So there is a WoB from the June 16th spoiler stream that I think can explain Midnight Essence on Roshar without an aether. The question was "You've said before that a lot of the magics we see across the cosmere come from an interaction of Shards and their Investiture with the planets they Invest in. What does this mean practically? If Scadrial explodes tomorrow, will Hemalurgy stop working across the cosmere?" Brandons answer, "Hemalurgy wouldn't stop working, most likely, but it could. There are ways that you could make it stop working. I kind of mean that the Shards are an innate part of physics in the cosmere, and the magics that arise are an innate part of physics because of that. Like atium seeped out into the Pits of Hathsin, in the same way, these magics are just gonna leak out, and different places are going to affect them. You'll see Lightweaving happening in different places, and the way the Shard is interacting with the local... The way the Shard is is going to affect how Lightweaving is administrated in the various magics, but it's still gonna be there. Hemalurgy is kind of a similar thing to that. You will see Midnight Essence, you will see some of these recurring ideas popping up, and these are like natural parts of the physics, but they're influenced by the Shards on the local planets. I don't know if that answer, that's gonna be a really fun one for them to transcribe into the Q&A thing, because I go around in circles on that question a ton. Put this part in when you do it." My read of this is that, like lightweaving, Midnight Essence is a magical effect that can be generated by a variety of magic systems. So, it is possible that Re-Shephir isn't an aether at all just generating the same magic effect as midnight aether via another magic system.

Secret project 3 spoiler: . . . . . . . . . I think trying to tie roshar midnight essence to aethers is wrong. This talks about midnight essence as a core essence. I think it would be like looking at the storm father and thinking it's a zephyr aether prime/aether born. It's a core magic/core essence and as such it just manifests in multiple places. It's on Roshar, it's on Tress' world, it's on painters world. I think it's closer to how lightweaving is in multiple systems than Aethers being everywhere

Regarding the water discussion around 1:10:00 It is stated that what is special with the Crimson sea is how the rain is random, compared to the other seas. This would indicate a constructed water cycle. Could make sense if the entire planet is an Aether science lab. 🌊

32:00 Amberite after use turns to dust which makes an awful mess. It seems to me like he got that on his garment. That is if it works like in Aether of NIght. 36:30 The spores reproduce as parasites on Lumar 45:00 Lumar is not the home planet. Yet they got there. That suggests that the Lumaran aethers are suffering from a mental illness. 46:00 What allows you to say that the moons are not primal aethers in their entirety? How else do you explain the color and the hovering? 49:30 Twinsoul is not gestating spores. For all we know there are versions that do that and they behave differently. 52:30 Not really a choice. If you implant a bud, this is it. They are just using a mode of propagation that is not used on Lumar, because nobody would want to transplant a lethal disease to themselves. But it may still be possible to get a cut from Captain Crowe and infect somebody else. 1:00:00 If rain destroys the spores, there will be an area of equilibrium, where rain destroys enough spores so that the production rate of the moons is met. That of course raises the question where the sprouted spores go, but it seems like at least Roseite eventually vanishes completely. Though of course Lumar may be doomed and the present Lumarans are the degenerate descendants of the fools who did not want to flee. 1:08:00 If you eat and digest Verdant, its cognitive aspect will go away. It turns into - best not mentioned. You do not even need to resort to the spiritual realm. 1:13:30 Zephyr produces the smell of ozone, but not nitrous oxide. So the simple answer that it produces air, but just as single atoms as opposed to molecular form does not work. It seems like it actually creates oxygen and only oxygen. 1:15:30 What makes you think that Lumar is the only world having become a victiom of mad aethers? For all we know the Cosmere holds a dozen worlds turned into husks by having been fully buried in spores. In fact, if Lumar were the only world this is happening to, wouldn't we expect more researchers than one lonely dragon? 1:27:00 Like Superman's eye beams 1:41:00 The Thrill is essentially emotional allomancy. Aviars can do what copper allomancers do. We do know that the same effect can be created under multiple systems. 1:43:30 No. You can power allomancy from other sources, like the mists and purified Dor. No trade off necessary as opposed to usual.

to me it looks like the aethers and their moons are the asteroid from the movie Evolution, or Independence Day. They go to a world, terraform it into an aether world, and just like the falling sand game, as soon as the spores consume all of the water on the planet they leave for a new one, which they have little feeler strains out lookin for. So we get dead planets all over the place. Brandon DOES like pairs, and Adonalsium not having a pair doesn't quite fit the theme. In the beginning, there was light and dark, that type of thing. Now maybe they were spawned from the same celestial whatever - which explains why both of them have striking similarities with magics.

I wonder if the red spikes are actually just how the spores manifest, but the aether itself is whatever the spikes are made of, like stone (which is different from crystal in the ten essences) or metal, and if a sprouter was willing to face the danger and put in the effort, they could get some crimson aether to grow into something other than a spike, so a crimson aetherbound wouldn't be limited to just one specific shape 🌊

I don't think the Midnight Essence (and Mother) on Roshar _needs_ to have any connection whatsoever to the Aethers at all. We know for a fact that not every vine in the Cosmere has come from the Aethers. Not every stone was once a Roseite Aether, not every atom of gas has come from a Zephyr, not every pointy thing that happens to be red has come from the Element of Red Spikes. There doesn't seem to be any real reason why Midnight Essence can't just be an element, either (or both) naturally and supernaturally occurring. As far as we know, Honor was capable of creating a being that produces wind in the Stormfather (or at the absolute least, he was able to power up a being that has/had some little control over it), if Midnight Essence is also a basic element/force/essence/whatever in the Cosmere, why would Odium need to go find an Aether link for it? It's not like we're assuming Tanavast had to go find a human Zephyr-bound to produce the Stormfather.

For re-shaphir I wanna say that I think it seems very plausible that the disease based magic system of ashyn was a particularly virulent(like in tress) strain of aesther If else callers and lightweavers get access to aethers it’s all over for everyone im telling you Imagine jasnah or shallan is strolling onto a battle field in their literal power armor with their 1 hit ko shard gun, and pouches full of red spikes, midnight aesther, or sun aesther and then suddenly they drop the fucking sun on you by soulcasting water, or pick a billion holes in you, or suddenly have an army(also I am willing to bet the stormlight would feed the weather’s and make water uncessary Also here’s a thought, would a radiant holding stormlught be enough of a investiture field to allow an aesther to do its thing, aesther bound radiants?
@HSuper_Lee
Жыл бұрын
About an hour in there's a brief mention about the idea of investiture fields. I guess I took that in stride because it makes sense to me that some planets might have an electromagnetic field equivalent due to a natural presence and movement of Investiture. We know perpendicularities don't just form in random locations, but are like the water gathering at a low elevation. I guess I just figured that Investiture fields were just another possible planetary profile, where there is no "low elevation" where a perpendicularity can form, and instead the Investiture just keeps cycling.

My theory about how someone becomes a spore eater is that there are "special" spores that aren't killed by the silver on the ships (either because there isn't a high enough quantity of silver or they are immune to silver) and some people are just unlucky enough to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and come into contact with one.
@IAmSilverlined

A good theory! I find it more likely to be the first, rather than the latter. Silver seems to be a universal investiture killer, so it’d be strange to have a form of investiture that ignores it.
