Hey, it's me, Hannah. Did you finish all of your handmade holiday gifts this year? Me neither. But I did a bang-up job nonetheless and made at least one item for each of my designated gift recipients this year. And I'm a certified good grifter, so that mixed with my most improved award in crafting, I think I did a pretty good job. I made a bunch of different gifts for a bunch of different types of folks this year, including but not limited to a bike bag for my husband, a robe for my father-in-law, and a quilted soup bowl cozy for my mother-in-law. Got a sousaphone for your brother, Drew, and snoozahorn for your brother, Stu. So let me show you everything I made all within the Advent calendar timeline. Take it away, Past Hannah, you hope-filled, innocent thing, you.
All right. I'm kicking off my Hannah-made gift guide this year with something super easy, particularly easy because I've actually already made and gifted these to my mother-in-law before. Last year I made and gifted these quilted soup bowl cozies, and this year I was asked to sew some more. Luckily for me, I still had these extra pieces from last year's project already cut out and just hanging out in my sewing room, so I get to skip the step where I search for and download a free pattern online. There's plenty of them out there if you need one, and I get to get straight into sewing. And voila! a quilted soup bowl cozy. One gift down. Plenty more to go. I am also planning on making some matching quilted oven mitts and/or quilted pot holders. We'll see if we have time, but I'll need to track down more of this fabric first since I bought it last year.
You coming up? Good girl! Well, in the meantime, let's make my sister-in-law an apron. I'm going to use the Sam Apron sewing pattern from Helen's closet, which you can download for free by signing up for their newsletter. It's a super beginner-friendly pattern, which is crucial in such a hectic time of year. My brain is mush. Let's get to sewing. Okay, that's enough for day one. I cut out all of the fabric pieces for the Sam apron, but I'm tired, so I'm going to pick back up tomorrow.
I'm pretty pleased with how that turned out. I don't want to get lipstick on it. I'm keeping this pattern. I will definitely be making one for myself in the future. That's the hardest part of DIY gifts, you work so hard on it, and then you want to keep it, then you have to give it away.
So my father-in-law is a hard enough person to shop for. So naturally trying to decide on what to make for him and finding something to make that he will like. Yeesh. Father-in-law is a big guy. So while there are a number of free patterns out there that range from extra small to extra large, I decided to go with a pattern I found on Etsy that does go all the way up to four XL.
So I finish the robe, and I just. I'm not concerned about it being too small. We'll leave it at that. I am surprisingly pleased with how this turned out. This material is really nice. I've seen a lot of people using the same fabric for like Anthropologie hand towel dupes or something to that effect. But I think it works really nice for like a nice light, like bathrobe, hot tub robe. And I think I genuinely think he's going to like it. I'm very excited. I'm excited to see what he says.
So this project has taken a couple of days, and I've kind of gone back and forth between this project and a few other projects that I've started on and messed around with. With that, I think I have at least one handmade item, two gifts to each of my respective family members on Christmas Day. All of the family that I will be with on Christmas Day except for my husband, darling husband. So what I'm planning to make for him is a bike bag. He actually sent me a video a few months ago from Swift Industries on the making of their bike frame bags and then later, a more comprehensive video with step by step instructions on how to make one from, I think, Avery Ginsberg on Instagram and Tik Tok. But that was a few months ago, and I would bet my bottom dollar that he has zero recollection of these videos. And if he does, he certainly doesn't believe that I would ...
