The 2024 Gibson Les Paul Modern Studio comes equipped with 490R and 498T pickups. The same pickups that come in a normal Les Paul Custom. But the two are not exactly the same. The Custom has hand wired pots and the Modern Studio has the modern PCB that allows for coil tapping, phase reversal and true bypass on the bridge pickup. But how does all of that functionality affect the tone? Or does it? Today, we find out.
I run these two through the Fender '68 Twin Reverb and use the Metal Zone pedal to add some gain to find out how much difference there is and whether it's worth it to get a Custom Shop built guitar that's about $1,000 USD more, used, than the new Modern Studio.
Which one would you choose? Let me know in the comments.
Enjoy!
