Quick Note: There are a few things I am not too happy about with the rant video: - That I actually end up going over a few things again (like the Groundhog Day structure ironically enough!) - I missed out a few things (for example, I cut out some bits about Wilde's portrayal since I felt I could not articulate myself on that part properly) - The last 2 sections are really short since I ended up covering a lot of it in the 'characters vs story'. I have to a bit kinder to it since £11 million is a tiny budget with which to make a Titanic drama - I was over a week late with this one since I wanted to get it done for the anniversary, but it took a lot longer to make this one than I had planned for There was so many fictional characters in this though that I had to cover them, which took up a lot of time sadly. I might have to split the 'characters vs story' section into 2 for the next Titanic Rant (fictional characters and historical characters perhaps), but we will see.

What people tend to forget is the Titanic was part of the Royal Naval Reserve, meaning that the crew operated under maritime naval regulations, they were the equivalent to a crew operating during peacetime and the ship could be requisitioned for military use if war broke out. Which is what happened to the Olympic and the Britannic. So if Charles Lightoller had done half the shit he does in this mini series then he would have been brought up on serious charges for dereliction of duty, lost his commission and likely would have never served at sea again.

A Night to Remember & Cameron's Titanic do the collision scene in two different contexts. In A Night To Remember, we're seeing it through the perspective of the passengers and crew. The collision isn't a huge moment because most of the passengers did not feel it, and many didn't believe the ship could sink until it was too late. In Cameron's Titanic, because it's told in flashback, you know what's going to happen to the ship. You know the iceberg is coming and the big rush to avoid it is a huge blow of dramatic irony. As it nears the iceberg, you're kind of hoping it doesn't hit. Imagine a footballer shooting for the net, but hitting the goalpoast instead. 2012 on the other hand?: "Oh yeah, we'd better include this, or people will wonder why it's sinking, derp"

You summed up the differences in handling the Titanic disaster by three different creative teams PERFECTLY. Your analysis is a perfect example of how historical filmmaking doesn't have to be boring or lazily done (even though historical dramas have innate spoilers). It just depends on who is involved. Fellowes didn't put a lot of effort into this I feel because he was just riding high on Downton's fumes and this Titanic movie was just another notch on his post.

Another inaccuracy with Ismay this dramatization has (along with most others) is portraying him as a cocky and smug socialite, while in reality he was a quiet and introverted man who seldom interacted with other passengers and even had his own private table in the dining room.

Chief officer Henry Wilde don't get enough credit for his part that night.. Two years before the sinking, he had lost his wife, leaving him to raise his three children alone. Following the sinking, his death left his children orphaned. Yet, he didn't try to save himself. He died saving as many as he could, despite having kids back home who would be without parents. I honestly think Wilde is one of the more underrated heroes of the Titanic. And it remains unclear to this day how he died. Some say he was sucked down by the ship when it went under. Others say he froze to death. And some even say he was crushed under one of the collapsing smoke funnels.

You know I know the James Cameron film isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but at least that one had a level of respect for the real people who lived and died that night. And personally, I don’t know if I would have been as interested in learning more about the ship had I not fallen in love with the movie when I first saw it quite young. You can argue the romantic parts are cliche/cheesy but what makes the Cameron film powerful for me is the portrayal of the sinking and its aftermath. (Nearer My God To Thee brings me to tears without fail, every time) The fact that this one was filmed for the 100th anniversary says everything about what it was- a cash grab.

You know what really angers me and makes the titanic 2012 series the worst in my eyes (minus the Nazis Titanic film) is not the poor made up characters, or the fact it is downtown Abby on a ship or even the poor covering of the sinking, no what really annoys me about this series is how they turned real people into mockery's of their real life selves, desecrated the honour of some of them and then helped pushed the angle that Ismay was a coward when in reality he was shoving people into lifeboats to get them away so much in fact that officers had to pull him back as he was over filling boats. They also used the real life characters to help push their quite frankly garbage characters "personality's". You can tell that the writers wanted to push certain angles over others even if truth and facts must be scuttled to make that happen. You can tell they wanted to just make their own TV version of Titanic 1997. Half surprised they did not have a class riot as well where the poor rise up to overthrow the evil first class keeping them down under as the Titanic sunk. By the way the Titanic could turn very well and fast in real life unlike how the show and movie 1997 tried to show she could not due to a to small a rudder, this has been disproved today Titanic's rudder was big enough to turn on quite well in emergency they just did not have enough distance to turn fully away but they nearly did.

Cally the Ist The burning of the Hand’s Tower after the deaths of Tywin & Shae was interesting in the novel, because it was something that showed just _how_ far apart Cersei & Jaime had grown- & her fascination with the wildfire was something he was deeply concerned by... in the show; he returns to a city with an effing CRATER where the religious heart of the capitol, & the larger majority of the country’s population was- & he does & says... nothing... I don’t care how much showJaime loves showCersei, that was absurdly unrealistic - it made NO sense. Dumbass & Dipsh*t ignored the politics & supernatural/ magical elements, except for where they had almost no choice- despite those being MAJOR features of the story; the interplay of them with the heart of the characters: things like honour, the impact of their choices on the lives of family, friends & even ordinary people, & how the main players balanced politics, & understood the supernatural... & yet we get next to none of that- instead of for example; Jon’s journey from a moody & slightly bitter noble bastard into a capable & pragmatic leader, who- though he never asks for leadership, he *does* step up to the responsibilities & is willing to sacrifice personal desires, for the greater good - we got: a moody & slightly bitter noble bastard who, while a capable & sometimes pragmatic leader, is only sometimes willing to step up to leadership & at other times looks like he wants to run away from responsibility, in order not to face things he doesn’t want to address- makes some decisions that do not make sense in context, & can sacrifice some personal desires, for the greater good- but is wilfully blind to a situation that is going from bad to worse- though *he* has the ability to change things. With Sansa; we saw in the books a naive, somewhat spoiled, & idealistic child with romanticised notions of the world lose *everything* - & slowly claw back a life for herself, & grow in maturity, wisdom & pragmatism as she does- she utilises her gifts & abilities to safeguard herself- she loses her naivety & grows her political understanding, & is capable of balancing practicality & without losing her soul- she keeps her sense of compassion, but learns when & where to hold herself back - showSansa fits the first half of the description, but her practicality appears overwhelmed by more cynicism than compassion- & I get the impression showSansa now thinks of it as weakness... if D&D had not kept belting her with the victim-status stick, I suspect this would not have happened (so much for her being ‘a favourite character’... I rather think they got off on all the ‘faces’ they saw, & wanted more of the same, so it was easier to ignore the actual journeys the characters were meant to take in the story) - I had no problem with her eventually becoming Queen, but the context & trajectory felt very off. With Dany; instead of a young woman who is struggling with the enormity of her heritage & the leadership responsibilities she has gained over time, trying to balance dreams & desires- with a sometimes less-than-ideal reality, & conflicting advice with her own feelings & instincts- & her gradually leaning toward absolutes of her own sense of ‘destiny’ & *her* understanding of power, we get weakly motivated flip-flopping, & a lack of balance in how, when, & why she does & doesn’t listen to those around her- the show could have benefited from some internal thought projections for her, I think. I’m not even going to get into the whole Dorne-thing, Arya, Tyrion & Bran- except to say two things; 1) they allowed the popularity of the actors, to take over the story, & thus weakening & eventually ruining the characters & 2) they **ruined** my *favourite* tertiary character: Brynden motherf*cking Rivers- aka Bloodraven; show-only watchers wouldn’t have the faintest clue of just how incredibly interesting he really is; the guy’s an amazing combination of Jon, Jaime, Tywin, Tyrion & Varys (paralleling in some interesting ways) - & his accomplishments impact deeply on the current generation, whether they recognise it or not. He’s technically not even the same character in the show (only ‘the Three-Eyed Raven’), which infuriated me no end- I mean, it was an utter waste of a perfectly good Max Von Sydow, to not give him Bloodraven’s epic ‘ghosts’ speech, as a way of introducing him- & then killing him off as soon as was practical... because **you short-changed a character by cutting him out of the story for AN ENTIRE SEASON** Ok, sorry- I wasn’t intending to rant like that.

Hats: I am not an expert in fashion, but I believe that the huge Edwardian hats you seen in many Titanic movies were NOT worn indoors. Those big hats were known as street hats. Women wore much smaller hats indoors (incuding in dining saloons, lounges, reading rooms etc). This was the same mistake as was made in "A NIght to Remember", driving Violet Jessop crazy and making her regret having declined the offer to consult on the movie. Again, I am not an expert, so what I have written above needs to be double-checked with a real expert on Edwardian fashion.

Concerning the “Binocular incident”, any time someone wants to argue the point that I will ask if they’ve ever hunted game with a rifle and scope, and if they haven’t then I ask if they’ve ever used those coin operated giant binocular things they have at scenic landmarks and such….usually they say yes to one of the two and then you can hit them with the clincher….ask them if they pick what to look at by scanning the area around them with their naked eye, or if they just hold their eye to the scope and start looking around for whatever game they’re hunting one tiny, ultra-magnified bit at a time. Of course nobody hunts that way…if you’re looking for something you think may be around you and you don’t know it’s location already, you’ll always want the broadest field of vision possible until you spot what you’re looking for, at which point you can use magnification for a better view (in some cases….near total darkness not being an ideal one. People who believe the binoculars would have saved the ship are taking the word of a scared, traumatized man trying to cast as much blame off himself as possible. That’s literally how the whole thing got started.

I did kind of like the way they portrayed Ismay in the 2012 series simply because they went the opposite direction of almost every other Titanic drama and didn’t have him pushing for more speed, but actually had him advising them to move ahead cautiously as time wasn’t really an issue. They visited St Petersburg when making it and based the interiors of the palaces off of the real life stuff, hell the drawing she shows in one scene to the Dowager Empress was a real drawing irl Anastasia made. Of course, from a historical point of view it makes no sense (particularly since the real life Rasputin was very loyal to the Romanovs, and weird changes with dates, like Anastasia being 8 in 1916 when she was actually 15 and the Revolution happening a year early, and being caused by... magic I guess?!) but I don't think you can hold a children's film, based off of what was basically a legend at the time (since they had not yet found the remains of two of the Tsars children when it was made) which was based off of the film from the 50's to the same standard as a big budget drama that openly claimed it was going to 'set the historical record straight' like what Fellowes did with this. I mean, if I did a rant video, then I would probably at least be harsh in the 'story vs history' section, but the other two I would be fairly positive I think. I don't think, unlike some films, Anastasia lies to people about history since there is barely any historical events in it save for the start of the film, compared to something like the Titanic animated one, but that is a story for another time I think!

@@The_Laughing_Cavalier I like the animated Anastasia on its own terms, for the animation and the music. You might enjoy the stage version more, since it removes all the mysticism/magic and makes it more of a straight-up historical drama. In this version, the antagonist is a Bolshevik officer sworn to kill any Romanovs he finds living, and who was actually there on the night of the botched execution (his father was one of the executioners). It's actually quite powerfully done. The show tweaks some of the historical details to bring it more in line with the real story, and is far more accurate (well, at least as accurate as a story about a surviving Anastasia could be). I'd also recommend the novel I Was Anastasia by Ariel Lawhon.

I really enjoyed this “rant”, Laughing Cavalier, since I wasn’t sure how my opinion of this miniseries ranked with anyone else’s. I had such high hopes for this series mainly because I had enjoyed “Downton Abbey” so much. I figured anything that Julian Fellowes touched would certainly be gold. Wrong!! One of the only redeeming factors is that actress Dorothy Gibson is portrayed in the production. To my knowledge (and I’ve seen just about every TV show or movie to do with the Titanic) she had never been portrayed before. Footnote... she went on to make a movie based on her experiences called “Saved from the Titanic” in May 1912. She even wore the same dress in the movie that she wore the night of the sinking. However, that’s where the accolades end. That alleged “love story” between the 3rd class wife and the guy who looked like Rasputin was beyond weird. And her acting (if one could call it that) was just - well - amateurish at best. I always say that there is no perfect Titanic movie or series. Even “A Night to Remember” (1958) which, for my money, remains the best of them, is not without fault. Cameron’s “Titanic” (1997) was full of nice historical detail but the over-the-top love story detracted rather than added to it. And, unfortunately, there are too many people who believe that Jack and Rose were actual people. 🤦♀️ Perhaps, someday there will be a more “perfect” Titanic movie. If there is, I’ll be happy to sing its praises - but “Titanic” (2012) sadly isn’t the one.

I've had some personal eerie links to the Titanic which I initially began to become aware of after Reading "A Night To Remember" as a child back in the late 1950's. These included later finding out that there was a Crew Member with my own Surname (Mueller) who had a the job of "Steward/Translator" which was significant to me , because I had the same job with Qantas Airlines that he had on the Titanic. This could still be seen as mere coincidence, but it became eerie when Qantas chose to allocate a retirement date for my 40 year career with them EXACTLY at the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic's First & Last Voyage. My final flight as a Flight Attendant/Translator ended on the EXACT day that the Titanic STARTED it's Maiden Voyage 100 years earlier! There are many other "coincidences" which I won't mention now because I want to get to the REAL point I feel compelled to raise.... Many people see it as an "eerie coincidence" that the Titanic sank on her maiden Voyage when some people were openly boasting that "God himself could not sink her". I put it to you that any humans who openly challenge God with prideful statements like that risk having God accepting the challenge! Which is why I was saddened to hear the "Laughing Cavalier" carelessly using Christ's name in Vain (at 44minutes & 20 second into the video). You may think this is insignificant, but God's attitude has always been the same, and certainly hasn't changed in the last 100 years. So much so that 3rd of the 10 Commandments (Which HE gave us, not as SUGGESTIONS, but Commands to us!) states "You must not use God's Name in vain". Yes, it's true that we are free to chose our own ways & our own words. But, unfortunately, we are NOT free to choose the CONSEQUENCES of our choices. They DO come back to haunt us.....

Very entertaining and spot-on summation, Laughing Cavalier. I was so looking forward to this Titanic miniseries back in 2012. I mean… what could go wrong? Julian Fellowes retelling the story of the Titanic. It should have been a match made in heaven but - alas, no. I, too, have never understood the alleged relationship between Peter (who resembles Rasputin more than anyone else) and Mary. There was no buildup or backstory as to why this “romance” even happened and her acting (if one could even call it that) consisted of a lot of staring and never looking at Rasputin when he was around. Very odd. The only thing I give this miniseries a few points for is its inclusion of Dorothy Gibson, the actress. To my knowledge, this is the only production to have done so.

Well, I finished watching all four of the episodes, before they'll doubtlessly be taken down. The only part that made me feel sad is the scene in the fourth episode, where Titanic herself sinks, which is sad because not only is it the death of Titanic herself, but also because 1,496 would die with her. I cared not for any of the fictional characters. I found myself laughing a few times, at scenes that weren't intended to be funny. And, of course, there are the inaccuracies. But, Dr. Paul Lee already went over them, so I'm not going to rant about them.

- One of the reasons why I think the set up could have worked would be because they would have never interacted. Meaning there would have been little opportunity to repeat the same scenes over and over if they kept that class boundary factual. - I don't think I have ever seen Ismay be given a kind redemption. Even in A Night To Remember he was cast by a small overweight man who's jump came off as very shameful. I haven't even seen Smith or Lord get this much hate. This one had Ismay jump into the boat while there were still people there. Kind of goes against what he said. For me, he his duty (sort of given the little fights he had with the officers) and boarded a life boat, seeing there was still room and no one left on deck. Even the UK Inquires couldn't help his imagine that was trashed by the media and US hearing. This mini drama comes off as just another thorn in the man's back. - I feel that stuff like politics were a hot topic on the titanic given what was happening on the mainland with the Home Rule and Unionist. So some nods here and there I don't really mind.

Is it me or did they rip off a scene from the Cameron film? The bit when that woman jumped back onto the ship was way too much like the scene in the blockbuster movie when Rose jumped back onto the ship to be with Jack.

It is more likely it was based on an actual event. There were several women who refused to leave their husbands, and so there may have been a woman who got in and then got out again. My beef with the Titanic movie and other depictions is there are too many fictional characters and stories when the actual events and people are far more compelling.

If they hit the ice berg head-on they might have survived. Many wounded but not 1500 dead.
