I wanted to thank you guys. I’m a 52 year old disabled veteran. I spent many years very little after being told not to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. I’m in week 3 of phase 1 of anabolic and pulled 225 for 4 reps today. Considering I’m only 165 now after dropping 75 lbs 3 years ago and never lifted before I’m pretty happy with that. I’ve learned so much from you guys. Thanks again.

what matters is how close to failure we train, not the number of repetitions. The main reason people often see an improvement from low reps to high reps is that with higher reps and lower weight their form improves and there is no ego lift.

I think it's really important to define the meaning of "light weight." A weight you can lift for 12 reps is very different from one you can lift 30. Sometimes it might be hard to know which to use. I really like the lighter weights (like 12 reps) for isolation as well as being explosive with a slow negative.

For instance, I can do slower tempo, perfect form, repetitions with lighter weight that would allow me to approach failure at 20 reps OR I could do the same lift and fail at 12 to 15 reps. The easy way to think about it is to "flex" while lifting. Some of the issue involves ego.

I needed a change and I luckily found this channel, I recently went back to lifting 15-20 reps per set, but I am now focusing on the mind muscle connection but most important, the form, keeping proper form and slowing down my reps to keep that form and mind/muscle connection. This ultimately led me to make my own research and that's how I discovered your channel! After seeing your videos discussing GVT, I was convinced and decided to give it a go. Your channel convinced me to work with a trainer for the first time and to go out of my comfort zone with GVT; 10x10 squats with 4-0-2-0 tempo was a very humbling workout. I'd also love to see a video focused on injury and identifying on strain/injury. I am 34 now and although still young not 18-23 when your body is very forgiving. I used to lift somewhat heavy chest like 3-5 years ago and I'm just getting back into it. I would normally hit bench 135 15-20 rep warm up, 185x 12 and then I'd usually hit 225 6-10x for 3 sets. Occasionally I'd go right into 225lb for higher reps like 14, 10, 8 or and then occasionally lift heavier for myself around 250 x 4 275 x 2-3. My personal max was only 325 barley and I rarely ever tried over 300lbs. However this time around I'm getting back into lifting again after years off and although it feels like my strength is rebounding somewhat quickly in just 1 month. I couldn't even do 155lb for more than 10 reps. I'm now getting closer to 185lb for like 4-6 reps However I have been having shoulder pain and it's numb in the morning and in certain exercises like fly's I literally can't even do 30lb without strain. I'm also limited in other movements. In the morning it is numb and I addressed this with my Dr. and he said we'll wait 4-6 months until your next appointment to see a specialist if it's still giving you a problem. Is there anything I can do like shoulder straps (the kind heavier lifters will wear when going heavier) to keep it tight. Any recommendations around injury/injury prevention/ recognizing signs?

Something interesting I've noticed about high reps is that if I train light, everything feels light, but if I train heavy, everything feels heavy. I'm guessing that's because of improved strength endurance, which has a lot more value than power in everyday situations. I found out the hard way that doing 5x5 doesn't help you do yard work.

Such a great topic! I think most men get on an ego trip, where they think that light weight is not manly enough. It doesn’t help that lifting light with high reps takes longer, but in the end, the proof is in the pudding.

Great look into this. I feel like I'm the only trainer talking about this. As an added point I think you overlooked, I would add this. A major factor of hypertrophy is going to failure. With lighter weights you can actually get closer to failure. If you're only lifting 6-8 reps, once you "fail" on that 6th rep, we all know you can immediately pick up a lighter weight and crank out more reps. So did you ever really get to failure with that 6-8 rep range? I would argue no.

Great points across the board, and I can personally speak to the advantage with laterals. Once I went lighter on them I felt it much more in the delts. Also a big fan of slowing them down with a 5 second count, or a pause halfway up. Burns SO good.

This is a great topic because everyone does think high reps are for toning and low reps for building muscle. I have done workouts with high reps but not 14+ reps for a core lift. This would be challenging and fun to implement to my training. Wonder how my body would react.

You guys are awesome! I can’t get enough of the great information you provide. Listen pretty much all day at work trying to catch up lol. I’m almost all the way back to episode 1500.

The best podcast and this is the BEST giveaway! If I win this, not only can I give the Maps Anywhere to my 14 year old as a beginner program, but Adam won’t be able to yell at me… no matter WHERE I am 😂 Keep up the great work gents!!!
