After falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter, Stanford came back to defeat USC 35-31 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
With the win, the Stanford Cardinal remained unbeaten in Pac-10 play and improved their record to 6-2 (6-0).
The two teams combined for 1,034 yards of offense. USC quarterback Mike Van Raaphorst set a school record with 415 passing yards but was intercepted three times, including a 30-yard interception return by Chris Johnson and an interception by Tim Smith on the final play of the game. It was the second time in Smith's career he had sealed a Stanford win vs. USC with an interception on the final play of the game, having already done so in the Cardinal's 24-20 win over the Trojans in 1996.
