarily what a minimalist would do but it’s definitely a great financial decision where we live in Canada (just outside of Toronto). Meanwhile I am attempting to declutter my home at a snails pace....lol! Thanks for your advice.

Your comments on the Black Friday deals makes me think about other store-wide sales that aren't necessarily fast fashion (like at boutiques, outlet malls or even secondhand shops). I work at Goodwill, and on the first Saturday of the month, we have a store-wide sale where everything is 50% off. I wonder if this could also lead into what Black Friday produces, or if the concept is similar at least since it can lead to shopping trips that aren't well thought out, or even the justification of buying things just because it's a better deal.
@AshlynneEaton
5 жыл бұрын
I think that’s definitely a thing. The beauty of sales is that sometimes they can allow people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to buy things to do so. But they also incentivize people who already have too much to keep buying. It can be a tricky situation 💙

Souvenirs: I try to get something special or useful if I have to have something. Not those cringey keychains or mass produced items but perhaps a special seashell I found on the beach or my MIL once bought us themed oven mitts from a place she visited so those were useful and my husband's favorites. Physical media: Definitely not true for me in regards to books but I no longer buy DVDs or CDs. I decluttered all but a few that were special to me. I do read more ebooks now but nothing beats a physical copy for me. I do try to use my library more but if I find good book deals, those are too hard to resist. But I've been reading a good chunk of what I buy and if I don't enjoy the book enough to want to re-read it, I'll gift it it to a friend or donate it. Single use gadgets: I'm not sure I've ever personally bought any of these. We do have a waffle maker but little hard to make those any other way, ha. Most of those items don't work so hot anyway. Collections: I collect classic books and pencils but that's about it. And I definitely don't buy as much of either anymore. Duplicates: Only certain items like scissors, craft items, and duplicates of things my husband often uses (like two sets of tongs, otherwise I'd have to wash dishes daily). Storage Containers: I used to be very bad for this but I decluttered a lot of them and now I only buy them if needed, since I am an artist and still have to occasionally change up my organization. But I honestly can't think of the last time I bought a storage item. Black Friday deals: I don't even want to leave the house on this day. Not a fan at all. No deals are worth that craziness. Even worse that it's turned into Black Thanksgiving :( Trendy Clothing: Not really, I buy what flatters me and is comfy. Square Footage: We did size up compared to our apartment but our house is actually the perfect size for us and our dreams. Definitely not huge, though the backyard is sizable, and that brings us the most joy. Decor for every season: While I am very seasonal, I have slacked off a little and only change up decor for Summer, Fall/Halloween, and Christmas. I have a few Valentine's/Easter/4th of July items but feel no need to really go all out like I used to. I mostly focus on the big holidays and I have been focusing more on quality decor rather than just lots of stuff that doesn't look good.

I do collect antique teacups, but I get them all secondhand and I use them several times a day, not just for my tea, but for small food, bird-feeders, pens on my desk, all kinds of things. BUT YES, collections are a hard one. I used to collect movie posters, which I LOVE, but the more valuable the poster, the more expensive the frame is, and that gets untenable. So they stay rolled up and in a closet? What good is that? I kept a few that mean a lot to me, and I gave the rest to my nephew and a couple to a kid's hospital (they loved the original Harry Potter!). And I have an issue now with Halloween... I love it, and pretty much leave it up year-round, because I don't have a spouse or children to answer to. :p But there's a definite limit! And I need to do better about thinking I need every rubber bat in creation. SIGH. Thanks, as always, for your input!

I don't think buying trendy things is a waste. Sometimes if a minimalist truly likes a trend, I'd say it would be ok to buy that item. As long as a person doesn't treat trendy items as if they're something for only one season, I think that getting that one trendy sweater or hair accessory that you really think you would love is absolutely fine.

I agree about multiise items but every now and again the compromises become an issue and I revert to single use items. I got a second hand car, old, high milage but fun but also missing satnav, multi disc CD player and dashcam. But hey the phone has apps for satnav, dashcam, music streamer, internet radio and in car interface (big buttons and voice control). So I wire up an aux line input and fix a dashboard holder for the phone. I am using GPS navigation, playing a selection of music and almost getting the dashcam to run as well (it sometimes stops when you switch foreground applications but does not tell you). Great, save upgrading the in car entertainment, no need for dashcam and something else a thief might want to break in for. Only it runs out of juice fast than the car battery can charge it. On long distance you loose everything including normal phone use and use as your only camera/camcorder. Perhaps the upgrade and single use items are a lot less bother. Oh and the phone gets so hot the video of the dashcam shuts down to cool off. The mobile phone is the centre of a the universe for portable devices replacing Walkmans, Discmans, MP3 players, wrist watch and much of the functions that I had to use a laptop for. The desktop has taken over from TV , radio, news papers, magazines and all entertainment in the house. I have a quad TV recorder card and so pick up satellite and terrestial TV and radio boardcasts, record what interests me and chose the time I want to watch or listen . But sometimes I am working on editing a video or handling a number of large images when playback on the i7 8 core chip does not fit in. Switching back to TV, DVD player or the FM radio as single use devices is needed. I have multitool. Great for carrying around. A general purpose one for the pocket. A bicycle one for the handlebar bag and a larger one for most small tasks. Every now and again these are not comfortable to use, the bulk gets in the way of handling and you have to go to the tool box and get the single use screw driver or heavy duty pilers that will never break on you. I guess it is being flexible, each use case is different and sometimes other choices have to be made.
