Just look at some of the people that live thru the attack. 2 guys in Russia about 1 Mo ago got kill and ate by Russian Brown Bear that was killed later 10.5 feet long 1500 lbs. The Ruger is the better deal. It costs hundreds less than the Smith and Wesson, it's more versatile, it weighs less, it holds an additional round; and for all practical purposes, it shoots an equally effective round. The .454 Casull will take any animal the .500 S&W can.

The most powerful caliber that my local indoor range allows is the .44mag. Anything more powerful could potentially penetrate the backstop (so I was told during my Range Officer training). It is not fun to be in there when someone is shooting a .44mag...or heck, even a short barreled .357mag. I only shoot .45 colt out of my .460 indoors...it's more fun to shoot .460S&W outdoors anyway - fun knowing that I can reliably hit a 2-liter 75 yards out with it!

When I fired my once-owned "Lucifer's Hammer", the .50 AE, it took awhile for the second shot because my right arm went instantly vertical. So, after awhile I decided that if I ever missed that first shot, I could not guarantee how soon I could shoot again because of the recoil. And I had more than 4 inches of barrel on that single action, and it was ported. Ultimately, I doubted that I could tame that recoil, so I traded it.

I live in Kodiak Brown Bear territory and yes, bear mace can be effective in certain situations...it's often recommended to have both a firearm and the bear mace when hiking around here (yes, even neighborhoods). The mace falls short when it's windy (you may end up incapacitating yourself quite badly if the wind blows it your way), and also if the bear is dead set on making you its prey. I'd rather not take my chances (especially after being charged by a bear), so now I carry my .460 or a 12ga.

I own, shoot, and hunt with a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454casull(7in barrel). A friend of mine had a S&W .460. I had eye and hearing protection on. He let me shoot his gun. It was about the same with approx. 7in barrel. He put two rounds in the gun(They looked like rifle rounds). I shot the first round and handed him the gun back. He told me there was another round in the gun and shoot it as well. I told him no thanks. I guess there comes a point in which enough is enough. In the case of his gun it was too much. The recoil was expected but the percussion on my face was to the point at which my checks became instantly numb. I want to have fun and enjoy myself. I also got an instant headache. I like the Ruger frame due to the weight and management of recoil. I never felt so much pain and instant headache when shooting the .454casull. I am glad I saw the video on the .500. I guess for some it is fun but for me just confirmed I know what my limits are and if I want something any bigger it will be a long gun. Peace, Reese

Having hunted and killed grizzly bears over the last 20 years, NO HANDGUN is big enough. Not even my .338 Win Mag can ensure a one shot stop. Note, I say stop, not kill. A bear can take a long time to die even with a direct heart shot. The only way to ensure stopping a bear is to hit the central nervous system, not something easily done under stress.

You're right - hunters using large rifle calibers have had issues stopping bears in their tracks. With that said, it's not always feasible/desirable for me to go out for a hike (or even a walk in my neighborhood) with my .30-06 or my .375H&H rifles (or my 12ga or .45-70 lever action). I prefer to have 'something' (other than mace) even if the chance of a stopping a bear is slim...I've found that .44mag and .460S&W are the largest pistol calibers I can handle under stress and still hit my target.

Sauce, I don't know who you've been listening to, but a .44 mag is NOT going to handle these largest animals all the time. Sure, you can find people who were successful. But I have met too many people with sub-500 handguns with stories that should not give you the confidence you should have. One (professional firearm instructor) successfully killed a charging grizzly bear coming at him...with the very last round after emptying his gun. Sure, it worked. But he was well shaken. You're simply wrong.
