I actually took a Fender "Nashville" Tele to Guitar Center and offered them to trade it straight up for a sunburst Peavey T-60 (exactly like yours except for the paint job). They grinned at me like they thought I was "special" and readily agreed. Suckers. I LOVE that guitar.

Shite, the T-15 with the ferrite pickup and shorter scale length is\was as better than every "student" guitar and better than many guitars of that time. Heck, it is better than most guitars now. A T-60 is definitely the guitar you need. No kidding, I haven't heard the death metal thing on one, but I've heard everything else and it is better than what your hero plays. I bet the death metal sound would be great. Plug into a MuffFuzz type effect and you can at least have stoner rock. I'll give you my LP & Strat for a players grade right now.

Congrats on a very informed and accurate review of the T-60. I've played strats and Les Pauls and always come back to my T-60 which was purchased new in '79. This model is a very well-built tank. After nuclear Armageddon there will remain only cockroaches, Keith Richards, and T-60's.

The fact that I can tell how excited you are about this thing is such a wonderful thing. I just picked up my second T60, a '79. These guitars are truly some of the best kept secrets around. I love everything about these Peavey guitars! You get a plethora of tones and you aren't limited... it sounds great. But what I love just as much is the detail. It doesn't really look like any other guitar for one, it's different, and so much detail from the "Peavey" on the bridge plate, the neck plate, the knobs. Just an awesome sight in addition to the great sounds. Great demo and thanks for bringing all of these guitars to our attention. Many of them I've never heard of or knew existed. And it really makes you think twice when going to purchase an Epi Les Paul or something... where you are limited. Anyways... thanks!

This was my first guitar when I was younger and got so much crap because it wasn't an expensive brand ( young and dumb ) so I traded it in. I went from guitar to guitar essentially looking for the sounds this bad boy made. Thank god for the internet found one excellent condition with case white and just f ing excellent. Can t believe how great these guitars are especially in comparison to those top name guitars. Glad to see someone else as Passionate about these as me!

Yeah, they are MAJOR musical instruments for sure. Some people are turned off by the necks, I love them. Some people hate the bigger body profile, but then.....they have HUGE, hollow body Gibson's and Gretch's around that are WAY BIGGER. lol Some people somehow feel ashamed to play a Peavey. I'm always more than happy to strap one on and put down whatever I may have had in my hands 2 seconds earlier. SUPERB AXES!

Had one I bought in April of 1979. He had four of these and was having trouble selling them. I remember that it cost $419 which was a lot of money for me at the time. The serial number was all zero’s and a 7. I still have the receipt with the numbers on it. It was stolen with all my equipment in November of 1980. With a new baby in the house no chance of getting another one for a while. I bought a Patriot in 1985 and found another T60 in 2002 and still have them both. I love these guitars!

@LoveThatTeleTwang That sounds right and if you're getting buzz still, then it might very well just be a high fret or two that need to be filed down. To they buzz all the way up the entire neck after that spot or just on those couple of frets?

Great review! I've had my T-60 for around five years. It's been painted black and the pick guard has been modified and some of the holes filled in. But the electronics are perfect and the guitar plays nicely. The previous owner also scraped the Peavey logo off the headstock.. I sent it to Chip Todd and he replaced the sticker with a slightly different one and he honored my request for his signature on the back. Awesome! I am thinking of a new guitar but this review has made me reconsider.

Thanks for the thorough review. Seems like an awesome guitar (thinking about picking one up in a trade). One thing I wanted to mention is that there is _one_ other guitar that has a similar tone option for splitting the coils: the HH Jaguar that Fender started putting out a few years back has little rollers above the hummies that do the same thing. Agree--it is total genius.

Is this really a 12 year old post... first, it's so helpful to walk away with appreciation of the diversity of the T-60, as shared with your enthusiasm. Makes me wonder what a follow-up video would be years later. Loving all of the individual posts and experiences. My 1st electric guitar as a Senior in HS - 83 was a T-60 in natural ash and maple neck (1978 1st year). I remember taking lessons playing with a band member from Lightening Harpo. Years later, I found a sunburst with rosewood neck (1981) in really nice shape, so I had no problems grabbing it.

@cellomannathan When two coils are activated together, the signals you normally want to hear (those produced by the guitar strings) are added together, but if you wire the pickups out of phase with one another, they cancel out all of the sound produced by each except for the differences between them (the difference in the sound between the two pickups). This subtraction/cancellation is why the volume drops when you have phase cancellation.

Thanks for the excellent review on a great guitar. I have a 78 natural finish model and the more I play it the better it gets. Great demo of a great guitar. I have 4 of them, a white '81, black '80, a '78 and an '83 in natural. I also have one of the first prototype bodies I bought from Chip Todd, the designer of the T-60, going to build a custom T-60 with it. Has binding which he installed personally and is stained walnut. T-60's tend to be heavy unless you get a painted one which were normally made of popular instead of ash.

Thanks for sharing, as a owner of 21 guitars including USA Strat, & Gibson Les Paul (which I love) I especially got a kick out of your comment about the T-60 being a better guitar, and that you said "you'll just go ahead and say it" It's been hard for me to admit it, but I couldn't agree more. After my discovery to this truth, I now own 3 T-60s. I have been playing for 30 years now and from my personal opinion I think it's the best guitar of all time. The ONLY thing I would personally change is the neck, I like a very fat neck. However I have learned to accept the neck based on all the other benefits.

@tmann202 Very cool! Easy enough answer on the coil splitting. As you are fading the tone from 10 to 7 where the humbucker is in FULL humbucking mode, you are actually not only just getting less high end on the single coil, you are adding the second coil in at the same time. So, that probably should've been mentioned, So, you can have a single coil on full volume and the 2nd coil on that same pickup on at half volume when the tone control is on about 8.5. Pretty groovy stuff.

Your conviction that Peavey is the best kept secret led me to purchase a Peavey Impcat 2 today. The cost was $249 which I thought was a deal especially when I saw the "Handcrafted in USA" written on the headstock. A fairly clean looking Kahler bridge is mounted, I dont see any place to thread in a trem bar. A quick google of Peavey Impact 2 didnt uncover much, just wondering when this model was made and any relevant info. Wow! I just noticed that the string tree on the headstock is a substantial looking triangle in chrome which looks to be farly beefy. Thanks

@tbalek1 The Peavey T-60 was conceived in 1976, the first one was made in late 1977 and was not sold to the public until 1978. It was Peave's first guitar. So, for one to exist in 1973 is quite impossible. But, I agree. There is nothing like them. They are a superb axe that should be worth what a Les Paul and Telecaster combined are worth. Why? Because they are every bit as good as both and they get both sounds and they simply Play better and are made better than both combined.

Hey Scott -- I aqree with everything. I worked in a guitar store for 10 years, and people thought I was nuts for touting T-60s, and all the T series -- but you really can't find a better guitar for the money. Taste is taste, and either you will like the way it sounds and plays or not (although, as you demonstrate, it can do it all). But the quality is impeccable, especially if you've torn apart enough other guitars to see how crappy many are. You nailed it by pointing out how much someone will pay for a sub-par, asian-made Epiphone, but turn their nose up at a T-60. Yeah, they weigh a lot, but how many people have heavy-assed Les Pauls from the 70s? I love the neck, too. "Fat" necks are all the rage, but when the T-60 came out, it was thin necks. People are very influenced by whatever is currently hyped. One thing that's cooler about the T-60 than standard Gibson wiring is this (I know you know this, but for some of your followers): The volume controls are absolutely independent, so turning down one all the way with the toggle in the middle doesn't turn the signal off. This allows a huge range of tones, especially when combined with the tone controls and the phase switch. In fact, in the out of phase position, turning down one volume alters the out of phase effect to get a stronger signal -- very strat like. The T-60 does what it does without a crapload of switches in a very intuitive, elegant way. Thanks for all the Peavey love. Unfortunately, I became convinced at the store that some people will never overcome a stigma Peavey doesn't deserve. People will "hear" the reputation through their prejudices rather than the instruments themselves. I'm also a big fan of Peavey amps (from the mid-eighties on) for what it's worth. What amp are you playing through in this video?
@groovydjs
9 жыл бұрын
I hear you Rick. Peavey should've did SOOOOO much better than they did. Sure, everybody had a cool Bandit or Renown amp at sime time. Those are great, dependable amps. I'm sure that most of them are working just perfectly today. I hear you about the fan base of guitars changing with whoever the "IN" player is that day. It's funny how many will hurt themselves trying to play a baseball bat instead of a nice, easy neck like the T-60. I'm currently playing through some old Johnson Millennium JM-150's. Groovy, all inclusive amps. They went away too because Line 6 came along and sucked really bad, but everybody loved their price more for putting out a very sub par product. Thanks for writing in! Always great to talk to another "T" series lover! Scott

You know, as soon as I hit the "enter" key I knew that was wrong. I got my T60 in 1978, not 1973. Serial number 226956. The music store in Missoula told me that each Peavey dealer got one, he called it a "market test". After all these years, I just had a good luthier rework the neck - new frets, planed and polished, took a few little dings out. It's like brand new now and I just love it. By the way, love your video, you have serious chops!

@HGrayMusic Yes, they only made the white finish for one year. The first part of the run was still using the old pickups, the ones yours has. Then Peavey changed the pickups for the remainder of the next decade to the kind mine has with the rails. So, yours was simply earlier in that one year of production so it has the old style pickups in them. They are much brighter sounding than the blade style pickups. So, that is the low down on them. The T-40 and T-60 before 1981 have your type.

There were several others that incorporated the same wiring etc. Such as the Horizion II (SUPERB AXE),The Razer and Mystic (wild looking things) and on and on, as far as the T series guitars go you had the T-15 which had a short scale and 2 super ferite pickups (great little bluesy guitar), the T-30 which has 3 single coils and is a short scale too. The T-25 is the same as the T-60 just half the weight, the T-26 has 3 single coils and T-27 singles and humbucker.

I almost bought one of these in 1980. I was very young and saved money for a real guitar to replace my cheap Strat copy. But I thought the neck was rather thin at first fret, and, what did I know (there was no internet, I lived in a small village), indeed my horror fantasy was the neck of my guitar breaking (one read a lot about that in those days) and my hard-earned money would be gone. But I never forgot the T60. Your review makes me kinda regret, especially given my love for out-of-phase..

VERY COOL! I always throw 9 gauge strings on every single electric guitar made. They are pretty much stock on most new guitars all over the world.

Awesome guitars! I learned to play on a T-60 going straight into a '79 Fender Princeton Reverb. Too bad that it was and still is my father's rig. :)

Hi Scott, thaks a lot for sharing all this awesome info! Have you ever seen a T-60 with three humbucking pickups? I've found one at a local store and I'm not sure if it's original or not. It's supposedly a '78 T-60 with 3 Pups and a 5 way switch. Thanks a lot my friend!!

I got an 81' T60 with a hard case and not a scratch on the guitar. It's not white though, its natural. It does a lot, and sounds good doing it. I also have a 25 watt Peavey Bravo tube amp from around 91' which gets a wide range of sounds too. Both made in U.S.A. all for right around $500. I added a custom made (greenback) Weber speaker and it really makes it all come together

Can you wire a Les Paul tone control like the tone control on that PV?

Any comments about a Predator? Think it's a 94. Thinking about buying one that has a seymour on the neck and a Dimarzio SD on bridge Has a switch between the tone and vol knob Thanks!

Love your vids. Have to ask though, does the single coil sound option make it sound like a tele or strat? I was looking at getting this but I already have a nice MIM Telecaster so I was looking for something with a different sound. And also, I heard the humbuckers can blow LP's stock pickups out of the water.

One other question - is there any play on the switches on your T-60? Mine just arrived (not in as great of condition as I had hoped - a couple of nicks w/bare wood showing but that's another matter) - white w/rosewood like yours, but it has the flat style switches instead of the bat ones (I like yours better), and I can wiggle them back and forth sideways, so they don't have a real 'solid' feel. The nuts holding them on the pickguard are tight.

Great video. I am about to buy that same guitar (white, rosewood) that I found on craigs, also in great condition. One question I have is about the coil splitting with the tone knobs. How does turning the tone knob to switch from single to humbuck make it more versatile than a push-pull switch on the knob? Doesn't that method give you full tone control adjustment range for each pickup in both single and humbuck mode, instead of partial tone control range with theT-60 method?

I bought mine NEW in 1973. I have tried every frickin' guitar ever made since then - every Gibson, Fender, PRS, etc - and I just can't part with my T60. Nothing like it. This is the end-all, be-all, rockin' American maple neck, ash body, humB and single coil MONSTER. T60 forever!

@KingofPho75 Sure, I have tons of them. It simply means that it was made int the 1980's. The Fender serial numbers and the year they were manufactured are that way on purpose. Serials beginning with "S" = Seventies, "E" = Eighties, "N" = Ninetys, "Z" = Zeros (for the 2000 decade). So, use the letter and the first number to determine the year the guitar was made. So an "E" series guitar from fender would be like E856381 would be made in 1988 and so on E being Eightys and 8 after = 88 (1988)

Thinking about taking some weight off my Peavey by trimming the top horn and it wide butt. Probably some Strat like contours sanded for comfort, good idea or bad? Thing is just to darn heavy but I love it

@pdorn777 My pleasure! You gotta love these things. The newest thing to come out is always tempting, but then you finally realize that you've got the only one that you really need sitting right there at home.

@zachgrantmusic Yep, they did the old style, toaster pickups in early 1981 and switched to the blade pickups in mid 1981. It will be 1981. The blade pickups will look pretty close to the toaster style with the exception of the blades going down the center of the black parts of the pickups. The toaster style of pickups are not nearly as bright sounding as the blade pickups, not as much definition. So, keep that in mind when you go to check it out too.

70's and 80's guys didn't had the resources we have today. Fuzz, wah, tube amp, a good guitar, a guitar tech modifiyng things (cooking tubes and bleeding guitar circuits) and that's it. Pedals existed, but not like today. Phase switch is a form to cut the mix without lots of volume. A staple technique back in the days. Treble boosters and compressors came later. I like this old style way to solve everything with the guitar knobs.
