This and a number of other amazing 35mm colour cinefilm was recorded by Society committee member, Danny Minghella. Danny was an avid film maker and was requested to record this and other films on behalf of the Society. These cinefilms had remained from world view and in Danny’s possession up to his passing in the early 2000’s, when these were passed to me by his family.
The film commences in St Michael’s School, on George Leigh Street, Ancoats. We see the stalwart committee members Anthony and Lucien Biagioni, Albert and Bernard Salvatore, Joseph Boggiano, preparing the statues for the procession and then on the procession day, taking them on to George Leigh Street where that practice continues today.
The procession continues through the streets of Manchester to Albert Square for the blessing from the Catholic Bishop Bernard Beck. Throughout the video we see the streets of Manchester filed with the vibrant colours of the Italian community with the ladies and girls resplendent in their national costumes and children and men in their pristine suits, white shirts andd various coloured sashes. My uncle’s, Society Treasurer Carmine Schiavo and President Albert Tiani can be seen many times proudly walking and leading the community.
