What a gorgeous bike. Takes me back to my youth. I'm 77 years old and ride a 71 plate Indian 350 Meteor at the moment but would love to own a RE 250 again.

My mate had one of those in 1970, same colour a bit tatty, me and my other mate had Honda C200 's 90cc. They all had about the same power, but i did like the Enfield more for its look's, i always liked the small sidelights, i guess that's why I have a Classic 500 now.

Interesting front fork deaign: leading links, but styled to look a lot like telescopics.

My super 5 was red with a deep front mudguard, lovely bike although the gears were a bit iffy

This brings back a few memories.. My Dad had a '63 Crusader Sports, the first bike we restored together in fact. He thrashed it mercilessly wherever he went and even took Mum on the pillion pretty regularly (both of them are sadly passed away now..) One hot day he arrived at my house unexpectedly after a good thrashing and just after he pulled up it suddenly puked about half a cup of oil out of the engine breather and all over my drive, so he let it cool down a bit while we had a cuppa, then trundled it home for a top-up of oil ! - Apart from that one time it was always totally oil-tight so the 'Royal Oilfield' nickname didn't apply !.. He sold it to fund an AJS restoration project but he always regretted having to let it go.. VVL 290 where are you now ?!!..

Are you sure about the year as officially the Super 5 was not launched until1962.

The next years models would have been made in the last few months of the previous year so it might be a 62 model registered in late 61 .

@@xvdd1 I had a 62 Royal Enfield Crusader Sports but I got it in October 61 . The new models were brought out in October to coincide with the Motorbike show which I think was was held at the Earls Court

@@philtaylor1588 Thanks for that, information on the subject is difficult to find as it does not seem to have been committed to the WWW, one thing that did come up though is according to Grace's Guide the 1961 Motorcycle show at Earls Court was not held but no more information as to the reason was given so was it held somewhere else that year, again I could not discover this.

That’s a bargain seeing the condition it’s in. When you checked the oil I saw a yellow dart indicator nearby on the engine and I wonder what it indicates. (?) So LAP, Let’s Ask Peter.

Leaking oil is good sign. If it doesn't then the engine is empty. I love Enfield. Got 2 of them.
