Thank you so much for this. I have severe neural foraminal stenosis. The worst is at C3-C4, and C5-C6 left neural foramen. I also have a herniated disc at C2-C3. The neck pain is often debilitating and radiates down into my left shoulder blade and then is more widespread across my upper back, left shoulder, and down my left arm into my hand. I've had 2 guided x-ray injections over 5 years, which has helped tremendously, but couldn't afford to do the PT they wanted me to do 3-4x a week in the office. Now I'm back in pain again from (I guess) a flare up or something. This video is now bookmarked on my computer and I'm doing these stretches daily. The difference in ROM was immediate. I can't thank you enough for graciously providing this - especially useful now during COVID-19 when we're under stay-at-home orders. My only question is, I have adequate pain relief during and immediately after these exercises, but it's very temporary. The pain comes back shortly after, and nothing will ease it except lying flat when I sleep. I often have difficulty simply holding my head up - the pain gets unbearable. Which is a real problem because I'm teleworking, on my laptop all day. If I'm diligent in doing these exercises every day, 3x a day, will the pain ever get better? Thank you so much.

You're welcome, and thanks for subscribing! It really just depends on how severe it is, but in general, yes, it can get better. You just have to be very consistent with your program even when feeling better. It can be frustrating because it may take awhile (several weeks, months) before really feeling long term relief, but if you stick with it, hopefully you will get there.

Dr. Jo, I have two questions. love your stretches but I'm wondering how strengthening helps? I'm 52 and have been dealing with neck and trap pain for six months. I stretch and ice almost everyday and it helps. Massages also help, temporarily. I'd get them every day if I could. This is getting old. I've never had an injury, it just came out of the blue. I've always worked out and run, but if I'm honest I avoid doing neck strengthening exercises because I'm afraid it'll irritate my neck. Second question, do you have patients that get "over the hump" and relieve their chronic symptoms? I have narrowing of c3 and c5 and my recent MRI revealed I don't need surgery and according to my spin Dr. and PT my MRI "honestly doesn't look that bad". I think the strengthening is what I need but I'm wondering how exactly it helps. I appreciate any advice. ;)
@kunjapurii
2 жыл бұрын
Hey!!! Neck strengthening is usually done by isometrics. I believe when we do isometrics, we are also practising a contract relax method of pain relief, so this neck strengthening exercise should instantly relax the muscles and help ease the pain as a short term relief and outcome. When you continue with your neck strengthening program for few sessions, the strengthened muscles will off load the pain of painful soft tissues and fibres, the strengthened muscles will allow healing of painful soft tissue ( by offloading,by removing pain substances too).
