Awesome! It's always great to hear how they just hold up mile after mile. What is really cool is that if your T-40 has a nice finish on it.....just play it HARD, 7 nights a week for 40 years and toss it down the stairs to the trailer to throw in there, with or without a case.......then it will look great WITHOUT the finish. Just a bit of sand paper at that point and it will look like a brand new "NATURAL" finished one. lol

The phase switch - yes it reverses the bridge pickup which throws it out of phase with the neck pickup, but if you have selected the bridge pickup in single coil mode then that switch selects either of the two coils. And they do sound differently. You can select the one closest to the bridge or the other one. It will do this with both bridge+neck pickups selected with the bridge pickup as single coil, but then one of them will be out of phase to the neck pickup.

To me that phase switch offers a lot of musical possiblities, especially when other instruments drop out and the bass is solo'd. It's like a punchy telephonic sound. Great video!!!

One thing to mention, as I've gotten back into my t-40 nerdiness as of late, is that the volume pots have caps on them, so having both pickups on, while rolling the volume off of one does have a slightly different sound than the pickup soloed. For instance you can get a convincing P bass sound by turning on both pickups in single coil mode, then rolling the bridge pickup completely off, and putting the neck volume at 7. It's subtle, but even the volume pots did something of these crazy beasts!

Right on Scott , these are meant to be built as you described . I have one of the first ones of the line from 1978 Swamp Ash . This thing has never broken down and was on Southern Rock Records , To Funk , Rock , Country , Alternive. I had it in a pro studio for 25 years and used it on everything . I have everything from a fender P to a Modulus and seen them all . These will be around for a 100yrs and still working . Chip Todd and Hartley did do it right back in the day !!!

The T-40 has always been a very misunderstood and under-appreciated instrument in my opinion. I owned one and loved the incredible build quality and tolerences (Hartley Peavey pioneered the use of CNC machines in guitar production back in the day), the amazing variety of tones due to the advanced passive circuit (good job explaining it Scott!), and the overall playability ... but-like you mention here- the dang thing was just TOOOoooo heavy! By the middle of the 4th set of the gig, I was more than ready to take it off! So, I got rid of it and moved on for more comfort. Maybe if I had gone all Paul Goddard and just played sitting down, I'd still own it! Great review Scott, what other cool basses have you got hiding in the bat cave, hmmmm?

@Tommorichards Thank you. What you are seeing is the result of the Micro Tilt neck adjustment feature that is found on all of your highest grade bolt on neck guitars. You can just loosen a couple of screws on the neck and use an Allen wrench in the micro tilt adjustment hole in the neck plate to adjust the tilt of the neck instead of having to shim the neck to get whatever neck angle you want. That is something that you REALLY, REALLY want in all fine instruments. So, it's a GOOD thing.

@TheGargoyleLives It's possible that the truss rod is broke. Have you tightened the truss rod all the way until it won't turn any more? Of course, that will let you know if it's broke or not. If you can get it tightened to the max, that should straighten that sucker out all the way and by morning, you would probably have to back it off a turn or so. So, give that a shot and see that the truss rod indeed will tighten all the way.

Too lazy to read if it's already stated by someone else, but the phase switch is fully usable if you roll off one of the volume knobs (i do it mainly with the bridge pickup) - you get back the lowend then, and a fully distinct and tasty "phase tone". Really good review anyway, one that made me buy my T40.

Yeah, I always keep Elixir Polyweb strings on EVERYTHING, so they sound like you just put them on for the entire time that they are on. I love those strings. I'm so sick that they discontinued the Bass Strings. I've got a couple hunded sets here, so I'll be good for a while. Most folks probably are playing with the dead strings on and most probably have SOMETHING on their bass turned down for some reason. I always run everything maxed on the bass and just go to the amp for any adjustments.

Hey Scott, fan of the channel. Just pick up a 79' T-40 that just arrived at my house yesterday. Looks great but the truss rod is not adjusted correctly so the neck has a moderate bow. I'm going to work on it tonight to make sure the truss rod still works, if it is broken I'll send it back. But man, this thing sounds great. THANK YOU Scott for giving the venerable T40 its DUE! Speaking truth to ignorance is an admirable undertaking! For the same reason that when I could still ride motorcycles, I continued to ride my 40 year old Norton Commando rather than spending money on a newer model type, I choose to use my T40 as my "go to" number one bass. If it does what it is supposed to do, and does it very well, what is the point of buying new, outside of variety, vanity or conformity? I honestly believe that this tone monster can simulate the sound of a "P", "J", "MM" and (if you hold your tongue right) the mighty Rickenbacker! As you so competently demonstrated, all modern bass styles can be accomplished with this "classic" bass from the 70s. Popping, slapping, tapping....it's all there! Good ol' finger-picking sounds great as well. I can't think of a popular style of bass playing that cannot be done very well with either the "toaster pickup" or the "blade pickup" T40. As for price, I have to imagine that you acquired yours a few years ago. In the two years I have been putting together my "T" collection, I have seen T40s jump considerably in price on Evilbay. Average SELLING price appears to be in the $300s today, with some loons ASKING as much as $600.00. I bought my "natural" ash-bodied T40 with an original lined Peavey Contour Case for $250.00 over a year ago. For that kind of money, there is NOTHING you can buy that would be more than a pimple on the ass of any T40 out there! $250.00 would be a modest down payment on an MIA Fender, and the Fender could not get ALL the tones possible with a T40. The same goes for any EBMM product. Or Ricks, for that matter. EVERY bass player should own at least one. I am on my way to owning as many different colors and year model T40s as I can find, in addition to the T20, T20FL and T45 I already have. All bassists should onsider it as the "Swiss Army Knife" of bass guitars, and give their Tonal Paintbox another fine brush for creating the ultimate masterpiece!

@stonedrocker666 Yes, very much so. The tone roll off on the single coils works great from 10 until it reaches the point at 7 where it turns into a humbucker and then the tone roll off happens again from there to 0. Why they didn't simply put the split at 5 and an indent so that you could FEEL where the split takes place, is beyond me. It would've been a nice feature for sure.

@rezisehtnys Thank you very much! Yeah, Peavey is the hidden treasure of all guitars for sure. I would pay a grand for one of these any day of the week before I would pay it for any other bass. They are just that good. These are indestructable too. Peavey will never have to "reissue" these. They will always be around, plenty of them and the prices are too good to pass up. NOBODY makes a better bass in this price range, and in most cases...in any price range. Thanks again!

@TheMAJofficial It's all so very easy. Just unsoldering a ground wire and a hot wire in most cases and putting the new pickup in it's place and solder the 2 wires back where the old one's are. If you have something more complex like a Peavey, then it's just a matter of if you are replacing the pickups with new pickups that you want to do all that groovy stuff, coil splitting, and out of phase etc. Then it's still the same colored wire going to where the original one was. Quite easy my friend.

@TheGargoyleLives It sounds like it's a snapped truss rod. So, you would be looking at either the nut on the butt end of the neck is off, or the rod is simply snapped. So, that would mean getting a new neck sadly. I'm guessing that the seller knew this when he sold it. I would question him on it.

@TheGargoyleLives Hi my man, I do have all of the original wrenches with the ones I buy, but I keep a set of a few hundred truss rod wrenches in my tool kit, both Allen wrenches and the box wrenches for the Gibsons, Ovations, Peavey's etc. The Ebay Guitar Luthier section has sellers that sell complete sets of these both regular and metric, so I just grab lots of sets of everything made so that I'm always covered. The initial investment can be slightly costly, but you'll always have them then.

@groovydjs So, he replaced he sitch, checked everything with a volmeter, looked for connection, and soldering errors, and there were none. Still not working. @CCGuitarGod Your bass should not have anything on it that acts as an on/off switch at all. So, if it's doing that....they screwed up. lol Here's how to tell if it's right. Turn everything on 10 on your bass. Your 3 way toggle switch should act like any toggle switch, one or the other pickup by itself if it's up or down...both if in the middle. Phase switch will work when the bridge or both are on. Doesn't do anything w/neck pickup only, but will still give you 100% sound.

@gust0o They are very wrong. This thing burries a typical Grabber 1. If you want a Grabber sound, just grab a P-Bass or......a Grabber or any $100.00 Dean bass out there with a set of P pickups in it. This thing has total clarity and definition, 2 things that a Grabber couldn't get in it's best day. 2 VERY different basses. This one does weigh about 2X as much as a Grabber though. Put it this way, if you turned all the tone knobs off, had dead strings, it MIGHT sound like a Grabber.

@mikeymacaque Yeah, the Fury (both the P-bass version and the single slanted pickup version) and the Patriot basses are very much a one trick pony and sound pretty much identical. You had better love that one and only tone that they put out because that's all you'll get from either one. If you have everything on your amp set up for either one, you'll be fine and dandy, but, if you go from a T-40 to either of the others, you'l be doing a LOT of amp adjusting to try to get your tone back.

I used to have one of these. I still believe getting rid of it was the biggest mistake I ever made.

@groovydjs the only things that confuse me are the tone pots as splits and the phase switch, other then that its pretty daggone good.

The T stands for "tank" these basses will out last any bass! and I have the exact bass as you scott, 1981 white with rosewood fretboard, got it on ebay for $300, the beautiful thing is you can put stickers on it and not worry about it harming the value.

Advice from a happy T40 user to every fellow bassist : grab one (!), and use it in a tube amp. If you don't have the money or don't want the weight, buy a cheap 20watts full tube guitar amp, plug the t40 in with the desired amount of gain (gentle volume), plug the effect out from this guitar amp in your solid state bass combo or large speaker (200 watts mini), you'll almost get pro tube tones - enough for almost any band/situation when you know the T40 knobs and don't want to be a slap hero.

@WTNall Wow my friend, you made out very well both times! I bet you can cover some real ground with that 6 string for sure. You gotta love the T-40 for just being the solid, work horse that it is.

@groovydjs Massive!! So you know the only thing left out of your fantastic review is the fact that you need the Extra extra long scale strings for these bad mamajamas. I found out the hard way by snapping a string from a brand new set. I think I'm gonna take the plunge and get the white one here in town for 210 with the larger hard case, not the brown or black shaped one. A killer deal and too good to pass up.

@TheMAJofficial Very cool, and of course an easy fix, put them back where they go, the wires are still long enough I'm sure.

@CCGuitarGod That's too cool my friend. It sounds like a wire simply came off of the phase switch is all. So, you get to pull the strings off, take out those 20 some pickguard screws and look for the wire that came off. I would bet that's what it is. Yeah, you don't want that out of phase sound on. Isn't that goofy sounding? lol Let me know how it goes.
