Speaking of game feel (I'm gonna call it feedback), there isn't much in this game so far. There's the trail, the particle effect at checkpoints, feedback from beating a level or dying, and the inherent feedback that comes from a moveset in which you move (like how wall jumping pushes you forwards). That's really not very much, and any good game kinda needs more feedback. Maybe some small particle effects for double jumping, wall jumping, and landing? Maybe some screenshake for the trampolines? How about sound effects for pretty much everything? It's very hard to have too much feedback so you might as well just add more when you have the time to

The game looks really great so far ... mostly. What I don't like is the overlapping lines, they just really make me uncomfortable, and it looks kinda messy. Other than that, the minimalistic look is **great**. I know **all** the pains in getting a coherent art style in a platformer, I spent physically weeks just on getting the background walls differing from the below-ground dirt tiles. Other than that, the game seems to be going on very well, I approve

You should add a speedrun mode where it adds a timer for the overall game and per level. This should be separate from the regular mode as not to add unneeded pressure on the players who have just started playing but would be good for advanced players.

Cool dev log. I have a critism though, the pit spikes are very distracting, they are massive and move very fast. The human eye is great at catching movement and since the movement doesnt seem consistent between the spikes (ie each spikes seems to be at a diffrent speed.) My eyes were draw to specifically those spikes over the rest of the level. Since these spikes are for death pits, I think it would be better to do a death plane, make it so you fall out of the camera at the bottom then die, In vertical levels, smart placement of the spinny bois can punish falling vertically. If thats not an option it might be better to use color to signal whats bad and whats not, having different colors mean different things makes things pretty intuitive, seems like your going for an all white aesthetic so if thats not an option either. Maybe just lower the spikes and have them not move, it might not be as visually obvious that once a player dies to them once, they will understand that spikes bad forever. Just a suggestion, great vid.

Some time back I proposed an alternative to game feel/gameplay (because there's some contestation about what the latter actually means, believe it or not): virtual kinesthetics. I think I said this in a now-lost comment thread of a blog post I can't fully remember, so it may as well have been me screaming into a flushing toilet I'd just pebbledashed the bowl of. But yeah. From 'kinesthesia', which relates to physical movement and the sensation thereof. Except it's virtual, hence the 'virtual' part.

ayo, i know this was just for visuals, but i think having an ability where for like 2 seconds you can materialize the trail closest behind you and make it a platform to just on would be cool and a really unique mechanic. although i know you’re going for a classic platformer so maybe something like that wouldn’t work. just an idea

I thought the point of the video would be making fake danger early so the player would stop for a sec to think how to approach things or consider multiple paths instead of just rushing in. It's especially helpful, like in that Super Meat Boy example, for the player to already know how to move when hazards become an actual problem. To be honest, I'd think most gamers would approach the pathmaking problem analytically, check what gets in the way and what doesn't. You know the chekhov's gun? If an object on the level doesn't have a functional purpose, it shouldn't be there. Surprized you didn't bring up Green Hill Zone again as an example of "large open space that eases the player in and lets them to test the controls". Something I want you to consider, the player would likely just hold the right (almost) the entire time, and since the traps are all priodically, it's mostly comes to when to start moving. You probably don't want the players to become master speedrunners on their first try, and don't want them to get angry becuase they were unlucky with timing, especially with that pretty long combo at the end of the level where the player can't stop once they enter it. You should probably add some sort of buffer room (related to that topic of giving the player to rest), where they can see the future hazards (probably by putting the room below the track) and free to adjust their speed without stopping completely.

Damn, I learnt so much from this video, thank you!!! I tend to focus too much on the perfect player path. Adding intimidation and rest periods will certainly help bring my next platformers to a whole new level. This is gold, can’t wait for the next vid!👌
