Most people of colour would rather have their own story told, their own character and this as we should remember is a real woman who really lived and died at the sword. I really liked how they included diverse characters in 18th-century London of "Harlots", even though it's a fictional story: they were fully fleshed-out and interesting characters with different story arcs, not tokens, while at the same time a lot of what happened to them and the attitudes of some other characters were informed by historical realism (ie. when, say, a black woman was being fetishised, it was clear that she was being fetishised by the brothel punters within the series, not by the series' creators; the audience is made aware of the fetishisation rather than invited to participate in it - and the character has the agency to use it for her own benefit. @bribripot It is not dismissing an actor. I still say that MDK was a great actress and in my top 3 of all KoA actresses. But she for example does not look the part. And it would be okay if it was a fictional character since they are pretty flexiable in appearance. Real historical figures however looked a certain way and when you start always hiring actresses that look nothing like them to play it (especially in Katherine of Aragon's case it is caused by the Spanish stereotypes when it comes to looks which is like so wrong to try to put a figure into a certain stereotype) some people actually start thinking that is what the actual people looked like. And that is very unsettling to see to be honest. To see people thinking Howard had blonde hair or Anne Boleyn had green eyes. So I like actors and actresses that look like the actual person for the role more. Same goes for the Channel 5 series Jodie Turner Smith while being a pretty good actress looks nothing like the real life Anne Boleyn and compared to the 6'2 real life Henry, Mark Stanley does not create the same effect on me despite him playing his role.

I would much rather see a series about any one of the many real Black historical figures who lived in Tudor England who were not enslaved. It's a part of history that never gets the center stage, to the point where a lot of people don't even know that such people even existed. There were Black soldiers who came to England as part of the Roman conquest because the Roman empire was linked to and overlapped with Africa for centuries. They were only the beginning of a Black presence in England. A lot of those stories don't have a ton of documentation, so it would leave a lot of room for creative storytelling that is rooted in a very real past. The BBC should tell those stories instead of creating yet another series about the torrid love affairs of Tudor monarchs. When they do make stories about these same old figures who we know so well, they would do well to take your advice and focus on other parts of their lives. The Tudors did much more with their existence than have sex and get their heads chopped off.

My hang up is like... ethnicity, nationality, and sex carry context. They're implying they don't, that there was no issue with 'blackamoores' in Britain... and also that Elizabeth was cool with letting a merchant have some of her black subjects as a reward despite being half-black. But at the same time, if ethnicity isn't a factor in the story, and we view that story in isolation, could full colourblind casting work? I'm ambivalent on this one. Calling bullshit on the slap though.

I have yet to comment on one of your videos, but this one makes me want to. I actually expect this from you, because, as you said you're the type to get upset over Katherine having blonde hair. Clearly, accuracy and authenticity are important to you. That is perfectly fine. But I have seen people comment about the casting who don't care about the accuracy and clearly jump at any chance to get upset about including black people. I like the idea of casting a black woman if they give that change meaning. Making her non-white does nothing to change the story, so it's hollow. If this had been an alternate history reimagining of the events they could have used the casting to great effect. Or, someone could actually make projects about black women and men who lived during this time period. This actually feels like they're throwing scraps to black people rather than creating something original with great representation.

I do plan to watch it anyway but I see your point. I know Phiippa Gregory takes liberties in her novels but she wrote one from the POV of a Jewish girl during the reign of Mary I, a story like that from the perspective of any religious or racial minority would be interesting to see in the screen

I think this is well said. I feel it is also possible to have it both ways. There are other events that touch on very similar human experiences that happened to historical black women. So if the point was to showcase a powerful and moving performance by a black actor in a historical setting, why not do something from black history, maybe from a similar period even. This has the added bonus of also not retreading a story told so many times in what seem like a gimmicky move that, as the LC points out is prob more to make headlines and thus money, than to genuinely put a black actress in the forefront. There is so much of black history, especially non African American black history, that is untouched by pop culture. I have little doubt there are great stories out there waiting to be told.

Towards the end of the series I just ended up getting confused. Funny enough the white queen was probably the first time I got introduced to the war of the roses and that time period. If a white woman played Harriet Tubman in a series, there’d be protests in streets and the media would be talking nonstop about it. But a black woman can play Anne Boleyn and it’s fine? Equality goes both ways. This is ridiculous and honestly an insult. I’m sure the actress is great. But she’s not the right fit to portray this historical character. I don’t blame her. Just the people behind the series.

Reality has no place in a period drama. EVERYBODY knows that. Historical period dramas are meant to be edgy and reflect the current social concerns that are in fashion at the moment. Seriously, have we learned nothing form Reign? Accuracy, authenticity - Bah! That isn't important - bold new reimagining is what matters. So with that in mind, I will be started my script for my own Tudor drama. set in the present day, it's about an Hispanic Princess, Catherine Aragon (Cathy), that flees Spain to escape her parents goat cheese farm and look for the British Dream in London. (Or possibly she is from Mexico... and is an undocumented immigrant not sure which is more compelling) After risking so much to get to English soil she is delighted when she meets charming dream boats Prince Henry and his little brother Artie Tudor. (In this version of the story Henry is the big Bro.) There is a bit of a love triangle but then Artie dies tragically from a vaping some bad stuff he got from some shady chick, Bessie. Henry and Cathy bond in their grief and get married, all is well until Cathy's sexy French speaking bestie, Anne, decides she wants Cathy's man. An epic struggle for Harry ensues and Anne prevails, and gets Henry. However, through all the struggle and pain Cathy learns she doesn't need no man to complete her and starts to concentrate on her own dreams and raising her daughter Mary as a single mom. She opens a bakery and finds empowerment by creating divorce cakes to wealthy professional women. She gains fame and fortune while Anne gets dumped for another woman, Janie a younger prettier girl that Henry meets while he is away on a business meeting. Anne goes to Cathy to apologize for all she put her through. Cathy being such an awesome person hires Anne to do her marketing and it ends on a girl power feel good note of all the gals dancing and icing a cake. I am going to call it the Hispanic Princess. Whadda think?

Funny story, before the pandemic, I found one of them on DVD (think it was the first Two Seasons of the one that doesn't have Jeremy Irons in it, think its just called Borgia) for a mere £2 in a charity shop! I have been contemplating doing a spinoff series looking at Renaissance era dramas (i.e. not Tudors, so stuff like the Borgias, Hapsburgs, Valois etc.) but that will be for years in the future I am afraid.

i really dont understand why they would NOT cast Anne accurately- like Anne Boleyn was a real woman. There are MANY black people who existed in the Tudor period? That's simply just taking away from their real stories, in my opinion. It's not like Anne is a forgotten figure either, who doesn't have much description either. ALSO, why the hell are the costumes so bland?? Like, the silhouette is great but they're so.... boring?? (edit: spacing)

By “trailblazer” they’re talking about Anne’s role in the reformation, convincing the king by showing him a passage from a book by Tyndall( I know I butchered his name, whoopsie.) Stating that “no one (not even a pope since he was merely elected and a mere mortal who uses and abuses the churches power) is is above the king, for he is/has been anointed by God himself! I’m paraphrasing but basically saying “No-one but god himself tells him to do, and he believes at that point that he is an “Absolute King” and has the right to do what ever he wanted with no consequences, and will have no one dare think they’re above him. That passage earned Henry’s response “This is a book for me, and ALL other Kings”, according to the contemporary sources the book was “heretical” in England in which the penalty is to be burned alive. So, she was a big “trail blazer” figuratively in that sense. Just wanted to translate stupid for you 😂. I’m actually totally furious (don’t be stupid and play the race card jk🤪) She earned her place in history and we owe it to people who made an impact in the world and she did in both good and bad senses ( First Queen of England to be executed). I’ve studied the Tudors and Anne Boleyn for years, to the point I’m not going anything new lol, Truth is I was super excited to see how they portrayed “her version, thoughts, and IMO 😇 innocence. I wouldn’t care if it was based on someone who’s wasn’t a real person. 🤯. RIP Queen Anne Boleyn 💖. “She may have been rude, mean, and Manipulative at times,But that was the girl, woman, personality. But, theres positive to the Queen, the intellectual, moral when it came to her conscience, being a good mother to Elizabeth, help Henry with forming the reformation.

Yeah, I was definitely out after I saw that stupid kiss between Anne and Jane . They could not have been more clear that they're basically just trying to get attention by causing controversy for the show. It's sad too since I think Jodie Turner-Smith is a good actress and deserves to be in something better. Also, maybe instead of putting black people in white roles for performative representation, we could maybe start actually trying to tell the stories of black people in history? (And not just another slave story) I think my issue with the "Black Viking" trope is that it is clearly media pretending to care about black representation while staying in their comfortable American-Eurocentric view of history. Instead of telling the story of H8 (badly) again, we could actually make a film or show about African history, or explore what it actually would have been like to be a black person in Europe during these times. There are so many incredibly diverse and rich cultures and events in African History to write stories about and it's really sad they're never explored on screen. And about the show, a psychological thriller version of the story is an interesting idea. Exploring Anne's actual thought process and growing fear at her inevitable fate and really showing Henry in a light that focuses on his volatile treatment of his wives and children and how they try to navigate through that instead of just the fact that he got married a lot would be a cool idea and new take. But if that kiss is somehow supposed to be part of some mind tactic on Anne's part according to the showrunners, I don't think they really understand how to do a psychological thriller.

hello again from Puerto rico laughing cavalier. Was SUPER waiting for your rant on this trailer! Like you said: the tudor stories have been told more times the matches in a 12 box pack. As a love for european history there is so much to be told on other english figures like maybe alfred the great or empress matilda and i feel like theirs stories are always either never mentioned or put aside. As for having black people being portrayed as historic figures.......why not talk about REAL black kings and queens which africa, egypt and other middle eastern kingdoms have had over the years.......instead we are once again revisiting an overacted or talked about period that has been over told SO MANY TIMES its saying that we have no creativity whatsoever.Casting jodie turner as anne boleyn has me thinking that any moment they will cast vin diesel to play malcom x or wayne johnson to play martin lurther king.......thats just no.....And by the way as i have said before: when Gods of egypt was being released it had a HUGE uproar of having white lead actors instead of either middle eastern or black actors. I myself wasn't pleased with the choices so i didn't watch it. But doing the same thing the other way around and its fine???

There's all sorts of agendas going on with modern trends in UK production. I listened to a trio of guests discussing historical productions on the History Extra podcast who advocated strongly against your position on this issue. They also concluded that historical accuracy isn't the most important feature to 'story telling'. My question is, if historical accuracy isn't important - why make an historical drama at all? This is cultural appropriation - applied inconsistently. Where does it end? Is it okay for men to be cast as women from history? Should a Chinese actor be expected to pass off as Adolf Hitler or can we expect to see child actors playing the elderly or shall we return to middle aged actors playing school children? Will I be expecting to swallow a future Ralph Fines portrayal of Idi Amin? In the series M.A.S.H. any old American Asian actor was cast as Korean and white actors would Red-Face to portray Native Americans in old westerns. Here was me thinking we were getting better and more accurate with out historical portrayals - or is it just my futile expectations?

Thinking about it, I can see why Costume Designers dressed Ann Boleyn in a plain Dress rather than the extravagant Furs and Jewels the Queen would normally wear. And if I’m right, the Producers MUST have realized the mistake in Casting too but went ahead with the Series anyways. I think they had to simplify Ann’s Costume to avoid accusations of “Perpetuating Black/African Queen Stereotypes” by dressing up a Black Actress in Animal Fur and Jewels. If you’ve even been on Twitter, you can see how plausible this theory is! 🤷♂️

if it was wrong to have white men and women playing American Indians, Asians and Black people on film then why is it OK to cast a black woman to play Anne Boleyn? I might argue that it could prove the point that casting the correct race to play characters doesn't matter, so why not cast Saoirse Ronan to play Angelia Davis? Changing the race of people to play characters in fantasy roles for the most part might not matter, but in historical portrayals it was wrong in the past and is wrong now.
